Biden had skin cancer removed; no more treatment is required

Biden
  • Joe Biden had basal cell carcinoma a common type of skin cancer.
  • White House physician stated in a letter that all malignant tissue was effectively removed.
  • Biden will undergo dermatologic surveillance as part of his ongoing healthcare.

WASHINGTON: US President Joe Biden had a basal cell carcinoma — a common type of skin cancer — removed from his chest in February, and no more treatment is required, according to White House physician Kevin O’Connor on Friday.

The White House physician stated in a letter that all malignant tissue was effectively removed, and that Biden will undergo dermatologic surveillance as part of his ongoing healthcare, but that the spot has healed.

After a physical test, physicians certified Biden, 80, healthy and “fit for duty” last month. At the time, they stated that a small tumor on his chest had been excised and submitted for a biopsy.

According to O’Connor’s letter, basal cell carcinoma lesions do not spread or metastasize.

Biden’s health is being closely monitored as he prepares to run for a second presidential term in 2024. His wife, Jill Biden, has stated that he intends to run, although no formal announcement of the president’s intentions has been made.

Democrats are divided on whether Biden, who is already the oldest president in American history, should be the party’s nominee.

Biden’s three-hour interview with specialists in February at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, MD, was his second full examination since assuming office in January 2021.

Mexico is reconsidering its asylum initiative, following the controversial US announcement

Mexico
  • Mexico’s refugee support agency launched a trial initiative in southern Mexico.
  • The goal is to prevent such migrants from obtaining temporary passports.
  • Biden administration unveiled its proposed new asylum laws on Tuesday.

Mexico is reconsidering its policy towards asylum seekers in the aftermath of the Biden administration’s contentious new proposal to limit asylum eligibility in the United States.

COMAR, Mexico’s refugee support agency, launched a trial initiative in southern Mexico on Monday to investigate accelerating asylum denials to those deemed likely to travel to the United States.

The goal is to prevent such migrants from obtaining temporary passports given by COMAR while their cases are being processed, which they could then use to move north, which is a typical occurrence, according to COMAR’s chief Andrés Ramrez.

But, when the Biden administration unveiled its proposed new asylum laws on Tuesday, Ramrez stated that COMAR intends to abandon the strategy and use what it learned from the pilot program to develop another solution.

The US proposal, which human rights campaigners and immigration experts have slammed, primarily prohibits migrants who have not followed a legal path and instead traveled via other countries on their way to the US southern border from requesting asylum in the US. It would go into effect in May.

One proposed new ground for qualifying for US asylum is that they have been denied protection in a third nation through which they have traveled.

Ramrez now fears that accelerated asylum denials may make Mexico more appealing as a stopover for people seeking asylum in the United States.

“The new policy that was recently announced [by the United States] changes the whole thing. We need to rethink it,” Ramírez said.

Since last year, the number of migrants crossing the US-Mexico border has increased, with many people fleeing authoritarian governments and harsh economic circumstances in Venezuela, Cuba, Nicaragua, and Colombia.

Passing through Mexico

Though the one-week pilot program did not involve issuing swift denials, it did study the behaviors of individuals from nationalities deemed by COMAR to be more likely to be traveling for economic reasons than for international protection – Senegalese and Angolan migrants in particular, according to Ramrez.

Asylum seekers are compelled by Mexican law to remain in the state where they filed for asylum until the procedure is completed.

Asylum seekers who register with COMAR are protected from deportation, have access to the public health care system, and are eligible for employment.

Ramrez claims that his organization recently discovered that many refugees who began the asylum process in the southern Mexican city of Tapachula later abandoned it. They traveled within the country using a provisional COMAR document.

“They are abusing the system,” said Ramírez. “That shows us that many of these people are not really interested in (Mexico’s) refugee system and the asylum procedure.”

He calculated that over 70% of people from countries other than Haiti were abusing the system in Tapachula, Mexico.

Haitians, he claims, are completing the local asylum process at a higher rate.

A record number of applications

According to Ramrez, Mexico has seen an increase in asylum petitions in recent years.

According to COMAR data, approximately 13,000 persons applied for asylum in Mexico in January 2023. According to the data, this is more than double the number of asylum registrations from one year ago in January 2022.

If applications continue at this rate, 2023 could be the busiest year in the history of the UNHCR.

According to him, the record for the most applications ever received was reached in 2021, when COMAR received approximately 130,000 asylum applications.

