Ulster University to name investigative journalism award after Arshad Sharif

Ulster University in Northern Ireland has decided to introduce an award named after senior journalist Arshad Sharif.

The university’s administration has penned down a letter to Sharif’s wife Somiya Arshad seeking permission to introduce Best Investigative Journalist award named after the slain journalist.

Dr Colm Murphy, Subject Leader in Media, Film, and Journalism at Ulster University’s School of Communication and Media, informed about the award under Arshad Sharif’s name.

The letter said the university will honour Arshad Sharif’s memory by giving an award named after him each year to one of its students for the best articles produced in investigative journalism.

“We are so proud of what he had achieved in journalism in Pakistan, his bravery, honesty and insightfulness on behalf of the people and public interest,” the letter said.

The university also condolences on the tragic death of the senior journalist, noting that Sharif was a former student of the school graduating over 17 years ago with his MA in Media Studies.

The university administration has also added Arshad Sharif’s name to its Tree of Hope in the university oratory in Coleraine as the institute “remembers him and your family at this time of the year”.

The university sought permission to introduce the award in his memory for the best article produced in investigative journalism so that “his fight for truth will become a legacy to encourage a new generation of journalists”

Arshad Sharif graduated in MA Media Studies from Ulster University’s School of Communication and Media 17 years ago, revealed Dr Colm, adding that Ulster University is proud his achievement in journalism in Pakistan.
