ISLAMABAD: A team of World Bank Economists met Chairman Federal Board of Revenue(FBR) Asim Ahmad at FBR HQs to discuss improvement in tax compliance and facilitation through behavioral intervention.

The World Bank team comprising Mr. Jonathan Karver, Ms. Ana Maria Mendez, Ms. Lucy Pan and Ms. Irum Tauqeer apprised Chairman FBR about International experiences and discussed potential areas of interventions in Pakistan. The Chairman reaffirmed commitment to continue making efforts to improve taxpayer experience.

The two sides agreed to continue cooperation to identify new areas where taxpayers can be facilitated in complying with tax obligations.

50,000 winterised tents to be dispatched to Turkey: PM

LAHORE: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday said that around 50,000 winterised tents would be dispatched to the quake-hit Turkey by March 23 this year.

The prime minister, who chaired a meeting to review the manufacturing of tents and other relief goods for Turkey, said the relief supply for the earthquake victims of Turkey and Syria would be dispatched within the given timeframe.

He directed the authorities concerned to carry out random checking of the winterised tents to ensure their quality.

The prime minister told the meeting that the finance ministry, despite financial constraints, provided resources for supply of relief goods which was appreciable.

He also thanked the National Disaster Management Authority, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal, and Information and Broadcasting Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb, and Pakistan’s ambassadors to Turkey and Syria for their efforts for relief of the quake affected people.

He said the Pakistani philanthropists were donating relief goods wholeheartedly for those who suffered the losses caused by the earthquake.

The NDMA Chairman General Inam Haider Malik, finance and planning ministers and Pakistan’s ambassador in Turkiye briefed the meeting on the status of relief supplies to the quake-hit Turkiye and Syria.

It was told that by 23rd of March, 34 flights would leave for Turkiye carrying 50,000 winterised tents and 38,000 blankets for Turkiye, and 22,000 blankets and 10,000 ration bags for Syria.

It was told that two cargo flights carrying 220 tons of relief goods would leave for Turkiye by today (Friday) while a Pakistan Navy ship would carry relief goods to Syria.

Petrol prices expected to rise by more than 13 rupees

Islamabad:  Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) has proposed two summaries to modify the prices of petroleum products as per the IMF conditions the petrol prices are likely to increase by more than 13 rupees.

Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) has sent the summaries to the government to modify the prices of petroleum products, as per sources. 

It has been proposed to impose GST from 2 to 5 percent on petroleum products as per the conditions of the IMF. Based on the summary approval, a 2% GST will be implemented, raising petrol prices by Rs. 5.55, while a 5% GST will raise petrol prices by Rs 13.60.

An increase in the price of Diesel by Rs 10 to Rs 15 has also been proposed.

The OGRA proposal also says that prices can also be maintained by levying taxes commensurate with global markets.

Mr. Ishaq Dar (Finance Minister) will make the ultimate decision considering the dollar rate and the oil prices in the global market. The decision will commence after consulting with the Prime Minister.

US Ambassador to Pakistan Donald Blome met with Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, in which economic and trade relations were discussed while opportunities to further strengthen economic relations were also discussed.

In the meeting, Ishaq Dar gave a briefing on Pakistan’s national and international financial responsibilities and also informed about the government’s policies in the difficult economic situation. It was also agreed to further promote the existing bilateral relations between the two countries.

On this occasion, US Ambassador Donald Blome expressed his satisfaction over the government’s policies for economic stability and economic development and said that there are strong relations between Pakistan and the United States.

Last month, US Ambassador Donald Blome called on Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and discussed a range of bilateral issues.

The prime minister reaffirmed Pakistan’s resolve to deepen economic and trade engagement with the United States. He reiterated that Pakistan attached importance to its longstanding ties with the United States.

PM Shehbaz Sharif stressed that structured and broad-based Pakistan-US engagement is critical to advancing both countries’ shared goals in both bilateral and regional domains.

The prime minister thanked the United States for its continued support for Pakistan’s post-flood reconstruction and rehabilitation efforts, including at International Conference on Resilient Pakistan in Geneva.

Ambassador Blome said the United States would continue to support Pakistan’s post-flood recovery as well as the Government’s efforts for economic development and reform.
