Former US President Jimmy Carter to receive hospice care

United States
  • Former US President Jimmy Carter will receive hospice care.
  • He will spend his remaining time at home with his family.
  • Mr. Carter, 98, is the country’s oldest living former leader.

Former United States President Jimmy Carter will receive hospice care and “spend his remaining time at home with his family” instead of additional medical intervention, the Carter Center says.

Mr. Carter, 98, is the country’s oldest living former leader.

From 1977 until 1981, he was a Democrat. Ronald Reagan defeated him in his reelection bid.

He has had significant health concerns, including a melanoma that spread to his liver and brain.

“He has the full support of his family and his medical team. The Carter family asks for privacy during this time and is grateful for the concern shown by his many admirers,” the Carter Center said in a statement on Saturday.

Mr. Carter’s grandson, Jason Carter, former Georgia state representative, tweeted that he had seen “both of my grandparents yesterday.”

“They are at peace and – as always – their home is full of love. Thank you all for your kind words,” he said.

Mr. Carter and his wife Roslyn will be celebrating their 75th wedding anniversary in 2021. They have four children together.

Mr. Carter, who was born in Georgia in 1924, entered politics in the 1960s as a state legislator before becoming governor of Georgia in 1971.

Five years later, he defeated incumbent Republican President Gerald Ford to become the 39th President of the United States.

But, challenges arose early for Mr. Carter as president.

Domestically, an oil crisis caused high inflation and unemployment, and he struggled to persuade Americans to embrace the necessary austerity measures.

The signing of the Camp David Accords in 1978, in which Egypt legally recognized the establishment of Israel, was a high point of the Carter administration. He also signed a pact that returned control of the Panama Canal to Panama.

However, the last Shah of Iran was deposed in 1979, and 66 Americans were kidnapped in Tehran as a result. In reaction, Mr Carter severed diplomatic relations with Iran and imposed a trade boycott.

Unfortunately, the public did not believe he was tough enough, and his popularity plummeted during the 444-day detention of US hostages. His popularity dropped even worse after an attempt to rescue the hostages failed and eight US military personnel were killed.

Iran then postponed the captive release until after Ronald Reagan was sworn in.

Mr. Carter has stayed active since leaving the White House, carrying out humanitarian activities through his Carter Center.

In 1994, he led a mission to urge military leaders in Haiti to hand up power, and he arranged a ceasefire in Bosnia that helped prepare the ground for a future peace accord.

He went on to earn the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his efforts to promote human rights on a global scale.

He co-founded The Elders with Nelson Mandela, a collection of world leaders dedicated to promoting peace and human rights.

He also traveled widely, far into his early 90s, and participated in annual Habitat for Humanity charity-building missions.

But, the former president has also struggled with a number of health concerns in recent years. Mr. Carter had a tiny malignant tumor removed from his liver in August 2015.

The following year, he announced that he did not require any further therapy because an investigational medicine had removed all evidence of cancer.

Nonetheless, despite coping with his health issues, he has shown remarkable serenity.

“I’m perfectly at ease with whatever comes,” he said in 2015. “I’ve had an exciting, adventurous, and gratifying existence.”

Mr. Carter celebrated his most recent birthday in Plains, Georgia, where he and his wife were born during World War I and the Great Depression and where they returned when he left office.

A host of senior US politicians – including Democratic Senate leader Chuck Schumer, New York Governor Kathy Hochul, and Georgia Senator Raphael Warnock – offered their thoughts and prayers to Mr. Carter’s family as news broke on Saturday night.

“In this tender time of transitioning, God is surely walking with him,” Senator Warnock tweeted. “May he, Rosalynn & the entire Carter family be comforted with that peace and surrounded by our love & prayers.”

Andrew Tate has threatened to sue his accuser

Andrew Tate
  • Andrew Tate has threatened legal action against at least one of the women who have accused him of rape and human trafficking.
  • The letter threatened the woman and her parents with a $300 million lawsuit.
  • The Tates’ lawyer stated that they were pursuing viable slander allegations.

Andrew Tate, a controversial influencer, has threatened legal action against at least one of the women who have accused him of rape and human trafficking.

According to the woman’s lawyers in the United States, a “cease-and-desist” letter was sent in December by a US law firm on behalf of Andrew Tate and his brother Tristan.

The letter threatened the woman and her parents with a $300 million (£249 million) lawsuit if she did not retract her claims.

The Tates’ lawyer stated that they were pursuing viable slander allegations.

