President, PM strongly condemns blasts in Pishin, Qila Saifullah

SLAMABAD: President Dr Arif Alvi and Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar strongly condemned the blasts that took place in Khanozai and Qila Saifullah areas of Balochistan’s Pishin district.

The president, in a condemnation message, expressed deep grief and sorrow over the loss of precious lives in the blasts.

He sympathized with family members of those martyred in the blasts and prayed to Allah Almighty for the peace and elevation of the ranks of the departed souls.

On the other hand, Caretaker Interior Minister Dr. Gohar Ijaz strongly condemned the explosions outside an independent Candidate’s office  in Pashin and office of Jamiat Ulema Islam-F in Qila Saifullah.

He expressed deep sorrow and regret over the loss of precious lives in the two blasts and prayed for martyrs.

In his condolence message, the minister said that the miscreants wanted to defame Pakistan by creating unrest during elections however those who played with the lives of innocent citizens would be dealt with iron hands.

He said that all possible measures would be taken to maintain peace and law and order during the elections.

The minister said that his government shared the grief of the families of the martyrs.

12 killed in blast outside JUI-F candidate’s office in Qilla Saifullah

Quetta: At least 12 people were killed and many others were injured in blast occurred near the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam(JUI-F) Office in Qila Saifullah , Balochistan.

An explosion took place near the election office of JUI candidate Maulana Abdul Wasey in Qila Saifullah area of ​​Balochistan.

12 people died in the blast and several people were injured. The dead bodies and injured  shifted to the hospital. A large number of workers were present in the office at the time of the blast.

The condition of several injured in the Qila Saifullah explosion is critical, due to which more casualties are being feared.

Police said that JUI candidate from PB-3 Maulana Abdul Wasey was not present in the office.

After the blast, law enforcement agencies have cordoned off the area.

IHC restrains caretaker government from restructuring of FBR

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court(IHC) restrained the caretaker government from restructuring the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR).

Islamabad High Court Justice Miangul Hasan Aurangzeb heard the petition of the FBR officer in which the petitioner took the position that the restructuring of the FBR is not the mandate of the caretaker government. The caretaker government should be prevented from restructuring the FBR.

The petitioner’s lawyer said that the committee was formed despite the Election Commission of Pakistan(ECP) stopping it under the Election Act 2017.

After hearing the arguments of the counsel, the court suspended the notification of setting up the restructuring committee of FBR.

Govt stood by commitment for holding polls on Feb 8: Solangi

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Information, Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs Murtaza Solangi said that the caretaker government had stood by its commitment of holding general elections on the schedule given by Election Commission of Pakistan ( ECP).

Addressing the inaugural ceremony of Media Coordination and Facilitation Center established by Press Information Department here, he said tomorrow morning the voting would start and by midday half of the polling would have been done.

Referring to speculations, he said there were doubts and concerns in people’s minds regarding the elections.

“We stood by the promise of holding polls and elections are being held (tomorrow), putting aside all fears and rumours,” Murtaza Solangi maintained. The minister said that the caretaker government had taken all possible steps for ensuring the conduct of free and transparent elections.

He said after oath-taking of caretaker government on August 17 last year, in his first press briefing here the very next day , the first question he was asked about the elections and his answer was that elections would be held on the timeframe given by the ECP.

Murtaza Solangi said that this country was established under constitutional democracy and constitutional federal parliamentary system was the foundation of its political system.

He said he as spokesperson of the government had reiterated time and again that elections would be held on the time given by ECP. “When the date of February 8 was given, our consistent answer was that the polling stations will open at 8.00 am on Thursday February 8”, he added.

The minister said that announcement of unofficial results would start tomorrow evening and , the official results will be released by the ECP within three days time period.

He said there were many challenges and problems in holding elections but the government was not discouraged by anything.

The minister said that Ministry of Information and Broadcasting facilitated the media and provided authentic and verified news to the public through the relevant institutions.

ISLAMABAD: Foreign Office Spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch said that Pakistan was fully committed to foster an inclusive democratic process and uphold the rule of law.

The spokesperson’s remarks came in response to the media queries on the statement by UN Human Rights High Commissioner Volker Türk who had urged authorities in Pakistan to ensure that parliamentary elections this week were free and fair.

He also appealed to ensure a fully free and fair vote and to recommit to the democratic process and an environment that promotes and protects human rights.

“Pakistan is fully committed to fostering an inclusive democratic process, upholding the rule of law and protect human rights and fundamental freedoms guaranteed in its laws and Constitution,” the spokesperson remarked.

She said the security plans have been finalized to hold the elections on February 8, 2024, as per the electoral laws of Pakistan.

The spokesperson said that Pakistan’s judicial system provided for fair trial and due process. Domestic legal remedies are available in case of any complaints in the electoral process, she added.
