Israel – Discovery of Ostrich eggs up to 7,500 years old near ancient pit

Ostrich
  • Eggs are estimated to be between 4,000 and 7,500 years old.
  • They had been uncovered during an archaeological dig.
  • Additional examination of the eggs will reveal more about their uses and age.

Eight ancient ostrich eggs, estimated to be between 4,000 and 7,500 years old, were found close to an old fire pit in the Negev, a desert area in the south of Israel, and they turned out to be treasured by archaeologists there.

The Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) said on Thursday that they had been uncovered during an archaeological dig in the Beer Milka farmlands.

Additional examination of the eggs will reveal more about their uses and age.“We found a campsite, which extends over about 200 sq. m (2,153 square feet) that was used by the desert nomads since prehistoric times,” Lauren Davis, the IAA excavation director, said in the release.

“At the site, we found burnt stones, flint, and stone tools as well as pottery sherds, but the truly special find is this collection of ostrich eggs. Although the nomads did not build permanent structures at this site, the finds allow us to feel their presence in the desert.”

Davis added that the campsites were covered over by the dunes, keeping the eggs exceptionally well-preserved.

“It is interesting, that whilst ostrich eggs are not uncommon in excavations, the bones of the large bird are not found. This may indicate that in the ancient world, people avoided tackling the ostrich and were content with collecting their eggs,” said Amir Gorzalczany, senior research archaeologist from IAA, in the release.

Twenty-year-old is fifth Palestinian martyred by Israeli troops

Troops
  • Israeli forces shot a Palestinian fighter in the West Bank.
  • He succumbed to critical wounds after being shot in the head by the occupation this morning.
  • He was initially transferred to Nablus’s Rafidia hospital.

Nablus: on Wednesday, when the army reported coming under fire during an operation, Israeli troops shot a Palestinian fighter in the West Bank who subsequently succumbed to his injuries, according to the Palestinian health ministry.

The Al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigade, the armed branch of Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas’ Fatah faction, identified the deceased as a member.

“Ahmed Amer Salim Abu Junaid, 21, succumbed to critical wounds after being shot in the head by the occupation this morning in Balata refugee camp in Nablus,” the health ministry said in a statement.

Clashes erupted early on Wednesday when troops entered the camp, the army said.

“Several individuals fired at (Israeli) soldiers, who retaliated with live fire,” according to the statement, implying that one person was hit.

He was initially transferred to Nablus’s Rafidia hospital before succumbing to his wounds several hours later.

In a statement, the Al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigade stated it “mourns its martyr” after Abu Junaid was murdered in a “confrontation with the Zionist enemy army.”

The official Palestinian news agency reported that undercover Israeli forces had “infiltrated the camp and surrounded a house”. It added that Israeli troops fired “live bullets, stun grenades, and tear gas”.

During another raid in Nablus last week, Israeli forces killed 16-year-old Amer Abu Zeitoun. Both the militants and the Israeli military claimed that armed battles had broken out.

More than 150 Palestinians were killed in the West Bank last year, making it the deadliest year there since records at the international organization began in 2005.

  • UN Security Council to consider Israeli minister’s contentious visit to Al-Aqsa mosque.
  • Itamar Ben-Gvir is Israel’s new national security minister.
  • The 15-member Council will meet at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

The UN Security Council will consider an Israeli minister’s contentious visit to Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa mosque. The 15-member Council will meet at 3 p.m. at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

“The international community decides the fate of safeguarding Jerusalem’s Islamic and Christian landmarks,” the Palestinian UN ambassador stated.

“We won’t be pleased by tomorrow’s Security Council pronouncements. We expect concrete results “Adding,

Itamar Ben-Gvir, Israel’s new national security minister, will visit Egypt on Tuesday.

Al-Aqsa mosque in Israeli-annexed east Jerusalem is Islam’s third-holiest place. It’s called Temple Mount by Jews.

Non-Muslims can visit the place, but they can’t pray there.

In recent years, more Jews, mostly Israeli nationalists, have discreetly prayed at the area, which Palestinians decry. Such efforts threaten Jerusalem’s holy sites, say Western governments.

The US, a longtime supporter of Israel, condemned Ben-visit. Gvir’s Jordan’s UN ambassador Mahmoud Daifallah Hmoud called it an act of extremism meant to incite bloodshed.

“The Security Council must take its role seriously and stop this,” he said.

UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said Wednesday that Antonio Guterres “urge on all to desist from escalating tensions in and around Jerusalem.”

The UN Security Council has issued multiple resolutions on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and favors a two-state solution.