“We were at risk of collapsing. It was terrible,” Ramírez said.

His top concern right now is to figure out how to keep Mexico’s asylum system from becoming overburdened, he says.

After analyzing the results of this week’s experiment, which documented the behaviors of individuals who likely qualified for expedited denials, his team will submit proposals with new solutions to combat what they see as system abuses – an approach that Ramrez says will eventually allow COMAR to prioritize asylum seekers who intend to make Mexico their home.

“For us, it’s very important to take care of the asylum system in Mexico,” Ramírez said. “If the asylum system is collapsed, then we’re done.”

Biden is scheduled to meet with the Bucharest Nine

Biden
  • Leaders of the Bucharest Nine are members of Nato’s eastern flank.
  • The lawmakers are among the most vocal proponents of military aid to Ukraine.
  • After years of the Cold War, these nine eastern European nations joined the Nato alliance.

Another important meeting is scheduled for later today between US President Joe Biden, who is on the penultimate day of his trip to Poland, and leaders of the Bucharest Nine. Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, and Lithuania are members of Nato’s eastern flank.

The lawmakers are among the most vocal proponents of military aid to Ukraine, and today’s negotiations will center on providing regional defense and additional aid.

After years of Cold War dominance by the then-Soviet Union, these nine eastern European nations joined the Nato alliance.

Since Russian President Vladimir Putin‘s takeover of Crimea from Ukraine in 2014, they have been critical of Russia’s aggression towards Ukraine.

Biden praises the ‘rock solid’ as Putin blames NATO for Russia’s war

Biden
  • Joe Biden ailed Western democracy for standing up to open Russian aggression.
  • Mr. Putin said that the West had aided Nazi Germany and had transformed Ukraine into an “anti-Russian” neo-Nazi regime.
  • Mr. Putin has repeatedly blamed the West and Nato.

Vladimir Putin’s antipathy for the West has grown as President Joseph Biden, fresh from a visit to Kyiv, hailed Western democracy for standing up to open Russian aggression.

Mr. Putin spoke first in a week packed with activities leading up to the anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on Friday.

He stated that the West had aided Nazi Germany and had transformed Ukraine into an “anti-Russian” neo-Nazi regime.

Mr. Biden later stated that autocrats understood only one word: “No, no, no!”

“Putin thought the world would roll over, he was wrong,” he said, vowing that Nato was more united than ever. Kyiv stood strong, proud, tall, and free and Western support for Ukraine would not fail, he added.

While welcoming him to Warsaw’s royal castle, Polish President Andrzej Duda stated that by traveling to Kyiv, Mr. Biden demonstrated that the free world is fearless. Nato’s job was to defend and support the free world, and Ukraine “must win this battle,” according to the organization.

No indication

Mr. Putin’s speech scarcely touched on Russia’s military accomplishments in Ukraine, and there was no indication of how the war may finish. The primary military news came from Yevgeny Prigozhin, the leader of the Wagner mercenary group, who accused the chief of staff and defense minister of attempting to destroy his outfit and deprive it of weaponry.

Russia’s president did, however, declare the suspension of the New Start nuclear arms control accord struck with the United States in 2010. The agreement limits the number of nuclear warheads, and Nato and UK leaders have pushed Trump to reconsider.

He also stated that he had deployed new ground-based combat systems. Last year, he promised to use “all means at our disposal” to safeguard Russia and the territory it had acquired in Ukraine.

The reality was among the first casualties of Mr. Putin’s lengthy address at an exhibition center near the Kremlin.

“They were the ones who started the war… we’re using force to stop it,” President Putin asserted in his address to both houses of Russia’s parliament.

Although there have been no Western troops on the ground in Ukraine, Russia’s foreign ministry appeared to back up this allegation when it summoned US Ambassador Lynne Tracy on Tuesday, stating that Washington should take steps to evacuate “US-NATO military and equipment” from the country.

Putin repeatedly blamed the West and Nato

Mr. Putin has repeatedly blamed the West and Nato, and he repeated many of his accusations from his Broadcast address on the day of the invasion a year ago. He brought up the Iraq war and the bombing of Belgrade but avoided discussing Russia’s protracted and destructive role in the Syrian civil war, its invasion of neighboring Georgia, or its territorial grab in Crimea.

There was a terrible reminder of the human cost of Europe’s most lethal invasion since World War II as he spoke.

