Sindh Assembly Approves Budget 2021 Amidst Ruckus By The Opposition

Sindh Assembly has on Friday approved the provincial budget for the fiscal year 2020-21, amid protests from the opposition benches.

The house met with Speaker Agha Siraj Durrani in the chair. The opposition members were asked for speeches by the speaker, but they denied and started raising chaotic slogans in the house.

The opposition parties’ lawmakers surrounded the speaker’s stage and pasted banners with various slogans.

However, Speaker Durrani suspended all the speeches due to the behaviour of opposition parties and gave the floor to Chief Minister Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah.

After the concluding speech of the chief minister, the Sindh assembly approved the budget for the fiscal year 2021-22 during the hue and cry of the opposition.

Later, the house was adjourned till Monday, June 28.

Sindh budget 2021-22

On June 15, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah presented a budget worth more than Rs 14 trillion for the next financial year 21-2022.

During his budget speech in the House, the Chief Minister said that building our achievements is a continuation of our policies.

“We have worked out a detailed strategy for the expansion of the health sector,” he said.

Sindh CM revealed the following plans for the next financial year:

  • In particular, Rs 24.72 billion has been allocated for dealing with the pandemic.
  • 964 posts of different levels will be created in the health sector.
  • 18.32 billion has been proposed for the procurement of medicines.
    Rs 2 billion has been earmarked for the purchase of PCR and PPE kits, with a total estimate of Rs 20.822 billion.
  • Bio-Safety Lab III will be set up at Sindh Infectious Diseases Hospital Karachi.
  • Oxygen Generation / Medical Gas Plant will be installed and supplied in major hospitals of Sindh.
  • Sindh Institute of Child Health Korangi No. 5 will be established.
    Accident Emergency Centers will be set up, there are two schemes of Accident Emergency Centers, one will be built at Bola Khan Interchange Motorway and the other at Hawks Bay Karachi.
  • Sindh Human Capital Projects is a Sindh 1000 Days Plus program, consisting of stable healthcare services and universal healthcare coverage with a total cost of $400 million.
  • A state-of-the-art mother and child health care centre will be set up at a total cost of Rs 4.789 billion. The child health care centre will be set up under a JICA grant.

The budget session commenced in the Sindh Assembly. As soon as the session started, the opposition members started protesting and hung placards on the seats.

When Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah started presenting the budget for the financial year 2-2022, the opposition started hue and cry, whistles started blowing in the assembly hall and slogans were chanted.

Due to the noise of the opposition, the assembly hall began to look like a fish market and no sound could be heard.

Presenting the Sindh budget, Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah put headphones on his ears to avoid the noise and continued the budget speech despite the noise.

The Speaker of the Sindh Assembly expressed his indignation over the attitude of the opposition.

Budget 2021-22: Sindh To Allocate Rs 3bn For Public Transport In Karachi

Sindh government has decided to assign more than Rs3 billion for the obtaining of new buses in Karachi in the provincial budget 2021-22.

The provincial government has decided to launch 10 new mega projects for Karachi in the upcoming budget. Around 24 billion rupees distribution is proposed for the schemes, stated sources.

The budget plan would have water supply and street development projects for the port city.

In the provincial budget plan, allotments have been made for the plans in Lyari, Malir, Baldia Town, Keamari, and the District Central.

The spending proposition remembered 20% addition in pensions of the public authority representatives, while 20% expansion in benefits is likewise expected in the new Sindh financial plan.

The salaries are also expected to be upgraded by the compensation sizes of the workers.

Sindh government announces closure of business will now only be on Sunday

Chief Minister Sindh Murad Ali Shah has on Monday permitted to run the business activity for six days of the week except for Sunday.

Murad Ali Shah chaired a meeting of the provincial task force on coronavirus today, in which it was decided to close the business activity in Sindh for one day instead of two days a week.

The Chief Minister further said that he will not allow corruption or incompetence in any ongoing work against coronavirus.

He said, “Having a coronavirus jab should be made mandatory to get a driving license.”

In the meeting, Shah said that the rate of COVID-19 patients in Sindh has decreased to 4.5% and some pressure on hospitals has eased now.

Moreover, CM Sindh also shared more facts and figures, saying that so far 50 of the passengers from abroad have recovered. A total of 9.5% of the new cases were diagnosed in Karachi, 5.65% in Hyderabad, 12% in District East of Karachi and 9% in District South.

