Mostly good earnings lift US stocks to 3rd straight gain

US stocks
  • The S&P 500 finished at 4,130.29, up 1.4 percent for the day.
  • The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 1.0 percent to 32,845.13.
  • The tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index jumped 1.9 percent.

Wall Street stocks finished a strong week on a positive note Friday, extending its rally to three days behind strong gains from Amazon, ExxonMobil and other giants following earnings results.

Investors shrugged off the latest indicator of persistent inflation, as Commerce Department data showed the personal consumption expenditures price index jumped 1.0 percent in June compared to May, outpacing personal income gains, which rose just 0.6 percent.

But stocks continued to push higher, rising again after the Federal Reserve’s second straight 75 basis point increase and negative GDP data suggesting a heightened risk of a US recession.

“The Fed has a clear path to continue with aggressive hikes, but many are still thinking they’ll be inclined to go at only a half point in September,” said Oanda’s Edward Moya.

The broad-based S&P 500 finished at 4,130.29, up 1.4 percent for the day and 4.3 percent for the week.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 1.0 percent to 32,845.13, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index jumped 1.9 percent to 12,390.69.

Among individual companies, Amazon surged 10.4 percent after impressing analysts with strong online sales and a good performance in its web services business.

Apple also climbed, winning 3.3 percent after reporting better-than-expected results on continued strength of iPhones.

ExxonMobil jumped 4.7 percent and Chevron soared 8.7 percent after both companies reported quarterly earnings records on the rise in energy prices following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

But Procter & Gamble dropped 6.1 percent on disappointment over its outlook, while fellow Dow member Intel sank 8.6 percent after reporting a quarterly loss and cutting it sales outlook.

Intel blamed “the sudden and rapid decline in economic activity” as well as “our own execution issues.”

Uber courts drivers by letting them pick rides

Uber
  • Uber will let drivers see trip details before deciding whether to accept them.
  • The new feature, called Upfront Fares, was tested in several cities and was a success with drivers.
  • Uber is engaged in a long-term effort to prove its business model is socially and economically viable.

Uber on Friday said it will let drivers in the United States see trip details before deciding whether to accept them — a new feature long sought by drivers.

A common lament by drivers at the app-summoned ride platform has been that they have to accept a request before learning where trips will take them, or how profitable they will be.

“Our new trip request screen makes it easier for drivers to decide if a trip is worth their time and effort by providing all the details — including exactly how much they’ll earn and where they’re going — upfront,” chief executive Dara Khosrowshahi said in a blog post.

Revealing details only once a driver had accepted a trip was seen as a way to ensure riders would get picked up promptly, and not be snubbed because they were headed to locations deemed undesirable by drivers.

But Khosrowshahi said drivers have made it clear that they want more flexibility and choice.

Uber said the new feature, called Upfront Fares, was tested in several cities and was a success with drivers while resulting in shorter wait times for passengers.

The ride-sharing firm will also shift from sending drivers a single ride request at a time, to letting them pick from a list of detailed passenger requests in an area.

Uber is engaged in a long-term effort to prove that its business model is socially and economy viable.

The “gig economy” — which uses temporary independent contractors for short-term tasks — has grown rapidly since Uber’s launch in 2009 and is promoted as a flexible way for people to earn money without the constraints of a full-time job.

But there has been growing backlash in countries around the world about the conditions and dangers gig workers face.

Uber driver ranks — which shrank during the Covid-19 pandemic — have not rebounded as quickly as demand for rides, and soaring fuel costs have made the gigs less attractive.

The firm in March announced a surcharge on both rides and Uber Eats meal deliveries that would go directly to drivers to help offset high fuel prices.

Twitter experiments including several multimedia in single tweet

Twitter
  • Twitter is testing a new feature that allows multiple media files to be attached to a single tweet.
  • People are utilizing photos, GIFS, and videos to enhance their Twitter interactions.
  • The feature will only be available to select accounts for a limited time at the moment.

A new feature that will allow users to attach material in several formats to a single tweet is being tested by Twitter. An image, video, or GIF could all be added to a single tweet using this functionality.

Anyone who has used Twitter for any length of time is aware that the company currently only supports the attachment of one specific form of material.

Four photographs can be attached, but there was no method to combine videos, GIFs, or more than one to do so.

With this upgrade, the four-form-of-media restriction still applies, but you can now fill all four spaces with any combination of pictures, videos, and GIFs.

In an interview with Techcrunch, Twitter stated, “We’re testing a new feature that will let people blend up to four media files into a single tweet, regardless of format, with select accounts for a limited time.

People are utilizing photos, GIFS, and videos to enhance their Twitter interactions, which are becoming more and more visual. With this experiment, we want to find out how users can combine these various media types to tweet in ways that go beyond 280 characters.

The feature will only be accessible to selected accounts in specified regions, as is customary for Twitter experiments. When, if ever, the feature will be made available to all users is yet unknown.

BISP aims to enroll 3 million children in FY 2022-23

Benazir Income Support Program Latest Registration Update 2024

ISLAMABAD: The Benazir Income Support Program (BISP) has registered eight million children and distributed Rs. 40 billion to them as part of the Benazir Taleemi Wazaif Program, a Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) project.

An official source said that the future goal is to enroll three million more youngsters by the fiscal year 2022-23 with an allocation of Rs. 35 billion.

Since its inception in 2012, the initiative has focused on increasing school enrolment and decreasing dropout rates among children of BISP members through monetary incentives.

The goal of this initiative was to raise awareness about the significance of education among recipient households, boost enrollment rates, and minimize dropout rates by assuring retention. Children from Benazir Kafalat recipient families aged 4 to 22 are engaged in the program from elementary to grade 12.

The program provides a quarterly payout of Rs. 1500 for primary, Rs. 2500 for secondary, and Rs. 3500 for higher secondary for boys, and Rs. 2000 for primary, Rs. 3000 for secondary, and Rs. 4000 for higher secondary for girls.

The initiative provides a greater stipend for female students, as well as a one-time graduation incentive of Rs. 3000 upon completion of elementary school. The financial payout is conditional on 70% attendance at school.

The biometric-based payment method is in place, and the stipend is paid through the mother of the children who has registered. To reduce leakage and maintain transparency in execution, the initiative is being carried out using an end-to-end digital enrollment and monitoring method.

Concerning the program’s impact, the source stated that it has helped boost the proportion of children now enrolled in school by 13% for males and 15% for girls. School enrolment rates in BISP families are much higher (81 percent) for those supported by the CCT than for those who are not (60 percent).
