IHC reserves verdict on bail plea of Qureshi

  • Shah Mahmood’s lawyer Ali Bukhari appeared in court.
  • Prosecutor Raja Rizwan objected to Qureshi’s bail petition.
  • Court subsequently reserved its verdict after hearing two side.

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC)  reserved its judgement petitions of PTI’s vice chairman Shah Mehmood Qureshi against his indictment and seeking his post-arrest bail in a cipher case.

Prosecutor Raja Rizwan Abbasi and Shah Mahmood’s lawyer Ali Bukhari appeared in the court.

Prosecutor Raja Rizwan objected to Shah Mahmood’s bail petition and said that it was essential for the petitioner to submit the certificate as per the judgment of the top court.

On this, Justice Amir Farooq rejected the objection of the prosecution and asked the FIA to give arguments in the case.

During the hearing, Shah Mahmood’s lawyer said that the trial court had rejected his client’s bail and this is the first petition for bail in the High Court after the trial court rejected the bail. He said, “We attached a photocopy of the document as the original copy was not provided to us”.

Special Prosecutor Raja Rizwan Abbasi argued that the trial court had indicted the accused on October 23, after completing legal requirements. The copies of the case record had also been shared with the defense, he said.

He prayed the court to dismiss the bail petition of the accused.

  • Maqbool Baqar directed Secretary Health to improve inspection system

KARACHI: Caretaker Sindh Chief Minister Justice (R ) Maqbool Baqar has expressed his displeasure on the poor functioning of most of the government hospitals/health facilities where neither the attendance of the staff members has been ensured nor the labs and operation theatres were working properly.

“During my visits to government hospitals right from Karachi to Sehwan and up to Sukkur found them a total mess where male and female patients were kept without segregation into the Emergency Wards and most of the staff members were absent when checked the attendance registers,” he said and added the patients were receiving medicines from the hospitals’ pharmacies.

Justice Baqar said that the provincial government has allocated a handsome amount of Rs234.29 billion for the Health depart for the year 2023-24, out of which Rs53.17 billion has been earmarked for operational expenditures. “Are we using the budget in the public interest properly by repairing and maintaining the equipment,” he questioned and deplored that the ambulances were not working, the operation theatres had been neglected, medicines were not given to the patients and the patients were being referred to private Labs instead of conducting their tests indoor,” he said.

Women involvement in decision making key for prosperity: President

President
  • He said while addressing Convocation of International Islamic University.
  • He said investment on women went to waste when they sat at home.
  • Dr Alvi advised students to always remain humble and act as knowledge-seeker.

ISLAMABAD: President Dr Arif Alvi emphasizing the women’s active participation in all sectors, said one of the reasons behind Pakistan lacking prosperity was the non-involvement of women in decision making as well as the economic corridors of power.

The president, addressing the 12th Convocation of International Islamic University Islamabad, said the nation’s investment on the women education went to waste when they sat at home without going into the practical life.

“Education is investment of this poor nation on you. If you will sit at home, this will be the loss of the nation.

I want you not to give up its practical application. (However), this is the duty of the government and the nation to provide you a harassment-free working environment,” the president remarked.

He also called for job structures for the women which should also facilitate them keeping in view the family-related engagements of the women.

Citing the example of Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)’s wife Hazrat Khadija, also a working business woman, the president said Islam encouraged the women to work as it was not possible to leave half of the country’s population unutilised.

He, who earlier awarded PhD degrees to 138 and gold medals to 71 students, congratulated the students, their parents as well as the university and teachers for their hard work.

He was appreciative that girl students consisted of over half of the total 34,000 strength of the university.

He advised the new graduates to welcome the knowledge without any religious biases or selection, and always remain humble and act as a knowledge-seeker.

Expressing his worries about the unbridled human mentality as being practised in Gaza, the president said Muslims derived their laws from Holy Quran and the teachings of the Holy Prophet (PBUH).

Calling the new graduates “elite” going into decision-making, President Alvi said it was their responsibility to uplift the poor and change the society.

Lamenting the Muslims’ hesitation and misinterpretation of the scientific inventions in the past, he said the second renaissance of Muslims was not possible without keeping the doors to knowledge open.

The IIUI Pro-Chancellor Dr Ahmed Salem Muhammad Al-Ameri congratulated the new graduates and said by obtaining degrees, they were stepping into their practical lives.