So far, 192 patients have died in June for COVID-19.

On the other hand, the Sindh government has decided to allow on-campus academic activities of classes six to eight with a 50% attendance at a time from Tuesday, June 15.

Taking to Twitter, Saeed Ghani said that the classes of sixth to eighth grade would resume from Tuesday, and in case of further improvement in the COVID situation, the primary classes will begin from June 21.

“Sindh Corona Task Force has decided to reopen educational institutions of Sindh for class 9th and above from 7th June(tomorrow) with strict SOPs. All staff must be get vaccinated,” Ghani tweeted.

He, however, said that the complete staff of the school had to get themselves vaccinated before the resumption of classes.

According to the details, Murad Ali Shah said that the number of coronavirus cases in Sindh has reached 328,167.

He said that 7 more deaths have been reported from Covid-19 in Sindh and the number of deaths from Coronavirus has reached 5,243 in Sindh.

He further stated that the condition of 644 patients of coronavirus is critical while 57 patients are on ventilators in Sindh.

Murad Ali Shah said that 355 cases of covid-19 were reported in Karachi and the number of cases has increased to 220,255.

Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed, who is on an official visit to Karachi, held a meeting with Chief Minister Sindh Murad Ali Shah here on Thursday.

During the meeting, Sheikh Rashid has assured the Chief Minister of full cooperation over the ongoing operation against dacoits in Shikarpur.

Both the leaders also discussed the overall law and order situation of the province.

On this occasion, CM Sindh Murad Ali Shah said that the dacoits will be completely eradicated. Some important equipment is needed. “The Federal Ministry of Home Affairs should help us in procuring the equipment,” he remarked.

Earlier, Sheikh Rashid Ahmed on Wednesday said that the federal government will ensure the provision of all resources to the law enforcement agencies (LEAs) to maintain the law and order.

The Minister made these remarks during a briefing given to him on the law and order situation at the Sindh Rangers Headquarters in Karachi.

On the occasion, the interior minister said that the federal government will take all necessary measures to protect the lives and properties of the masses.

Lauding the role of Sindh Rangers in restoring peace in Karachi,  Rashid termed the metropolis backbone of the country’s economy.

Upon his arrival at the Sindh Rangers Headquarters, DG Rangers Major General Iftikhar Hassan Chaudhary welcomed the interior minister.

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah presides over a meeting of the Coronavirus Taskforce at CM House here on Thursday (today).

The Coronavirus Task Force meeting has decided to ban takeaways from restaurants and allow only home deliveries from Friday, May 7 to Sunday, May 9.

The meeting was held to review the prevailing COVID-19 situation and decided to further tighten restrictions to curb the spread of the deadly virus.

The decisions taken during the meeting are as follows:

  1. No takeaways will be allowed after the sunset from Friday to Sunday.
  2. Only home deliveries will be allowed.
  3. Grocery shops to shut at 6 pm.
  4. Karachi’s beaches including Hawksbay and Seaview will remain closed during the Eid holidays.
  5. Pharmacies have been exempted from business timing restrictions.
  6. Vaccination centres will operate round the clock.

The meeting decided to force more limitations from Sunday till the Eid holidays are over.

Earlier, Murad Ali Shah had directed the concerned authorities to follow the precautionary measures to control the third wave of the infection.

It was informed in the meeting that Sindh has a recovery rate of 93% and a mortality rate of 1.6% due to the novel coronavirus.

On the occasion, CM Sindh had reiterated that the government will not tolerate violations of standard operating procedures (SOPs).

Moreover, the Sindh Chief Minister had directed the ministers to visit the cities and review the precautionary measures.

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has on Tuesday filed a corruption reference against Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah over alleged misuse of power in province’s energy-related projects.

The anti-corruption watchdog filed a corruption reference against Sindh CM Murad Ali Shah in an accountability court of Islamabad.

He is facing charges of misusing the power in the disbursement of funds for energy-related projects in Sindh, according to the reference filed by NAB.

The NAB reference says that unregulated funds released for energy projects in Sindh. Billions were misappropriated in the Nooriabad Power Company and Sindh Transmission & Dispatch Company projects.

However, in the reference, 17 persons, including Sindh Chief Minister and Abdul Ghani Majeed have been indicted.

In October last year, it emerged that Murad Ali Shah and over 12 provincial cabinet members are on the radar of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) under corruption charges in separate cases.
