Southern Ecuador: 12 people killed in earthquake

earthquake
  • The earthquake struck at 12:00 local time.
  • At least 12 people died.
  • There have also been reports of earthquakes being felt in other places.

A massive earthquake slammed Ecuador‘s southern coast, killing at least 12 people.

Structures in various cities have been damaged as a result of the 6.7 magnitude earthquake, which struck at 12:00 local time (17:00 GMT).

The southern region of El Oro was the most hit, with emergency services reporting that individuals are still trapped inside collapsed houses.

Eleven people were killed in El Oro and one in Azuay province, according to police.

Buildings and vehicles were damaged in Machala and Cuenca as emergency personnel hurried to assist residents.

The epicenter was near Balao, about 50 miles (80 kilometers) from Guayaquil, Ecuador’s second-largest city, which has a population of about three million people.

“I went out into the street because I saw people starting to run in panic, getting out of their cars,” Magaly Escandon, a business owner in Cuenca, told the AFP news agency.

President Guillermo Lasso asked Ecuadoreans to remain calm as officials assess the damage.

“Emergency teams are mobilizing to offer all their support to those who have been affected,” he said.

Mr. Lasso’s office also verified that injured people were being treated in hospitals, but provided no other information.

Many roads have been closed due to landslides, and some homes, educational institutions, and healthcare facilities have been destroyed, according to authorities.

One person was killed when a wall collapsed over their automobile in Cuenca, while three individuals were killed when a security camera tower collapsed on Jambel Island.

There have also been reports of earthquakes being felt in other places, including Manabi, Manta, and Quito.

This is the largest quake to hit Ecuador since 2016 when almost 700 people perished and hundreds were injured.

According to Peruvian officials, the quake was felt in the country’s northern areas, but there were no early reports of injuries or damage.

Ecuador upholds world cup place after player ruling

Ecuador upholds world cup place after player ruling
  • Ecuador are expected to keep their place at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
  • Byron Castillo has been cleared to play for Ecuador after Fifa denied Chile and Peru’s appeal.
  • The right-back was born in Colombia but registered as Ecuadorian using a fraudulent birth certificate.

Due to Fifa’s denial of Byron Castillo’s claim of ineligibility, Ecuador is expected to keep their spot at this year’s World Cup in Qatar.

The right-back was judged qualified by Fifa in June, but the football associations of Chile and Peru filed appeals.

According to the Fifa appeals committee, Castillo is now eligible to play for Ecuador.

According to a Fifa statement, “the footballer was to be deemed as holding permanent Ecuadorian nationality” based on the documentation provided.

Castillo represented Ecuador in eight World Cup qualifying matches, but the Football Federation of Chile (FFC) alleges the 23-year-old registered as an Ecuadorian using a fraudulent birth certificate.

Castillo, according to the FFC, was born in Colombia in 1995 as opposed to General Villamil Playas, Ecuador, in 1998.

“The present judgement remains subject to an appeal before the Court of Arbitration for Sport,” Fifa stated on Friday.

On November 20, Ecuador is scheduled to play 2022 World Cup hosts Qatar in the tournament’s opening game.

Ecuador
  • Thousands of Indigenous protesters left Quito after leaders signed an agreement with the government to end 18 days of cost-of-living demonstrations.
  • Fast-rising fuel prices were the catalyst for the protests called by the powerful Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities (Conaie).
  • Five civilians and a soldier died in the protests that started on June 13, and hundreds were injured on both sides.

The government in Ecuador reduced fuel prices on Friday as part of a deal that ended more than two weeks of disruptive protests that had paralyzed the country.

Thousands of Indigenous protesters left Quito on Thursday evening after their leaders signed an agreement with the government to end 18 days of cost-of-living demonstrations.

Following mediation by the Catholic Church, the government agreed to drop fuel prices by 15 cents. On Friday, a gallon of gasoline dropped from $2.55 to $2.40 and diesel fell from $1.90 to $1.75.

Fast-rising fuel prices were the catalyst for the protests called by the powerful Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities (Conaie) and marked by burning roadblocks and sometimes violent clashes with the security forces.

At least 49 inmates die in Colombia prison riot and fire

Colombia prison riot
  • Inmates set fire to try to prevent police from entering their enclosure at the prison in Tulua.
  • Colombia’s prison system has a capacity of 97,000 inmates but is overcrowded by 16,000 people.
  • Since 2021, nearly 400 prisoners have been killed in six riots in Ecuador.

At least 49 inmates were killed and dozens more were injured early Tuesday after a fire broke out during a prison riot in southwestern Colombia, according to the national prisons agency.

According to Tito Castellanos, director of the National Penitentiary and Prison Institute, the tragedy occurred when rioting inmates set fire to try to prevent police from entering their enclosure at the prison in the city of Tulua (INPEC).

“Unfortunately there was a riot in the pavilion number eight of the Tulua prison, where there are 1,267 prisoners, with the unfortunate result that 49 people died,” Castellanos told La W Radio.

He said another 30 people were “injured and affected by the blaze and the smoke.”

Castellanos said authorities were investigating whether prisoners had lit their mattresses as part of an “escape attempt” or whether the riot was provoked “to cover some other situation.”

He made no mention of whether any prisoners actually escaped.

A spokesperson for INPEC earlier told AFP that the death toll “may change.”