Six people were killed and several more were injured when Russian munitions hit Kherson, which was liberated from Russian soldiers in November. In the city center, a bus stop, a drugstore, and residential areas were targeted, and local media reported that a kindergarten was among the structures targeted.

In his nightly address on Tuesday, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia’s attacks “did not and could not have any military purpose”, and were instead intended to sow “terror”.

He noted that despite intense pressure, Ukrainian forces remained on the front lines in eastern Ukraine, where the majority of the present fighting is taking place.

What is the New Start treaty?

The New Start deal, signed in 2010 by two then-presidents, Barack Obama and Dmitry Medvedev, was intended to prevent nuclear war. It restricts the amount of strategic nuclear warheads that each country can deploy and gives each country the authority to inspect the other.

The agreement went into effect in 2011 and was extended ten years later, despite the fact that weapons inspections were hampered by the Covid epidemic.

Each side has a limit of 1,550 long-range nuclear warheads, which is lower than the prior Start agreement.

The two former Cold War adversaries control nearly all of the world’s nuclear weapons. Notwithstanding aggressive rhetoric on both sides during the Ukraine war, Moscow has previously stated that it wished to preserve the treaty in force.

In a highly complicated security operation, President Biden visited Warsaw a day after visiting Kyiv to see President Zelensky.

The visit, according to the Polish president, conveyed “an enormously important political signal, mainly for Ukraine,” but it was also a sign that the free world and the US president were with them and did not forget.

Mr. Biden lavished admiration on Mr. Zelensky and the Ukrainians who had recaptured the area captured in the early days of the war.

He did, however, express support for Moldova’s pro-EU president, Maia Sandu, in the face of suspicions that Russia was conspiring to destabilize the existing government.

President Putin inflamed tensions in Moldova on Tuesday by canceling a 2012 directive that supported Moldova’s sovereignty in determining the future of Transnistria, a breakaway territory of Moldova where Russian forces are stationed.

An attack against one is an attack against all

President Biden is scheduled to meet with leaders of nine nations on Nato’s eastern flank on Wednesday, and he went out of his way to reiterate the United States support for one of the alliance’s key objectives.

Nato members agree to support any other member who is attacked under Article 5. Mr. Biden stated that the US was “rock solid” in its commitment to both the alliance and Article 5.

“Every member of Nato knows it and Russia knows it as well – an attack against one is an attack against all.”

Italy’s Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, followed up Mr. Biden’s visit to Kyiv on Tuesday with her first trip to Ukraine. Visiting the towns of Bucha and Irpin, where Russian troops murdered hundreds of civilians, she said Ukrainians could count on Italy: “We have been with you since the start and we will be until the end.”

Biden will depict the Ukraine conflict as a fight for democracy

ukraine
  • Joe Biden will deliver his speech in Warsaw, Poland, as part of a three-day visit to the country.
  • It will come just hours after Russia’s president blamed the West for the war.
  • Mr. Biden paid a surprise visit to Ukraine on Monday.

At a speech later on Monday, US President Joe Biden is set to lay out his perspective on the Ukraine conflict as a battle for democracy.

He will deliver his speech in Warsaw, Poland, as part of a three-day visit to the country.

It will come just hours after Russia’s president blamed the West for the war.

Mr. Biden paid a surprise visit to Ukraine on Monday to reinforce America’s support for Kyiv.

Both leaders’ statements come only days before the year anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

In Warsaw, the US president is expected to emphasize the critical role the US has played in rallying Western support for Ukraine against Russian aggression.

But he will also be looking to shore up support for his policy at home, where some politicians are expressing doubts about the scale of US involvement.

Earlier on Tuesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin made his annual state of the nation speech – accusing the West of hypocrisy and of withdrawing from “fundamental agreements”.

“I want to repeat: it is them who are culpable for the war, and we are using force to stop it,” he said to great applause.

Mr. Putin also reiterated his unfounded claim that Moscow had been facing a Nazi threat from Ukraine, which he used as justification to launch his “special military operation”.

Before to his speech, US Vice President Joe Biden will meet with Poland’s President Andrzej Duda and other central European allies to discuss bilateral cooperation and strengthening Nato’s defenses against aggression.

That’s after the president met his Ukrainian colleague, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in Kyiv on Monday – assuring a news conference that the US will assist Ukraine for “as long as it takes”.

“We have every confidence you’re going to continue to prevail,” he said.

