PM congratulates Sister Zeph for winning Global Teacher Prize

ISLAMABAD: Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar congratulated Pakistani teacher Sister Zeph on winning Global Teacher Prize 2023, calling it a great moment of pride for Pakistan.

“A great moment of pride for Pakistan. Our very own Sister Zeph has won the Global Teacher Prize 2023,” the prime minister wrote on the social media platform X.

He said education was a subject really close to his heart as only education could uplift the people to achieve laurels for themselves and their country, besides making them better citizens.

“I once again congratulate Sister Zeph on this remarkable achievement,” he remarked.

Sister Zeph founded her own school for underprivileged children in the courtyard of her home at just 13, while studying at night for her own education.

She was lauded as “a true change-maker and advocate for women’s rights and children’s education”.

The award is organised in collaboration with United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and in strategic partnership with Dubai Cares, a United Arab Emirates-based global philanthropic organisation.

IMF agreed on proposal to spend 1% of GDP annually on climate change

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has shared a plan to obtain energy from alternative sources with International Monetary Fund (IMF).

According to the sources, the officials of the Climate Change and Planning Commission discussed the National Clean Air Policy with the IMF mission.

Sources say that a plan to get 60 percent of energy from alternative sources by 2030 was shared with the IMF mission, in addition to plans to ban 30 percent of electric vehicles and imported coal by 2030.

Sources said that the proposal to spend one percent of GDP annually on climate change was agreed to by the IMF mission.

According to the sources, the IMF mission was briefed on the Green Energy Mix, Billion Tree Tsunami Project under the Clean Air Policy and it was told that the burning of crop residues is banned to control environmental pollution and under the National Clean Air Policy, Euro 5, Euro 6 transport technology policy is being implemented.

Sources said that in the briefing on increasing credit and other financing options for clean air policy between the federation and the provinces, it was said that preparations are being made for the upcoming Conference of Parties (COP 28) held in the United Arab Emirates.

Early warning system measures under the National Adaptation Plan were also discussed.

RIYADH: Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar arrived in Saudi Arabia’s capital Riyadh to represent Pakistan at the emergency meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on the volatile situation in Gaza.

Deputy Governor Riyadh, Prince Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Abdulaziz received the prime minister on his arrival at the King Khalid International Airport. Pakistan’s ambassdor Ahmed Farooq and senior Saudi and Pakistani officials were present on the occasion.

During his three-day official visit, the prime minister will participate in the emergency meeting being held in Riyadh, which will discuss the Israeli aggression on Gaza.

He will also hold sideline meetings with the visiting heads of state and government from other countries.

Saudi Arabia has convened the extraordinary summit of the OIC to discuss the escalating situation in Gaza.

ISLAMABAD: Electricity is likely to be expensive across the country, including Karachi, in view of the first quarter adjustment of the current financial year.

DISCOs have requested to transfer additional load of Rs 22.56 billion to consumers. The July-September adjustment will also be applicable to K-Electric consumers.

National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has issued a revision notice for the first quarter adjustment of the current financial year, which states that the adjustment tariff for July to September will be kept uniform as per the government guidelines.

As per NEPRA notification, application for quarterly adjustment for July to September 2023 has been filed in NEPRA. NEPRA will hear the first quarter adjustment application on November 14.

Electricity distribution companies have sought permission to collect Rs 12.126 billion in terms of capacity charges while a request has been made to collect Rs 10.247 billion under use of system charges.

It has also been requested to receive Rs 4.680 billion for operation and maintenance and Rs 6.670 billion  for damages.
