Pakistan, Turkiye agree to strengthen economic cooperation

NEW YORK: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan wherein two sides agreed to further strengthen mutually beneficial cooperation in trade, investment, defence, and security domains.

In the meeting held on the sidelines of the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly here, the two leaders discussed bilateral matters, regional and global developments.

They assessed preparations for the upcoming 7th session of Pakistan-Turkiye High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council (HLSCC) to be held in Islamabad in the near future.

The two leaders also discussed regional and global developments, especially the ongoing genocide and the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza. They called for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza and end of hostilities.

Prime Minister Shehbaz appreciated Turkiye’s firm and consistent support for the oppressed people of the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).

President Erdogan expressed his admiration for Prime Minister Shehbaz’s economic policies, which had played a crucial role in stabilizing Pakistan’s economy and commended his leadership and commitment to economic reforms.

Furthermore, he also extended his heartfelt birthday wishes to the prime minister who celebrated his 73rd Birthday this week.

Prime Minister Shehbaz congratulated President Erdogan on his passionate address to the 79th session of the UN General Assembly that centred on the Palestinian crisis.

“The way the Turkish president highlighted the issue touched the hearts of all those listening to him in the Assembly hall,” he told reporters after the meeting.

In his emotional address, Erdogan said that the values of the United Nations’ system and the Western world were dying in Gaza as the conflict continued there, calling for an “alliance of humanity” to stop Israel’s aggression.

The Turkish leader strongly criticized Israel over its military campaign in the Gaza Strip and on the Western countries for their support to Israel.

Model statutes must be implemented at all KU Centers

KARACHI:  “The appointment of a new Director in ICCBS, University of Karachi, should be done under the Act Code of the University of Karachi.

The higher authorities must take notice of the unwanted interference of the former Directors and donors into the administrative affairs of Karachi University.

The university’s Vice Chancellor must call a meeting of the KU Senate to ensure the implementation of model statutes at all university centers.”

These views were expressed by the University Syndicate Member Dr Riaz Ahmed, Senate Member Prof Dr Firdous Imran, Faisal Hashmi, Iftikhar Ahmed and others in the meeting held at the Staff Club on Wednesday.

Many teachers, officers, and employees of the ICCBS participated in this meeting. Dr Riaz Ahmad criticized the unnecessary interference of retired professors and capitalists in the administrative affairs of the university and said that this interference is damaging the educational and research activities of the research center while the faculty, staff, and students are suffering from severe mental distress.

He said that teachers, officers, and employees can bring their long-standing problems to the authorities through peaceful protest.

Prof Firdous Imran said that there is a need for a regular social media campaign against the illegal interference of influential people in ICCBS.

Dr Faiz Muhammad said that a uniform policy should be established for all the centers of Karachi University.

Faisal Hashmi paid tribute to those who raised their voices against the lawlessness in ICCBS and announced the full support of the Officers Welfare Association.

Iftikhar Ahmed said that the Employees Welfare Association earlier was with the oppressed people and it is still with the oppressed.

IHC bars SZABMU from announcing MDCAT results

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has stopped Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Medical University (SZABMU) from announcing Medical and Dental College Admission Test (MDCAT) results.

Islamabad High Court Justice Arbab Muhammad Tahir issued a 3-page order and said in the judgment that SZABMU should not release the results of MDCAT test.

Students who appeared for the MDCAT for medical admissions have filed a petition for re-conducting MDCAT exam.

The court has issued notices to the Federal Ministry of Health and other parties for September 26. The order said that the court was told today that as the university has not yet declared the results, the Additional Attorney General should immediately inform the university about the stay order.

The students appearing for the MDCAT exam had approached the Islamabad High Court, stating that the papers of other provinces were very easy, so there were a large number of students scoring more than 190 marks, but our paper was  out of syllabus. , which made a huge difference to the result.

A student said there were more than 20 questions in the paper which were out of syllabus, not only that, but when he came home and checked the questions he had corrected. His ‘key’ was also given wrongly.

The students said that when their parents went to the SZABMU and when the matter was raised there, the vice chancellor left from the back door and also called the police. What happened, the registrar was laughing while standing there.

