MPs and Lords’ IT devices go missing

  • MPs and Lords have lost dozens of electronic gadgets this year.
  • The list contains 27 pieces of parliamentary-supplied equipment.
  • They might be lost or stolen.

New data shows MPs and Lords have lost dozens of electronic gadgets this year.

The list contains 27 pieces of parliamentary-supplied equipment lost or stolen by MPs.

iPads, phones, and computers went stolen amid concerns over Westminster’s data handling.

Cyber security experts said the loss of devices storing ‘huge amounts of sensitive data’ allows hostile actors, such as foreign states and criminal gangs, a ‘window of opportunity.’

Only two devices were recorded as found; the others had no information. Two laptops, two iPads, and a desktop disappeared in the Lords.

Two disappearances were designated ‘lost’ and three ‘lost/stolen’ in Metro.co.uk’s Freedom of Information Act requests.

Marijus Briedis, a cybersecurity expert at NordVPN, said it’s necessary to protect login credentials and hardware.

Having a lost or stolen smartphone makes it easier for hackers to take the information.

The level of know-how necessary makes this a rare situation, and the payout must be worth the hacker’s time.

Those having valuable documents, data, or commercially sensitive information on their gadgets are ideal targets for organized crime.

State-sponsored and commercial espionage has traditionally targeted industry captains and senior politicians.

The more valuable your phone and hard drive data, the more encryption you’ll require. Many in government will have expensive software on their devices designed to prevent spyware only governments can purchase, such as an Israeli system called Pegasus, but losing the device altogether won’t necessarily safeguard you.

Nine cellular iPads were lost in the Commons.

In one example, an MP’s laptop and iPad went lost.

Under the Act’s data protection exception, the names of the legislators who reported the losses were hidden.

The heavily censored data for the year to November was disclosed despite ministers’ concerns about cyber-security, especially in light of threats from unfriendly powers.

Oliver Pinson-Roxburgh, CEO of cyber-security firm Defense.com, stated, ‘This story shows why security only works if everyone does their role.’ One weak connection can undermine the best tech, financing, and goals.

‘Parliament must reassess its security approach.

Parliament must create a secure workplace that empowers and protects its employees.

Even with the newest security patches, new exploits and vulnerabilities are discovered constantly, so stolen or lost devices are never safe.

Bad actors can overcome a device’s security and access key papers, platforms, and information if they have physical possession.

Mr. Pinson-Roxburgh said vigilance was needed when sensitive public information was at stake.

Those in power and responsibility who have access to sensitive data must take their obligations seriously. saying This is true of government officials with access to personal data. Security isn’t a theoretical or administrative issue; ignoring it can have terrible implications.

While there are techniques to safeguard stolen devices, there is no excuse to ignore appropriate security standards.

From an Infosecurity standpoint, you can’t assume that every lost gadget will end up in the hands of foreign agents or cybercrime gangs, especially when dealing with high-level government positions.

As foreign secretary, Liz Truss’ phone was hacked by Russians in October. The breach reportedly occurred during the Conservative leadership contest but wasn’t disclosed until thereafter.

According to the Mail on Sunday, Russian agents hacked the system.

The government has refused to comment on the case but said it has “strong cyber threat protection mechanisms.”

Suella Braverman acknowledged forwarding government emails to her personal account. After the scandal broke, then-prime minister Truss ordered her to resign. Six days later, Rishi Sunak reappointed her.

Ms. Braverman confessed to transmitting official government papers to her personal email address six times.

The items may have been stolen anywhere on the parliamentary estate or elsewhere, and citizens must report instances to the Parliamentary Digital Service (PDS).

The Commons stated it’s impossible to document how reliably this is done, especially for smaller or less valuable things.

In 2021, lawmakers’ hardware went disappeared from cabs, airports, and streets, with one iPad abandoned on a plane.

Commons and Lords stated they couldn’t retrieve as much information this year because the PDS altered how it maintains data.

A UK parliament representative said, ‘We advise users, including members of both Houses, on how to manage their equipment safety, but we do not comment on particular aspects of our cyber or physical security controls, policies, or incidents.’
