‘It’s a catastrophe’: PAD holds donation drive for flood victims

PAD
  • Pakistan has received unprecedented rainfall, causing floods that have affected 33 million people.
  • PAD organization shipped over 42 tonnes of relief aid to the South Asian country over the weekend.
  • Relief efforts by the Pakistan Association Dubai are currently focusing largely on accruing tents.

The Pakistan Association Dubai is organizing a fundraising campaign to assist millions of people affected by the country’s devastating floods.

Despite the fact that the organization shipped over 42 tonnes of relief aid to the South Asian country over the weekend, hundreds of UAE citizens continue to give to the cause.

Donations will be gathered and packed at the Pakistan Association Dubai offices in the Oud Metha district, in collaboration with the Dar Al Ber Society.

Over the last few weeks, Pakistan has received unprecedented rainfall, causing floods that have affected 33 million people and killed over 1,300 people. With one-third of the country already submerged, half a million people are at risk.

Relief efforts by the Pakistan Association Dubai are currently focusing largely on accruing tents, dry food items, hygiene kits, blankets, towels, and bedsheets.

“We’ve had a great response from the community so far. Lots of schools and corporations have reached out to us and want to join the campaign,” Faisal Ikram, president of the Pakistan Association Dubai, told The National.

“I was in Pakistan in the 2010 floods and I know the experience of these floods.

“I think this is a much bigger catastrophe than the 2010 floods. One-third of the country is underwater and a lot of these areas are where people depend on crops or cattle for livelihood. It’s going to be a massive effort required to rebuild them.”

Dr. Ikram expects that the donation drive will continue for another two or three months.

More than 200 residents across the UAE have volunteered to help with the campaign, including delivering and packing the relief items.

Abdulla Osama, 21, is one of the volunteers who has been turning up almost daily to pack clothes.

“I feel it’s my duty. What is happening in Pakistan right now is terrible. I want to help as much as I can,” he said.

“I’m happy to come every day and help where it is needed. I’m also very happy to see how many people are volunteering and donating. It’s a great community effort.”

The Pakistan Association Dubai is accepting donations from 9 am to 9 pm, and people have been coming in throughout the day, bringing in boxes filled with relief items.

Dhruv Bhatt is an Indian businessman who brought donations on Monday.

“I’ve brought non-perishables like rice and lentils. We’re trying to do as much as we can by collecting from families and friends,” he said.

“It’s really sad seeing the kind of events that are unfolding there. People are really struggling.”

Pupils from schools across the UAE have created their own packages for the victims, with handwritten notes and small stationary items.

The next step of the program, according to Dr. Ikram, will seek to reconstruct communities.

He also stated that they are collecting cash donations, which would be handled through the Dar Al Ber charity and utilized mostly to restore infrastructure.

“Phase two will include reconstructing people’s homes, villages, schools, tiny hospitals or clinics, and mosques,” he explained.

Since the floods, the UAE has been offering aid to Pakistan.

Hundreds of volunteers assisted in the packing of thousands of essential relief children and food supplies on Saturday.

The “We Stand Together” national community event was hosted at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre, Dubai Expo City, and the Expo Centre in Sharjah.

By the end of the day, volunteers packed 1.2 tonnes of supplies into 30,000 boxes.

The food supplies included flour, rice, lentils, tomato paste, and oil, while relief kits consisted of essential toiletries for women and children, such as diapers, sanitary pads, and soaps.

The UAE is operating an air bridge to transport humanitarian aid.

On August 27, President Sheikh Mohamed ordered urgent aid to be sent to Pakistan.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, also ordered aid worth Dh50 million ($13.6m) be delivered to the country.

Floods in Pakistan: A Dubai expat group sends 300 tonnes of aid

Pakistan
  • Around Dh1.7 million in aid and seven containers have been distributed across Pakistan.
  • The Association launched an emergency appeal for donations to flood victims.
  • The death toll from the devastating floods is expected to exceed 1,600.

Around Dh1.7 million in aid and seven containers have been distributed across Pakistan to assist millions of people affected by heavy rains and floods in recent months.

On September 5, the Association launched an emergency appeal for donations to flood victims in collaboration with the Dar Al Ber Society and the Department of Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities.

