Jacinda Ardern received a message from Prince William and Kate Middleton thanking her for her friendship and support during her final days as New Zealand’s prime minister.

Using their Twitter account, the royal couple said in a statement, “Thank you Jacinda Ardern for your friendship, leadership and support over the years, not least at the time of my grandmother’s death. Sending you, Clarke and Neve our best wishes. W & C.”

On her last day as prime minister, Jacinda Ardern gave an emotional farewell speech on Tuesday. She thanked the people of New Zealand for their generosity and compassion while also expressing her readiness to become a mother and a sister.

Days after shocking the entire world by stating she had “no more in the tank” to lead the nation and would resign, the 42-year-old arrived to a gathering of lawmakers and Maori elders in the small hamlet of Ratana, north of Wellington, and was immediately besieged by fans looking for pictures.

In a speech to the group, Ardern said, “Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the greatest privilege of my life.

On Wednesday, Chris Hipkins, the next head of the Labour party, will take her post.
