- Ecuador are expected to keep their place at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
- Byron Castillo has been cleared to play for Ecuador after Fifa denied Chile and Peru’s appeal.
- The right-back was born in Colombia but registered as Ecuadorian using a fraudulent birth certificate.
Due to Fifa’s denial of Byron Castillo’s claim of ineligibility, Ecuador is expected to keep their spot at this year’s World Cup in Qatar.
The right-back was judged qualified by Fifa in June, but the football associations of Chile and Peru filed appeals.
According to the Fifa appeals committee, Castillo is now eligible to play for Ecuador.
According to a Fifa statement, “the footballer was to be deemed as holding permanent Ecuadorian nationality” based on the documentation provided.
Castillo represented Ecuador in eight World Cup qualifying matches, but the Football Federation of Chile (FFC) alleges the 23-year-old registered as an Ecuadorian using a fraudulent birth certificate.
Castillo, according to the FFC, was born in Colombia in 1995 as opposed to General Villamil Playas, Ecuador, in 1998.
“The present judgement remains subject to an appeal before the Court of Arbitration for Sport,” Fifa stated on Friday.
On November 20, Ecuador is scheduled to play 2022 World Cup hosts Qatar in the tournament’s opening game.