The sources have seen a redacted copy of the letter, which was presumably sent on the brothers’ behalf.

“In April 2022,” it reads, “you falsely stated to a third party that our Client human trafficked you, abused you and held you against your will […] You have repeated false and defamatory statements to the police, the media, and another United States citizen about the Tate brothers.”

Andrew and Tristan Tate are currently being held in Romania in preventative detention as police investigate claims of human trafficking and rape, which both men deny.

Benjamin Bull – who works for the National Centre on Sexual Exploitation – says his client is a key witness in the Romanian investigation, and that the letter was designed to do “one thing and one thing only”:

“[It] was intended to shut down the witness; stop the witness from bringing testimony forward in any proceedings,” he said.

“They want these young ladies to climb into a hole and hide, never come forward [or] describe what they saw and what happened to them. It’s clearly an effort to intimidate.”

Attorneys for the Tates confirmed to the BBC that the cease-and-desist letter was delivered in December, as part of a civil case in the United States for defamation and slander, but denied any intimidation.

Tina Glandian, one of their legal advisors, said there was nothing abnormal in them pursuing valid legal claims for defamation. “The fact that [the Tates] are incarcerated right now is not a basis for them not to pursue their legal rights,” she said.

The inquiry into rape and human trafficking claims is thought to be based in part on the testimony of six women. No charges have yet been filed.

According to the Tates’ legal team, the brothers filed criminal accusations in Romania last April against two women, including the witness.

Ms Glandian stated that the criminal complaints were filed in April in response to suspicions that the Tate brothers were holding two women against their will.

“There was no evidence whatsoever of that,” she said, “which is why [the Tates] was not arrested in April. [At that time], they were nothing but victims of false allegations, and they had every right to file criminal complaints for having their homes raided [and] property seized.”

According to her, the outcomes of those criminal complaints are still pending.

Tina Glandian pictured speaking in front of a number of microphones. She is sitting with a wall behind her.

Benjamin Bull, who represents some of the witnesses in the ongoing Tate inquiry, said the legal action has been upsetting and threatening for his clients.

Nevertheless, Dani Pinter, a member of the same legal team, claims that it is not simply the possibility of legal action that is scary, but also the online harassment that many of her clients face as a result of speaking out.

“Regular, high production value videos, meant to embarrass and harass them, are shared among Tate’s followers,” she told me.

“Making really salacious claims, attempting to slut shame them, saying they’re liars. But included in that is their private information – where they work, who their family members are – with the clear intention to incite harassment. And it’s working.”

She claims that the two alleged victims she represents have received death threats.

“They’re scared to death. They’re both in hiding. They feel they can’t settle anywhere, because people are trying to find them.”

Prosecutors have taken great efforts to keep the identities of the six women in their case private. Nonetheless, some people’s full names have been released on social media.

The identities of two witnesses were even mentioned in a source’s statement from the Tates’ US relations staff. They are not being named publicly by the sources.

While in detention, Andrew Tate and his brother do not have access to their social media accounts, but they have amassed a large and devoted online following.

Several accounts appear to be fully-staffed operations, distributing videos and papers on a daily basis in order to undercut the testimonies of witnesses and other women bringing charges against the Tates.

One of the more active accounts tweeted the entire identity, social media handles, and WhatsApp chats of one of the accused victims in the probe earlier this week.

The sources has reached out to the account for comment but has yet to receive a response.

Even those who barely scratch the surface of this subject may become a target.

Daria Gusa told sources and others that when she was 16, she received a private message from Andrew Tate’s Instagram account. It followed the same structure as his online presentations on how to get a woman’s attention and influence her.

She did not accuse him of any wrongdoing.

“I got a bunch of messages,” she told me. “Most were from people saying I was lying or calling me a slut.”

But she also received “10 to 15 threats” online.

“I had a guy texting me, telling me ‘I know you’re studying at this university, the schedule is published online, I know where you are'” Daria said.

Several of her friends, who also appear to have had contact with him, have refused to speak out about their experiences, she says.

“It’s not just the people who work for him,” she explained. “It’s that there are basically millions of men out there who really idolise these people, and would do anything to protect them and their image, so I think it’s completely justifiable that so many girls don’t want to speak out.”

It is not clear exactly who runs some of the most active accounts defending the Tates, or how much cooperation exists between them.

But the risks for women making public allegations against Andrew Tate can be high, and they can come from many directions.