The Association is also taking part in the UAE‘s national aid initiative, “We Stand Together,” and has mobilised the community to support its countrymen.

The death toll from the devastating floods is expected to exceed 1,600, with over 13,000 people injured. Authorities in Pakistan estimate that over 33 million people have been directly affected by the unprecedented floods that have submerged vast swaths of the country, forcing many to live in makeshift tents. The heavy rains and floods have killed over 1.1 million cattle and domestic animals.

The United Nations and the government have blamed unprecedented floods on global climate change following record-breaking summer temperatures.

The Pakistan Association Dubai has also delivered over 3,575 food packages, 3,400 kg of clothing, 7,200 kg of dry ration, over 1,300 tents and tarpaulins, 2,500 kg of dates, 350 kg of hygiene items, 750 blankets, 200 kg shoes, 520 kg of crockery, and much more.

Relief efforts are underway in Sukkur (Sindh), Bela (Balochistan), and Charsada (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa). Hundreds of patients were treated in medical camps, and rations containing all basic items such as rice, flour, oil, tea, milk, and spices were distributed to thousands of families. While the kitchen has fed thousands of people and families affected by the rains.

The Association has raised Dh656,000 and hopes to raise Dh1 million for flood victims.

The United Arab Emirates and neighbouring Gulf countries have been the primary sources of aid for flood victims in Pakistan. Over 40 aid flights have landed in the UAE, making it the largest supplier of aid to flood-affected areas, followed by the United States, Turkey, Oman, China, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia.

A large number of volunteers from across the UAE recently helped pack food and hygiene kits into cardboard boxes for flood victims in Pakistan at Expo City Dubai.

Pakistan Association Dubai will construct a model community

Pakistan Association Dubai
  • The hamlet will include 64 residences, a medical clinic, a mosque, a school, a playground, and a park.
  • It will consist of 16 clusters, each with four houses.
  • Construction will begin on January 1, 2023, and will be completed by the end of March.

Pakistan Association Dubai (PAD), in partnership with Al Khidmat Foundation, will construct a model hamlet for flood victims in Pakistan’s Balochistan province’s Lasbela district.

The hamlet will include 64 residences, a medical clinic, a mosque, a school, a playground, and a park. It will consist of 16 clusters, each with four houses, and will serve approximately 600 people from the Lasbela district, which was one of the most impacted places in the recent floods.

Solar energy will be used to power the project, which will supply communities with clean water, sanitation, and sewage services.

Construction will begin on January 1, 2023, and will be completed by the end of March.

“Earlier, when we launched this campaign, we envisioned building this model village. There were several paperwork and logistics which we had to ensure were well-aligned to help this project materialize. We remain grateful to Community Development Authority (CDA), the Dar Al Ber Society, and the Department of Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities for their continuous efforts to facilitate our relief work. For donations, I request you to be a part of this noble cause,” said Dr. Ikram.

Al Khidmat Pakistan, which assisted PAD with flood relief efforts, will also assist in the development and completion of this multi-component project.

Pakistan has experienced the greatest floods in its history, destroying hundreds of thousands of homes and damaging many public health facilities, water systems, and infrastructure.

This year’s high monsoon rains in Pakistan affected over 33 million people, including approximately 16 million children, destroying key infrastructure such as roads, bridges, schools, hospitals, and public health facilities.

Previously, Pakistan Association Dubai contributed 435 tonnes of aid and 15 containers to flood relief efforts.

According to the Organization, the mosque, dispensary, and solar-powered water project have already been funded.

“I was waiting for PAD to announce this because I wanted to build a mosque there,” said the anonymous donor who supported the mosque. We know that floods have destroyed homes and villages. This is my and my family’s way of contributing to the rehabilitation of our Balochistani brothers and sisters.”

Each house in the model town will cost Dh6,000 to build (Rs366,000).

PAD said the material being used is low-cost but without compromising on the quality. The substructure will be built using cement, sand, and crushed. Masonry work will be done using blocks, cement, and sand. For the superstructure, blocks, cement and sand will be used. Internal and external plaster work will be carried out using cement and sand. The floor is to be made with hilly sand and the roof precast will be girder with slab, and cement for filling the door and window.

“After thorough monitoring and evaluation, the project status will be communicated to the donor as per the agreed reporting schedule,” the Association said.