The two also went to a memorial for troops who perished in the nine years since Russia annexed Crimea and its proxy forces took control of sections of the eastern Donbas region.

Following the visit, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced a new $450 million (£373 million) package of security support for Ukraine, as well as an additional $10 million in emergency aid to preserve Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.

A new round of sanctions targeting individuals and firms “seeking to escape or backfill Russia’s war machine” will be unveiled later this week.

The United States is one of Ukraine’s most important allies, having already provided billions of dollars in military aid.

Mr. Biden recently declared that the United States would supply 31 combat tanks and longer-range missiles, but has so far declined to send F-16 fighter fighters, despite repeated requests from Ukraine.

However, Mr. Zelensky on Monday said that he had discussed with Joe Biden the possibility of the US sending other weapons.

While Biden visits Ukraine, China’s top diplomat heads to Moscow

Biden
  • Top Chinese diplomat Wang Yi visits Moscow.
  • Chinese Foreign Ministry said, stay firm on the side of dialogue & peace and work constructively for de-escalation.”
  • Officials in Washington, D.C. are concerned that China may contemplate providing Moscow with “lethal support.”

The unexpected visit to Kyiv by US President Joe Biden on February 20 will be followed by a visit to Moscow by top Chinese diplomat Wang Yi. Both visits take place in the days leading up to the anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Biden presented a $500 million aid package for Ukraine and new penalties on individuals who support Russia’s war in Ukraine during his meeting with President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Officials in Washington, D.C. are concerned that China may contemplate providing Moscow with “lethal support,” such as weaponry, according to various sources.

“We’ve been keeping a careful eye on this,” US Secretary of State Antony Blinken told CBS during the Munich Security Conference. According to Blinken, the United States has previously observed Chinese enterprises offering non-lethal assistance to Russia.

Redline

In an interview, US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield stated that “it would be a red line” if China supplied lethal aid to Russia.

“We welcome the Chinese announcement that they want peace because that’s what we always want to pursue in situations like this,” she said. “But we also have to be clear that if there are any thoughts and efforts by the Chinese and others to provide lethal support to the Russians in their brutal attack against Ukraine, that is unacceptable.”

The Chinese Foreign Ministry said on Feb. 20 that they will “stay firm on the side of dialogue & peace and work constructively for de-escalation.”

However, the Chinese government has avoided criticizing Russia outright for the full-scale invasion, going as far as to declare, “It is the U.S., not China, that has been pouring weapons into the battlefield in Ukraine. The U.S. is in no position to tell China what to do. China will never accept US finger-pointing or coercion on China-Russia relations.”

Putin ‘dead wrong’ on Ukraine war says Biden

Biden
  • President Joe Biden meets with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv.
  • The visit is considered a show of unity.
  • Biden said that there would be a discussion about further extending US support to Ukraine.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is “dead wrong” to believe Ukraine is weak and the West is divided, said US Vice President Joe Biden after meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv.

“When Putin launched his invasion about a year ago, he believed Ukraine was weak and the West was split. He believed he could outlast us. But he was completely wrong,” Biden remarked.

Biden made an unannounced visit to Ukraine today to meet with Zelenskyy to “reaffirm our unwavering and unflagging commitment to Ukraine’s democracy”.

The visit is also considered a show of unity only days before the one-year anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“As the world prepares to mark the one-year anniversary of Russia’s brutal invasion of Ukraine, I am in Kyiv today to meet with President Zelenskyy and reaffirm our unwavering and unflagging commitment to Ukraine’s democracy, sovereignty, and territorial integrity,” the US President said.

America stands with Ukraine

“America stands with Ukraine. Ukraine stands, Kyiv stands, democracy stands,” the president said, adding, “Putin’s war conquest is failing. The Russian economy is struggling.”

Biden also said that there would be a discussion about further extending US support to Ukraine. “Today, in Kyiv, I am meeting with President Zelenskyy and his team for an extended discussion on our support for Ukraine,” he said.

“I will announce another delivery of critical equipment, including artillery ammunition, anti-armor systems, and air surveillance radars to help protect the Ukrainian people from aerial bombardments. And I will share that later this week, we will announce additional sanctions against elites and companies that are trying to evade or backfill Russia’s war machine,” Biden added.

This is President Biden’s first trip to a conflict zone. His recent predecessors, Donald Trump, Barack Obama, and George W. Bush, all paid surprise visits to Afghanistan and Iraq during their respective presidencies to meet with US troops and the leaders of the respective countries.

