SC’s larger bench formed to hear journalist Arshad Sharif case

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court (SC) of Pakistan constituted a five-member larger bench to hear a suo motu case pertaining to journalist Arshad Sharif’s murder.

A 5-member larger bench headed by Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhail has been constituted to hear the suo motu case.

Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar, Justice Ayesha Malik, Justice Hassan Azhar Rizvi, Justice Athar Minallah are included in the bench.

The decision to form a 5-member bench headed by Justice Jamal Khan Mandukhel was taken in the ratio of two to one.

Sources said Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa gave the opinion to maintain the 3-member bench of Justice Mansoor Ali Shah, while Justice Mansoor Ali Shah, Justice Muneeb Akhtar gave the opinion to form a 5-member bench headed by Jamal Khan Mandokhail.

SC fixes anchor Arshad Sharif’s murder case for hearing on tomorrow

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan has fixed the murder case of eminent journalist and Bol News anchor Arshad Sharif for the hearing in suo motu notice.

A five-member bench headed by the Chief Justice will hear the murder of journalist Arshad Sharif tomorrow on a suo motu notice.

The hearing on the Arshad Sharif case will be held tomorrow at eleven o’clock in courtroom number one.

It should be noted that the Supreme Court has sought a report on the investigation in the UAE and Kenya from the special Joint Investigation Team(JIT) set up to investigate the Arshad Sharif murder case.

A few weeks ago, the JIT established in the murder case of a Pakistani journalist and senior Bol News anchor Arshad Sharif, returned to Pakistan after completing its investigation.
It should be noted that the five-member special JIT was headed by DIG Headquarters Awais Ahmed, while other officers included Deputy DG Sajid Kayani from IB and Muhammad Aslam from ISI.

Apart from this, Director Cybercrime FIA Waqaruddin Syed and Muhammad Afzal from MI are included while the five-member team, investigating inspector of the case Muhammad Shahbaz was also with the team in Dubai and Kenya.

NA panel to take up bill on protection of journalists in next meeting

ISLAMABAD: National Assembly Standing Committee on Information and Broadcasting Thursday decided to take up bill regarding the protection of journalists in its next meeting.

The National Assembly panel on Information and Broadcasting meeting chaired by  Javaria Zafar Aheer also called  for a detailed briefing regarding killing of journalist Arshad Sharif in Kenya. Javaria Zafar said that no briefing had been given to the committee regarding Arshad Sharif’s murder.

The committee also condemned violence against journalists in Islamabad High Court. Javaria Zafar said that journalists were prevented from performing their professional duties by the police.

Minister for Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb informed  the committee that a meeting was held with the Ministry of Interior on the issue of violence against journalists in the Islamabad High Court.

She said that journalists  were prevented from going to Islamabad High Court to perform their duties.

Marriyum said that Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah has called for a report on the incident of violence against journalists.

Naz Baloch, MNA said legislation should be done so that journalists do not feel unsafe. She also said that the committee should also discuss the campaign against women journalists.

Members of the committee expressed their concern over content against social values in dramas and TV commercials.

Secretary Information and Broadcasting Shahera Shahid told the panel that every province had a Council of Complaints which were authorized to hear complaints.

She informed that there was no censor board for television dramas, censor board could censor only films.

Chairperson of the committee, Javaria Zafar Aheer said that the content of dramas should be watched before  their telecast.

Minister for Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb said legislation would be done for censoring dramas telecast by television channels.

Chairman Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority Salim Baig said that PEMRA had banned a private channel’s  drama “Jalan”  but they got stay order from a high court.

He said that the PEMRA had filed an appeal in the Supreme Court which had  reserved its verdict on the matter and it would be announced soon.

ISLAMABAD: The Special Joint Investigation Team (JIT) formed to probe the murder of senior journalist Arshad Sharif has returned to Pakistan after completing its inquiry in Kenya and UAE.

Bol News Anchorperson Arsahd Sharif was killed in the Kenyan capital Nairobi on October 23 where he was living in self-exile.

The federal government formed a new special joint investigation team (JIT) formed to probe the murder of senior journalist Arshad Sharif with the apex court on December 08, 2022.

The new JIT includes members from ISI, IB, FIA and the Islamabad police. The members include DIG Intelligence Branch, Sajid Kiyani, FIA’s Waqarauddin Syed, DIG Headquarters, Owais Ahmed, Murtaza Afzal from the Military Intelligence and Muhammad Aslam from the ISI.

The five-member JIT members were in Kenya and UAE to probe the murder of a senior journalist Arshad Sharif in Kenya. The members collected the details about the contacts made by the senior journalist during his last days.

The committee is expected to submit its report to the Supreme Court next week.

LAHORE: A letter has been written to President Dr. Arif Alvi and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to investigate the murder case of senior journalist and well-known anchorperson Arshad Sharif through the judicial tribunal.

A letter has been sent to the President and the Prime Minister by Azhar Siddique, the head of the Judicial Activism Panel, to investigate the Arshad Sharif murder case via judicial tribunal.

The text of the letter to be sent to the President and Prime Minister states that the Kenyan government is directly involved in Arshad Sharif’s murder and is not cooperating at all with the investigation.

The letter has clarified that the delay in the investigation will not allow access to the killers, but in view of the sensitivity of the matter, the International Court of Justice should be approached and a judicial inquiry tribunal headed by a Supreme Court judge should be formed for the investigation.

It has been said in the letter that an attempt has been made to suppress the freedom of expression by the killing of senior journalist Arshad Sharif and the entire nation is still saddened by his killing and wants to see the killers on the scene, based on which it has been demanded that an investigation be carried out. For this, help should be taken from national and international journalistic organizations.
