Novak Djokovic, the 21-time Grand Slam winner, wrote a touching farewell letter to Roger Federer, who announced his retirement from competitive tennis on Thursday, September 15.
The 20-time Grand Slam champion was mentioned by Djokovic along with the examples he established for the rest of the tennis community during his illustrious 24-year career.
On Friday, September 16, Djokovic posted a farewell message for Federer, one of his greatest adversaries, on social media.
“Roger it’s hard to see this day and put into words all that we’ve shared in this sport together. Over a decade of incredible moments and battles to think back on. Your career has set the tone for what it means to achieve excellence and lead with integrity and poise.”
“It’s an honor to know you on and off court, and for many more years to come,” Djokovic stated in a post on Instagram.
Federer’s supporters may anticipate big things in the future, according to Djokovic, who also wished the Swiss great luck for the future.
Notably, Federer had stated in his statement of retirement that he would still be involved with tennis but would no longer compete in Grand Slam events and the tour.
Following his participation in the Laver Cup, which begins on November 23 in London, Federer will retire from tennis.
In the team competition, Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal, and both Federer and Djokovic will represent Team Europe.

At Wimbledon 2019, Federer famously competed in his 31st Grand Slam final against Novak Djokovic.
The Serb denied the Swiss his ninth Wimbledon title after defeating him in a marathon five-set match.
Federer and Djokovic had a fierce rivalry as they faced off 50 times throughout their career on the tour, with 27 victories each for the Serb.
Nadal, Federer’s “friend and opponent,” also wrote a moving homage to the 20-time Grand Slam victor, expressing his sadness and those of millions of tennis fans worldwide.