The FBI searches Biden’s papers at the University of Delaware

FBI
  • FBI performed two searches last month.
  • On two separate days, investigators retrieved multiple boxes from the campus.
  • Mr. Biden and his team consented to the search, thus no warrant was required.

The FBI performed two searches at the University of Delaware in the last month to see if US President Joe Biden contributed any potentially secret materials.

On two separate days, investigators retrieved multiple boxes from the campus.

Mr. Biden’s alma mater houses thousands of cartons of documents from his service in the Senate.

Donald Trump is under criminal investigation for his handling of secret data.

Documents marked classified have been discovered in recent months at Mr. Biden’s Delaware home and offices in Washington, DC. During a search of his private property in Wilmington last month, the FBI discovered some of the data.

According to sources familiar with the inquiry, the searches at the University of Delaware took place around the end of January and the beginning of February.

The discovered documents did not appear to have classified markings, but the FBI is now evaluating the files.

No warrant was required

US president and his team consented to the search, thus no warrant was required.

Mr. Biden gave the college 1,850 boxes of information in 2012, but those files have not been made public since then.

Mr. Biden’s personal attorney, the US Department of Justice, and the University of Delaware have yet to respond.

The Justice Department has chosen Robert Hur as special counsel to conduct the inquiry into how Mr. Biden handled sensitive data.

The residence of former US Vice-President Mike Pence was also inspected last week after his aides revealed that they had discovered secret materials during their own search.

Former President Trump is facing a separate inquiry after FBI officers executing a search warrant at his Florida Mar-a-Lago home last year discovered hundreds of files with secret markings.

Blinken to vow quake support on his first visit to Turkey

Anotny Blinken
  • Antony Blinken will visit Turkey on Sunday to discuss relief efforts.
  • Blinken will visit the Incirlik air base.
  • The top US diplomat will also attend the Munich Security Conference.

WASHINGTON – US Secretary of State Antony Blinken will visit Turkey on Sunday to discuss relief efforts following a devastating earthquake, his first visit to the NATO partner that has had strained relations with Washington.

Blinken will visit the Incirlik air base, through which the US has sent aid, and then hold meetings in Ankara on “continuing US support,” according to State Department spokesman Ned Price.

The top US diplomat will also attend the Munich Security Conference, where the Ukraine crisis and tensions with China will take center stage, and will pay a visit to Turkey‘s old foe Greece, a NATO ally.

The US has flown in 200 rescues and donated an initial $85 million in humanitarian aid to Turkey, deploying Black Hawk and Chinook helicopters to carry supplies to the hardest-hit areas.

The visit, which was planned prior to the February 6 earthquake that killed almost 40,000 people in the nation and neighboring Syria, will be Blinken’s first to Turkey in more than two years.

President Joe Biden was elected after promising to take a greater distance from his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan, whom Biden has previously branded an autocrat.

However, the Biden administration now sees Turkey as useful in mediating between Russia and Ukraine, particularly in a pact to export grain through the Black Sea to alleviate global shortages.

The Biden administration has expressed support for Turkey’s request to purchase F-16 fighter fighters, but the transaction has been halted in Congress owing to worries about Turkey’s human rights record and threats to Greece.

The US has been looking for methods to persuade Erdogan to drop his objections to Sweden and Finland joining NATO, both of which have abandoned their previous neutrality since Russia invaded Ukraine.

Turkey has been the lone holdout, with Erdogan pressuring Sweden to crack down on Kurdish insurgents considered terrorists by Ankara.

During signs of progress, Erdogan reiterated his criticism of Sweden following a rally outside Turkey’s embassy in Stockholm in which a far-right activist set fire to Islam’s sacred book, the Quran.

In recent years, the US has been enraged by Turkey’s purchase of an advanced air defense system from Moscow, claiming that it will allow NATO’s main foe to zero in on Western fighter jets.

When Blinken visits Athens on Monday, he is expected to discuss tensions with Turkey, but the mood has dropped since the earthquake as Greece aids its neighbor.

Blinken will begin his journey in Frankfurt on Thursday and then travel to Munich for the Munich Security Conference, an annual gathering of leaders held a week before the anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Blinken will be joined in Munich by Vice President Kamala Harris, who is part of a spate of US politicians visiting Europe in honour of the anniversary, with Biden scheduled to visit Poland next week.

