Two more polio cases surface in Pakistan

KARACHI: Two more polio cases have surfaced in Pakistan, rising the total number of polio cases  to five this year so far.

Polio cases have been confirmed in Qambar Shahdadkot District of Sindh and Mandi Bahauddin area of Punjab.

The third polio case of this year has surfaced in Sindh and the first polio case of Punjab has surfaced, after which the total number of polio cases has increased to 5.

The disease has crippled hundreds of children worldwide, but now it existed only in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

It is to be remembered that last year, 74 polio cases were reported in the country, of which 27 were reported from Balochistan, 22 from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and 23 from Sindh.

One each case was reported in Punjab and Islamabad last year.

ISLAMABAD: The total number of polio cases in Pakistan has reached 63 this year as 4 more polio cases reported in the country.

The National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC)has confirmed 4 more polio cases in Pakistan. The  polio cases have been reported from Dera Ismail Khan, Tank, Jacobabad and Sukkur.

According to the EOC, this is the 9th case of polio from Dera Ismail Khan, the third from Jacobabad and the first from Sukkur.

This year 26 polio cases have been reported from Balochistan, 18 from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 17 from Sindh, 1 from Punjab and Islamabad. The total number of polio cases across the country has reached 63.

On the other hand, Chief Secretary Sindh, Asif Hyder Shah, chaired a high-level meeting to finalize preparations for the upcoming seven-day anti-polio campaign set to begin on December 16.

During the campaign, over 10.6 million children across Sindh will be administered polio drops. Chief Secretary Sindh emphasized the critical importance of eradicating polio and ensuring every child receives the vaccine.

He announced that more than 80,000 frontline workers will participate in this extensive drive, and polio teams will also be deployed at all major bus terminals across the province to ensure coverage of children in transit.

Chief Secretary Asif Hyder Shah directed all deputy commissioners to make every effort to convince parents who refuse vaccination, urging them to cooperate for the safety and future of their children.

He also appealed to parents to support the polio teams in their mission to safeguard children from this debilitating disease.

The Chief Secretary stressed that no negligence in the training of polio workers would be tolerated.

He instructed the district administration and union council (UC) secretaries from the Local Government Department to remain active in the field throughout the campaign.

ISLAMABAD: The National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) has reported two more poliovirus cases in Pakistan, bringing the total number of cases this year to 52.

The National Reference Lab confirmed the cases, which were detected in Dera Ismail Khan’s Tehsil Darazinda, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The new cases include a three-year-old boy and a one-and-a-half-year-old girl, both of whom tested positive for Wild Poliovirus Type 1.

Sources revealed that the genetic analysis of the virus is currently underway.

So far this year,  24 polio cases were registered in Balochistan, 13 in Sindh,13 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and one each in Punjab and Islamabad.

ISLAMABAD: The Regional Reference Laboratory for Polio Eradication at the National Institute of Health has confirmed the detection of two more wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) cases in Pakistan, bringing the number of total cases in the country this year to 45.

The lab confirmed the cases from Lakki Marwat, where a girl child is affected, and from Dera Ismail Khan, where a male child is affected.

Genetic sequencing of the samples collected from the children is underway.

These are the second polio cases reported from Dera Ismail Khan and Lakki Marwat this year, where environmental samples have tested positive in recent months.

So far, 22 polio cases have been reported from Balochistan,12 from Sindh, nine from KP and one each from Punjab and Islamabad.