Court reserves verdict on Toshakhana case against Zardari, Nawaz

ISLAMABAD: An Accountability Court in Islamabad has reserved its verdict of in Toshakhana reference against President Asif Ali Zardari, former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Senate Chairman Yusuf Raza Gilani back to the National Accountablity Bureau (NAB).

Accountability Court Judge Abida Sajjad heard the petition to send the Toshakhana reference back to NAB against Asif Ali Zardari, Nawaz Sharif and others.

President Asif Ali Zardari’s lawyer Farooq H. Naek and Nawaz Sharif’s lawyer Kazi Misbah and Rana Irfan appeared in the accountability court.

Lawyer Farooq H. Naik said that there are 5 accused in the reference, after NAB amendments, this case is not the jurisdiction of this court and this case should be sent back to Chairman NAB.

The judge of the accountability court said that the parties agree on the point that the reference is not the jurisdiction of this court. On which lawyer Farooq H. Naik said that Asif Ali Zardari had previously also took immunity when he became the president, but when he stepped down from the presidency, he again appeared before the NAB.

The accountability court should send the reference back, to whom the NAB authority sends the case, now the question will be whether the case will be made against Asif Zardari or not.

Nawaz Sharif’s lawyer Qazi Misbah said that earlier when the court decided, the case was sent back to NAB, in the light of former Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial’s decision, the case sent back to the accountability court.

The lawyers of Nawaz Sharif, Asif Ali Zardari and Yousaf Raza Gilani requested to send the Toshakhana reference to NAB, while the NAB prosecutor said that Asif Ali Zardari had given a check which bounced.

The NAB prosecutor said that Nawaz Sharif’s case will be separated and Asif Ali Zardari’s case will be separated.

After hearing the arguments of the parties, the Accountability Court reserved its decision on the applications related to sending the Toshakhana reference back to NAB against Asif Zardari, Nawaz Sharif and others.

KP Govt forms committee to probe Swat blast on police mobile

PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has set up a high-level investigation committee to find out the facts of the bomb blast incident near a police mobile on Malam Jabba Road in Swat on September 22.

The committee comprising of Special Secretary Zubair Khan and Additional Inspector General Alam Shinwari, would submit its report regarding the blast within seven days to the Home department.

It is pertinent to mention here that a policeman embraced martyrdom in the blast while three others sustained critical injuries.

The police van was leading a convoy of ambassadors of more than 10 countries to Malam Jabba.

All the dignitaries remained unhurt in the blast and were safely taken back to Islamabad soon after the blast.

FBR decides to abolish non-filers category

ISLAMABAD: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has decided to abolish the category of non-filers in Pakistan and planning to impose 15 restrictions on non-taxpayers.

The FBR will impose 5 restrictions initially, including property, vehicles, international travel and electricity while there are restrictions on account opening and investment in mutual funds.

FBR announced to introduce several restrictions targeting non-filers to enhance tax compliance and broaden the tax base, the non-filer category will be abolished.

Initial restrictions include buying property, buying vehicles, investing in mutual funds, opening current accounts and international travel (except for religious travel).

The government is doing away with the non-filer category which means that individuals who previously paid a small fee to avoid paying tax on these transactions will no longer be able to do so.

FBR Chairman Rashid Mahmood Langrial revealed that 15 specific activities will be banned for tax return defaulters, focusing initially on 5 key areas. RK is part of the transformation plan, which has been approved by the Prime Minister.

The move will be implemented through an ordinance, and the FBR is already working on its rules and involving the law ministry in the process.

Earlier, the Senior Vice President of PTI Central Punjab submitted a request to the Deputy Commissioner  Lahore for a rally at Minar e Pakistan, but now Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf has submitted a new request to the Lahore High Court for a gathering in Lahore.

PTI leader Akmal Khan Bari has filed a petition in the Lahore High Court in which Punjab government and Deputy Commissioner Lahore have been made parties.

It has been argued in the petition that October 5 is the birthday of former prime minister and PTI founder Imran Khan, so the rally should be allowed to hold public gathering at Minar e Pakistan.

In the request, it is assured that the participants of the meeting will fully follow the legal regulations.