Tyre Nichols: Ex-officers plead not guilty in connection with his death

Tyre Nichols:
  • Five former Memphis police officers charged with murder have pleaded not guilty.
  • The Memphis Police Department fired them following an internal inquiry.
  • Mr. Nichols’ death spurred protests in the United States against police brutality.

Five former Memphis police officers charged with murder over the death of Tyre Nichols have pleaded not guilty in their first court appearance.

Mr. Nichols was arrested on January 7 by Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Desmond Mills Jr, Emmitt Martin III, and Justin Smith.

The Memphis Police Department fired them following an internal inquiry.

Mr. Nichols’ death spurred protests in the United States against police brutality.

The judge confirmed that the five defendants had pled not guilty to second-degree murder, aggravated assault, aggravated kidnapping, official misconduct, and official oppression charges.

Judge James Jones requested patience as lawyers prepared their cases.

“This case may take some time,” he said to the defendants standing before him alongside their lawyers at the Shelby County Criminal Court.

“We do ask for your continued patience and your continued civility in this case,” he said.

Mr. Nichols’ family appeared in court with their lawyer, Ben Crump.

RowVaughn Wells, Mr. Nichols’ mother, spoke to reporters outside court and pondered on meeting the ex-officers in person.

“They didn’t even have the guts to look me in the face,” she claimed.

She committed to attending every court hearing until “we get justice for my son”.

“Memphis and the rest of the world need to see that justice is served in this case, and it ought to happen sooner rather than later,” said lead prosecutor Paul Hagerman to reporters.

At the brief hearing, the ex-officers, clothed in suits and wearing black face masks, stood solemnly by their counsel.

None of the defendants said anything. When the judge asked, their counsel confirmed their not-guilty pleas.

After reviewing bodycam evidence of the brutal arrest, Memphis police arrested and detained the officers on January 26.

Mr. Nichols, 29, can be heard in the video screaming for his mother as he is pummelling by police after being pulled over for alleged careless driving.

Officers pepper-sprayed him, kicked and pummeled him, and he died three days later in the hospital.

Memphis Police Chief Carolyn Davis said the incident was “not simply a professional failing”, but “a failing of fundamental humanity towards another individual”.

RowVaughn Wells earlier stated that the race of the victim – in this case her son – was more important than the race of the criminals.

“It’s not about the color of the police officer. We don’t care if it’s black, white, pink, or purple. What they did was wrong,” she said.

The repercussions of the violent arrest have reverberated throughout the city.

In addition to the five officers directly involved being arrested, several more staff members were sacked and are being investigated.

A special team created to combat crime in Memphis has been dismantled.

The former policemen are currently free on bond, with the next hearing set for May 1st.

If convicted of murder, they could face up to 60 years in prison.

The United States and Papua New Guinea negotiate defence treaty

United States
  • The agreement will create the framework for closer military ties between the two countries.
  • The talks took place amid growing worry over China’s intentions towards self-ruled Taiwan.
  • Negotiators from both countries’ foreign affairs departments met in Honolulu.

The United States and Papua New Guinea have made “significant progress” on the language of a defense cooperation agreement that will create the framework for closer military ties between the two countries, according to the US Department of State on Saturday.

The talks take place amid growing worry over China’s intentions towards self-ruled Taiwan, as well as Beijing’s broad claims in the disputed South China Sea.

Negotiators from the United States State Department and the Department of Foreign Affairs of Papua New Guinea met in Honolulu, Hawaii, from Monday through Friday to discuss a defense cooperation agreement (DCA), according to the state department.

When complete and signed, the agreement “will be the foundational framework around which our two nations will enhance security cooperations and further strengthen our bilateral relationship,” the state department said.

According to the department, the deal will also boost the capabilities of Papua New Guinea‘s Defence Force and increase regional peace and security.

The Philippines allowed the US increased access to its military bases two weeks ago.

Ukraine’s and the United States’ defence chiefs discuss “priorities” for allies’ meeting

  • Volodymyr Zelenskiy and other Kyiv authorities have been encouraging allies to provide fighter planes.
  • US and Ukraine Defense Secretary addressed “priorities” for upcoming meetings.
  • The Ukraine Defense Contact Group will meet at NATO headquarters on Tuesday.

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov addressed “priorities” for upcoming meetings of Kyiv’s allies in Brussels, both parties announced late Saturday.

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and other Kyiv authorities have been encouraging allies to provide fighter planes after gaining a pledge of scores of contemporary battle tanks, including the US M1 Abrams, German Leopard 2, and British Challenger 2.

