Germany: Police deny staging a protest detention of Greta Thunberg

Greta
  • A viral post falsely claimed the climate activist was being held by police.
  • Millions of people have watched the video of her being removed by police.
  • The viral video shows the climate activist flanked on both sides by police officers.

German police have denied acting as “extras for Greta Thunberg” following false claims that her arrest at a protest in western Germany was staged.

A viral post falsely claimed the climate activist being held by police was “all set up for the cameras”.

Ms. Thunberg and other activists were attempting to prevent the demolition of the abandoned village of Lützerath in order to expand a coal mine.

Millions of people have watched the video of her being removed by police.

“We would never give ourselves up to make such recordings,” a local police spokesperson said.

However, it is critical that the police facilitate reporting and protect media workers, they added.

The viral video shows the climate activist flanked on both sides by police officers.

Meanwhile, as Ms. Thunberg smiles, a few photographers can be seen taking photos and moving around her.

Several other cops standing nearby appear to be waiting with her before walking her away from the scene.

Some people on the internet have jumped on these moments of officers and Ms. Thunberg waiting to falsely claim that they are part of a staged photo opportunity.

The interior ministry of the western state of North Rhine-Westphalia, on the other hand, stated that the police officers and Ms. Thunberg were being held for logistical reasons.

“They had to wait a couple of minutes before they could bring her to a specific police car,” the spokesperson explained.

Ms. Thunberg Tweeted

According to police, the activists were detained after they “rushed towards the ledge” of the Garzweiler 2 mine on Tuesday.

Officers also stated that none of those detained would face charges.

Ms. Thunberg has frequently been the target of online conspiracy theories and false claims, often from those who deny the existence of man-made climate change.

Germany: Greta Thunberg had not been arrested

Greta
  • Greta Thunberg was temporarily held by police at a rally.
  • She had been released after an ID check.
  • Police clarified that Ms. Thunberg had not been arrested.

Greta Thunberg, a climate activist, was temporarily held by police at a rally in western Germany.

She was demonstrating with campaigners to prevent the demolition of the abandoned community of Lützerath for the construction of a coal mine.

Police clarified that Ms. Thunberg had not been arrested, and later said she had been released after an ID check.

According to police, the Swedish activist was apprehended as a group “rushed towards the ledge” of the Garzweiler 2 mine.

Activists claim that coal combustion hampers Germany’s efforts to minimize greenhouse gas emissions.

The administration has promised to move the phase-out of coal in North Rhine-Westphalia, the state where the mine is located, to 2030. The national goal is 2038.

The dirtiest type of coal is lignite, and the area around Lützerath produces 25 million tonnes of it each year.

The government claims that expanding the mine is necessary to meet German energy demand while dealing with the disruption of Russian gas.

Protest organizers estimated that 35,000 people showed up on Saturday, while police estimated that the number was closer to 15,000 people.

Over the weekend, police reported they were able to remove all activists from the town.

1890s pic disclosure, some say Greta Thunberg is a time traveller

Greta Thunberg

After spotting a familiar face in an 1890s photo, conspiracy theorists believe climate activist Greta Thunberg is a time traveller.

Some conspiracy theorists think Thunberg, 19, was sent into the future to stop climate change and was recognised in an 1898 image.

Online conspiracy theorists claim they spotted the climate activist front and centre in a photograph of three children at a Canadian gold mine in the Yukon region, according to the report.

Those conspiracy theorists’ assertions, as insane as they are, are based on an image of a boy who resembles the Swedish climate campaigner.

The Canadian mining photograph, which shows a man staring down the camera with a gaze that is recognisable to those familiar with Thunberg’s art, has struck a chord with conspiracy theorists.

Dean Friedman, a musician, made a joke about the image, tweeting: “A 120-year-old photograph has sparked speculation that Greta Thunberg, a climate activist and environmental hero, is a ‘time-traveller’ who has travelled across time to save our planet!

“Wishing her all the best and success in her mission to save the earth. We can use the help we can get!”

Some believe Thunberg went back in time and has since returned to the present day, much like Marty McFly from Back to the Future.

Despite travelling back in time, Eric Hegg, who was born in the same nation as the 19-year-old climate activist, took the shot of “Thunberg” in the past.

The couple was born 136 years apart, making it improbable that Thunberg and Hegg met, unless, as conspiracy theories suggest, she travelled back in time.

Author Jack Stranger commented on another witty post, saying: “To those saying ‘How can she be in the past if she’s from the future?’

Kangana slams Rihanna, Greta & Mia for supporting farmers protest

farmers protest

On Tuesday Rihanna had shocked Indians by tweeting about the ongoing months-long farmer protests against Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s agricultural reforms. For more than two months, thousands of farmers have blocked all the roads leading into New Delhi.

Last week, the farmers held a tractor rally that turned violent in New Delhi. In response, police have shut down the internet, dug ditches, put driving nails into roads, and topping barricades with razor wire to stop farmers from entering the capital city.

Taking to Twitter, Bad Girl RiRi raised the issue by sharing an article on the farmer’s protest. She wrote,

“Why aren’t we talking about this?!”

Climate activist Greta Thunberg, who also expressed solidarity with the farmers and shared the same article on the micro-blogging site Twitter.

Moreover, US Vice President Kamala Harris’ niece Meena Harris also showed her support to the protest, writing

“We ALL should be outraged by India’s internet shutdowns and paramilitary violence against farmer protesters.”

Similarly, Mia Khalifa also talked about the farmers’ protest and wrote,

“Paid actors,” huh? Quite the casting director, I hope they’re not overlooked during awards season. I stand with the farmers”

The Indian foreign ministry said in an official statement that the celebrities needed “a proper understanding of the issues”.

“The temptation of sensationalist social media hashtags and comments, especially when resorted to by celebrities and others, is neither accurate nor responsible,” read the statement, with the hashtags #IndiaTogether and #IndiaAgainstPropaganda.

“We would like to emphasize that these protests must be seen in the context of India’s democratic ethos and polity, and the efforts of the Government and the concerned farmer groups to resolve the impasse,” it added.

Meanwhile, Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut, who is a Modi supporter, backfire at Rihana and called the protesting farmers “terrorists” and the singer a “fool”. She also called Greta a “dumb and spoilt brat.”

It should be noted that in India, the government of Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had introduced agrarian reforms against which thousands of farmers had started marching towards the capital of New Delhi.