Senior Chinese diplomat Wang Yi is also due in Munich, which might lead to a meeting with Blinken, though US sources say nothing has been decided.

Blinken was scheduled to travel to Beijing earlier this month, the first trip by a top US ambassador in more than four years, to try to keep tensions between the world’s two largest economies from spiraling out of hand.

But he quickly canceled the trip after the US announced that a Chinese surveillance balloon, which was eventually shot down, had been sighted over the US mainland.

Mexico detains cartel member suspected of leading fentanyl trade

Mexico
  • Security forces apprehended a suspected top cartel member.
  • The arrest occurred weeks after US President Joe Biden visited Mexico.
  • The suspect is identified as a top logistics officer for the infamous narco trafficker.

MEXICO CITY: The Mexican defense ministry announced on Sunday that security forces had apprehended a suspected top cartel member accused of managing the region’s manufacturing of fentanyl, which has killed hundreds in the United States.

The arrest, which occurred on Thursday in the province of Sinaloa, came only weeks after US President Joe Biden visited Mexico and followed the recent high-profile arrest of cartel head Ovidio Guzman.

The suspect is identified as a top logistics officer for the infamous narco trafficker known as “Mayo Zambada,” who co-led the strong Sinaloa cartel.

“It should be noted that the accused is considered the main producer of fentanyl and methamphetamine pills, in addition to carrying out the large-scale transfer of cocaine from Central and South America to the U.S,” the ministry said in a statement.

Following the standard procedure in Mexico, it named him as Jose “N”, not giving his full name.

The military of the United States and Canada have shot down a new unidentified object

United states and Canada
  • The unexplained object has been shot down over North American airspace.
  • Both Canadian and US aircraft were dispatched to locate the item.
  • It is the third object shot down in the previous week.

Another unexplained object has been shot down over North American airspace, according to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

He said the latest object “violated Canadian airspace” and was shot down over Yukon in northwest Canada.

Both Canadian and US aircraft were dispatched to locate the item, which Mr. Trudeau claims was shot down by a US F-22 fighter plane.

It is the third object shot down in the previous week over North America.

Last weekend, the US military destroyed a Chinese balloon, and on Friday, an unnamed object the size of a small vehicle was shot down off the coast of Alaska.

Mr. Trudeau said on Saturday that he issued the order and spoke with US Vice President Joe Biden.

“Canadian forces will now recover and analyze the wreckage of the object,” he wrote on Twitter.

The latest unidentified object was intercepted at 15:41 local time on Saturday while flying over central Yukon at roughly 40,000 feet (12,000 meters).

“Canadian military will immediately recover and analyze the debris of the object,” he posted on Twitter.

small and cylindrical

She described it as “small” and “cylindrical,” but recovery operations are still ongoing to learn more.

Ms. Anand said it was taken out “about 100 miles” from the US border, adding it posed a “reasonable threat to civil aviation”.

She said it “appears to be smaller than the one shot down off the coast of South Carolina” last Saturday – meaning the giant Chinese suspected spy balloon that measured 200ft (60m) tall.

Earlier on Twitter, Prime Minister Trudeau praised the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), which is responsible for air defense in the United States and Canada and led the mission.

The White House said the object had been tracked and monitored “over the last 24 hours”.

“Out of an abundance of caution and at the recommendation of their militaries, President Biden and Prime Minister Trudeau authorised it to be taken down,” it said.

“The leaders discussed the importance of recovering the object in order to determine more details on its purpose or origin.”

The US Department of Defense acknowledged that two F-22 fighter jets took off from a military base near Anchorage, Alaska and that the object was shot down using an AIM 9X missile.

Pentagon Press Secretary Brig Gen Pat Ryder added that the FBI will be “working closely” with Canadian police.

Separately, the US military scrambled fighter fighters over Montana on Saturday when some airspace was closed, but it proved to be a “radar anomaly” and nothing odd was discovered.

Chinese spy balloon

The latest device to appear above North America comes barely a week after the US destroyed a suspected Chinese spy balloon.

On Friday another unspecified object was tracked and shot down over Alaska at the orders of US President Biden.

The military stated in a brief statement that US personnel, including members of the Alaska National Guard, were still searching for the object on the sea ice on Friday.

It provided no other information on the object’s capabilities, purpose, or provenance, but acknowledged that the FBI is assisting with the recovery near the Alaskan hamlet of Deadhorse.