The Ukraine Defense Contact Group will meet at NATO headquarters on Tuesday, following a Jan. 20 session at the Ramstein Air Base in Germany that was critical in making the decision to send tanks.

According to Brigadier General Patrick Ryder, the Pentagon’s chief spokeswoman, Austin, and Reznikov stressed the significance of delivering promised capabilities as soon as possible.

After the call, Reznikov tweeted that “the United States is unwavering in its support of Ukraine,” adding that the two also discussed the situation on the front line.

The military of the United States and Canada have shot down a new unidentified object

United states and Canada
  • The unexplained object has been shot down over North American airspace.
  • Both Canadian and US aircraft were dispatched to locate the item.
  • It is the third object shot down in the previous week.

Another unexplained object has been shot down over North American airspace, according to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

He said the latest object “violated Canadian airspace” and was shot down over Yukon in northwest Canada.

Both Canadian and US aircraft were dispatched to locate the item, which Mr. Trudeau claims was shot down by a US F-22 fighter plane.

It is the third object shot down in the previous week over North America.

Last weekend, the US military destroyed a Chinese balloon, and on Friday, an unnamed object the size of a small vehicle was shot down off the coast of Alaska.

Mr. Trudeau said on Saturday that he issued the order and spoke with US Vice President Joe Biden.

“Canadian forces will now recover and analyze the wreckage of the object,” he wrote on Twitter.

The latest unidentified object was intercepted at 15:41 local time on Saturday while flying over central Yukon at roughly 40,000 feet (12,000 meters).

“Canadian military will immediately recover and analyze the debris of the object,” he posted on Twitter.

The latest unidentified object was intercepted at 15:41 local time on Saturday while flying over central Yukon at roughly 40,000 feet (12,000 meters).

small and cylindrical

She described it as “small” and “cylindrical,” but recovery operations are still ongoing to learn more.

Ms. Anand said it was taken out “about 100 miles” from the US border, adding it posed a “reasonable threat to civil aviation”.

She said it “appears to be smaller than the one shot down off the coast of South Carolina” last Saturday – meaning the giant Chinese suspected spy balloon that measured 200ft (60m) tall.

Earlier on Twitter, Prime Minister Trudeau praised the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), which is responsible for air defense in the United States and Canada and led the mission.

The White House said the object had been tracked and monitored “over the last 24 hours”.

“Out of an abundance of caution and at the recommendation of their militaries, President Biden and Prime Minister Trudeau authorised it to be taken down,” it said.

“The leaders discussed the importance of recovering the object in order to determine more details on its purpose or origin.”

The US Department of Defense acknowledged that two F-22 fighter jets took off from a military base near Anchorage, Alaska and that the object was shot down using an AIM 9X missile.

Pentagon Press Secretary Brig Gen Pat Ryder added that the FBI will be “working closely” with Canadian police.

Separately, the US military scrambled fighter fighters over Montana on Saturday when some airspace was closed, but it proved to be a “radar anomaly” and nothing odd was discovered.

Chinese spy balloon

The latest device to appear above North America comes barely a week after the US destroyed a suspected Chinese spy balloon.

On Friday another unspecified object was tracked and shot down over Alaska at the orders of US President Biden.

The military stated in a brief statement that US personnel, including members of the Alaska National Guard, were still searching for the object on the sea ice on Friday.

It provided no other information on the object’s capabilities, purpose, or provenance, but acknowledged that the FBI is assisting with the recovery near the Alaskan hamlet of Deadhorse.

“Arctic weather conditions, including wind chill, snow, and limited daylight, are a factor in this operation, and personnel will adjust recovery operations to maintain safety,” it added – and that the rescue operation will continue as weather permits.

Last weekend, defense officials told US media that wreckage from the Chinese balloon landed in 47ft (14m) of water near Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, which was shallower than predicted.

China has denied that the balloon, which initially entered US airspace on January 28th, was used for surveillance, claiming it was a weather instrument gone awry.

The United States, on the other hand, stated that the balloon is part of a fleet of surveillance balloons that have flown across five continents.

The balloon incident has strained relations between the United States and China, prompting Secretary of State Antony Blinken to cancel a trip to Beijing.

Chinese officials on Friday accused the US of “political manipulation and hype”.

In an interview on Thursday, President Biden defended his handling of the Chinese balloon, maintaining that it was not “a major breach”.
