Is ‘Like Jennie’ by BLACKPINK’s Jennie copied from ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’?

K-pop sensation Jennie, known for being a member of BLACKPINK, recently announced her new song, Like Jennie, which is set to release this Friday. On Tuesday, a 9-second teaser was shared on social media, receiving praise from fans. However, desi listeners quickly pointed out its striking similarity to Rani’s Theme from Karan Johar’s 2023 film Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani.

Jennie’s teaser features thumping beats and vocals chanting her name, which many listeners felt closely resembled the theme composed by Pritam. A user on X (formerly Twitter) shared Rani’s Theme in response to Like Jennie and wrote, “The copy-paste (crying emoji) she’s shameless.” Another added, “This is the same song, even the vocals are similar.”

Some fans expressed disbelief, given that Pritam himself has faced plagiarism accusations in the past. “I cannot believe Jennie is plagiarising Pritam, out of all. Bollywood out of all,” one tweet read. Another user wrote, “#BLACKPINK’s Jennie copied the song Rani Anthem from the movie Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani… in a way that sounds no different.”

However, some defended Jennie, suggesting Pritam might have sampled an older Korean song. “Pritam literally copied Pehli Nazar Me note for note from a Korean song. He probably did the same for this intro,” argued one user.

Jennie Kim debuted in 2016 as a BLACKPINK member and went solo in 2018 with Solo. She made her acting debut in 2023 under the name Jennie Ruby Jane in The Idol.

Karan Johar is one of the most influential Indian filmmakers today. From Kuch Kuch Hota Hai to his most recent movie, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, his films have had an impact on popular culture. Concerning his latest release, there were rumours of a cameo appearance by Shah Rukh Khan. Karan Johar revealed in an interview why he did not seek the King Of Bollywood to star in his last film, despite the fact that he might have.

As everyone knows, every Karan film has had a Shah Rukh Khan association (SRK was a co-producer on Student Of The Year). Karan was asked whether he considered Shah Rukh Khan for a cameo in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani to maintain his association with the King.

“The entire AD (assistant directors) team; some of them will say that in Tum Kya Mile, the best moment should be when you track away from Alia Ranveer and just go to Shah Rukh and Kajol and they sing the same song,” the master director said.

He went on to add, “And when they stare at them, Alia realizes that this is true love since they signify love. And I was thinking, what amount of guts do I have to ask Shah Rukh not just to make a cameo but to travel to Kashmir, get into the hair and costume; also, Shah Rukh never says no to me, so I have to pick and select what I have to ask for.”

Karan then remembered Shah Rukh Khan’s various favors during his career, as well as why he felt it was wrong to contact the star again. “I remember going as a team to ask him to play the massive, impactful cameo in Brahmastra, and at the end of the day, he just looked at us and said, ‘It’s Karan,'” he added. I’m never able to say no.'”

He further added, “I know I can’t take that sense of empowerment for granted. I can’t keep returning. I recall thinking for Ae Dil Hai Mushkil that no one else could utter, ‘Ek tarfa pyaar ki taakat hi kuch aur hai..’ (There is no such thing as one-sided love’s power). ‘Aur kaun bolega,’ I said. ‘Aur bol sakta hai!’ (Who else will say it? Who else could possibly say it?). ‘Isme sirf mera haq hai, sirf mera’ (I am the only owner. Only me) and you know, you need a king to perform this dialogue, who by the way is now an emperor. I told him, ‘Now we simply need to call you Emperor Khan.’ That’s the new name.”

Karan Johar Reveals His Approach To Silencing Negativity In His Life

Filmmaker Karan Johar, riding high on the success of “Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani,” shared insights into how he copes with negativity in his life. He revealed that he has overcome the fear of judgment and can now handle trolling and negativity without letting it impact his life significantly. Drawing a parallel with a character from his film, Tota Roy Chowdhury’s Chandon Chatterjee, Karan stated that, like Chandon, he was also perceived as different during his childhood.

During an interview, Karan Johar expressed, “Vicariously, we live our lives through cinema. Even in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, Tota Roy Chowdhury’s character (Chandon Chatterjee), Alia’s father in the film, and what he spoke about being laughed at as a child when he wanted to dance. It was pretty much a section of my childhood where I was considered different from the other boys. Unusual. People would use all kinds of words at that time that were hurtful.” Tota Roy Chowdhury portrays a kathak dancer in the movie.

Reflecting on his past, Karan realized that negative comments were attempts to weaken him. “Very easily, you can get weakened by what people say about you. But I felt like ‘Thank God I have cinema where I can express myself,’” he noted. Karan emphasized that he no longer pays heed to others’ judgments, choosing instead to live life on his own terms. He embraced the idea that “hunar ka koi gender nahi hota” (there is no gender for talent), as expressed by Tota Roy Chowdhury’s character in the film. Karan no longer fears judgment and is determined to live life authentically, despite external pressures.

Karan Johar recently attended the premiere of the action film “Kill” at the Toronto International Film Festival. Produced by Karan Johar and Guneet Monga, the film is directed by Nikhil Nagesh Bhat and stars Lakshay and Raghav Juyal.

Karan Johar Counters Nepotism Claims By Backing Lakshya In Kill

Karan Johar is currently enjoying the tremendous success of his recent directorial project, “Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani,” which received favorable critical acclaim and performed well at the box office. Following this achievement, Karan surprised everyone with an unexpected move into the action-thriller genre with his new film, “Kill,” produced under Dharma Productions, starring Raghav Juyal and Lakshya in leading roles.

In an interview, Karan was questioned about whether launching Lakshya in “Kill” was a deliberate response to those who label him as part of the ‘nepo mafia.’ He affirmed that it was indeed a reminder and quite evident. Karan expressed, “You criticize us for everything. You curse us. You speak about the fact that we support and encourage nepotism, nepo babies, all the flak that comes to us.” He continued, “I wanna say if you give us the flak, then today give us the credit. Lakshya is a rank outsider. This is a very expensive film mounted entirely on him. We have produced it, we have funded it, Dharma Productions has funded. The money, the risk is all ours.”

Karan Johar emphasized that Lakshya underwent auditions to secure the role and worked diligently for it.

During his conversation with Sneha Menon Desai, Karan Johar addressed the question of why people seem to have a love-hate relationship with him. He acknowledged that it’s acceptable to harbor negative feelings toward him.

“I’m also like pouting at age 50 into a camera, I sometimes wear shiny clothes and walk the red carpet, I’m coming across catty on a chat show, I’m laughing like a hyena sometimes; can be annoying. I’m everywhere. You put on the TV I’m endorsing a product, I’m judging a reality show, I’m hosting a talk show. I can be annoying to people who don’t know me as a human being. So, it’s kind of cool to hate this person because you don’t know them and you find that what the hell is going on with this person’s life and I can understand why I get the hate,” he said. However, he urged his critics to give him the benefit of the doubt.

“Kill” is written and directed by Nikhil Nagesh Bhat and features Lakshya, Raghav Juyal, and Tanya Maniktala. The film made its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in the Midnight Mass section, where it received positive reviews.