“Arctic weather conditions, including wind chill, snow, and limited daylight, are a factor in this operation, and personnel will adjust recovery operations to maintain safety,” it added – and that the rescue operation will continue as weather permits.

Last weekend, defense officials told US media that wreckage from the Chinese balloon landed in 47ft (14m) of water near Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, which was shallower than predicted.

China has denied that the balloon, which initially entered US airspace on January 28th, was used for surveillance, claiming it was a weather instrument gone awry.

The United States, on the other hand, stated that the balloon is part of a fleet of surveillance balloons that have flown across five continents.

The balloon incident has strained relations between the United States and China, prompting Secretary of State Antony Blinken to cancel a trip to Beijing.

Chinese officials on Friday accused the US of “political manipulation and hype”.

In an interview on Thursday, President Biden defended his handling of the Chinese balloon, maintaining that it was not “a major breach”.

Biden, Lula pledged to defend democracy in Americas

  • The two largest countries in the Americas had successfully defended their democracies.
  • Biden and Lula met in the Oval Office and expressed camaraderie for their comparable paths.
  • Biden and Lula emphasized their shared commitment to conserving the Amazon rainforest.

WASHINGTON – President Joe Biden and his Brazilian colleague Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva announced at the White House that the two largest countries in the Americas had successfully defended their democracies and would now collaborate to combat the climate issue.

“Both our nations’ strong democracies have been tested,” Biden told Lula, and “both in the United States and Brazil, democracy prevailed.”

Biden and Lula met in the Oval Office and expressed camaraderie for their comparable paths.

Biden defeated Donald Trump in 2020, but a mob of Trump followers invaded Congress two months later, believing his conspiracy idea that he was the true election winner.

In Brazil, Lula defeated right-winger Jair Bolsonaro and was sworn in as president in January, but a mob of Bolsonaro supporters attacked government facilities immediately afterward.

“We have some issues on which we can work together,” Lula told Biden. “First is to never again allow” the anti-democratic mob attacks.

Touting Brazil’s return to the international arena, Lula said his predecessor’s “world started and ended with fake news – in the morning, afternoon, and at night. It seemed that he despised international relations.”

“Sounds familiar,” Biden replied, referring to Trump.

Amazon financing?

Biden and Lula emphasized their shared commitment to conserving the Amazon rainforest and combating global change, measures that both Bolsonaro and Trump have ignored.

Biden said their “shared values… put us on the same page, particularly, especially, when it comes to the climate crisis.”

However, it is unclear whether the Biden administration will agree to contribute to the Amazon Fund, a global initiative to fund anti-deforestation initiatives in Brazil.

“I think they will,” Lula told reporters. “I not only think they will, but I think that it’s necessary they participate.”

However, he then said that in the talks “I didn’t specifically discuss an Amazon Fund. I discussed the responsibility of rich countries to assume responsibility to fund countries with rainforests and not only in Brazil.”

In the Oval Office, Lula informed Biden that during his previous presidency, from 2003 to 2010, he committed Brazil to drastic reductions in deforestation of the world’s largest rainforest, which is sometimes referred to as the “lungs of the earth” due to its tremendous greenhouse gas absorption.

However, “in the last few years, the rainforest in the Amazon was invaded by political irrationality, human irrationality, because we had a president who sent people to deforest, sent gold diggers into the Indigenous areas,” he said, referring to Bolsonaro.

Biden has made US leadership in combating climate change one of his top priorities, beginning with re-entry into the Paris climate agreement after Trump quit the landmark agreement aimed at slowing global warming.

Ukraine divide

One point of contention between Biden and Lula is Ukraine, which was not mentioned during their inaugural remarks before media were escorted out of the Oval Office.

Biden has led an unparalleled Western effort to rally behind Ukraine, giving money, ammunition, military training, and diplomatic backing as the country battle Russia’s war machine.

However, several major democratic countries, most notably India, South Africa, and Brazil, have mostly stood on the sidelines, refusing to provide military assistance to Ukraine and sending contradictory signals politically.

After his meeting was over, Lula told reporters that he wanted to assemble an international “group of countries that aren’t directly or indirectly involved in the war of Russia against Ukraine so that we can have a possibility to build peace.”

“That is, I’m convinced that we need to find a way out to end this war. I found Biden shared the same concern,” he said. “The first thing is to stop the war.”
