ECC approves early start of Reko Diq project

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar presided over the meeting of the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet, virtually through Zoom on Sunday.

The ECC considered and approved two important agenda items related to Reko Diq project, thus paving the way for early start of the Reko Diq Project.

Ministry of Energy (Petroleum Division) submitted a summary on accrued interest with respect to the amount held in an escrow account in connection with the Reko Diq Project dispute settlement. It was presented that government of Pakistan (GoP) and Provincial Government of Baluchistan (GoB) entered into an out-of-court dispute settlement with M/s Tethyan Copper Company Pvt Limited- a consortium of Barrick Gold Corporation of Canada and M/s Antofagasta PLC of Chile, in respect of Reko Diq Copper-Gold Project in Chaghai district of Baluchistan.

As per settlement terms, Government of Pakistan has to clear liabilities to Antofagasta PLC. In the light of the terms of agreed settlement, the ECC allowed Finance Division to direct GHPL (for its own as well as GoB’s share), OGDCL and PPL to deposit the aggregate amount of interest to the sum of US$ 22,718,173/- in the escrow account from March 31, 2022 to December 15, 2022. The ECC further allowed Finance Division to arrange the interest payable for GoB’s share amounting to US$ 8,519,314 /- from the loan of Rs. 65 billion already raised by the GHPL with the GoP guarantee.

Further, the ECC allowed the concerned Divisions of GoP and the SOEs to act in such a manner to ensure that the deposited amount alongwith interest deposited by the SOEs in the escrow account to form part of the consideration for share purchase of Reko Diq Mining Company Limited.

RAWALPINDI: The 51st martyrdom anniversary of Flight Lieutenant Saeed Afzal Khan Shaheed, Sitar-i-Jurrat, is being observed on Sunday.

On December 4, 1971, Flight Lieutenant Saeed Afzal Khan was flying in a formation of two F-86 aircrafts, when he engaged four Indian Hunters and immediately shot one down.

Meanwhile, another formation of four Hunters joined the aerial battle in the subsequent combat, although facing great odds, he was not deterred from attacking them.

While being heavily outnumbered by superior performance aircraft, he continued the fight but was later shot down by a Hunter.

For his courage, determination and devotion to duty, he was awarded the Sitara-i-Juraat.

LAHORE: Former prime minister and Chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan on Sunday said that Suleman Shehbaz is responsible for billions of corruption and money laundering.

In his Twitter message, the former prime minister said Imran Khan said “If one wants to understand why the economy is destroyed, then the answer lies in only two incidents.”

The former prime minister said that 75-year-old Senator Azam Swati was subjected to torture in custody, he was beaten in front of his grandchildren.

He said that the house was ransacked and sealed, dragged from there. He said false FIRs have registered against Azam Swati, a complete violation of the Constitution and fundamental human rights.

Chairman PTI said that on the contrary, a fugitive Suleman Shehbaz came back dry-cleaned. He said Suleiman Shehbaz is responsible for billions of corruption and money laundering.

Imran Khan further said that the Prophet (PBUH) had warned how injustice destroys nations, and everyone should remember the hadith of the Prophet ﷺ.

ISLAMABAD: Former federal minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Fawad Chaudhry has announced that PTI will dissolve Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa(KP) assemblies by December 20 if PDM does not come up with a final formula to hold general elections.

In his Twitter message, former federal minister Fawad Chaudhry said that the current rulers are not capable of running the country. He said the elites of the imported government do not want elections, but they have no idea how to run the country.

The former federal minister said that running the country is a complex and difficult task that the current rulers cannot do.

He says that Pakistan needs political stability and this is not possible without a stable government.

The PTI leader said that the Punjab and KP assemblies will be dissolved if PTM does not come up with a final formula for the general elections across the country by December 20.
