Pakistan’s tour to Sri Lanka surrounded by uncertainty

Pakistan tour to Sri Lanka
  • Babar Azam-led team completed a three-day warm-up match in Colombo.
  • Sri Lanka is in discussions with the IMF after defaulting on $51 billion in foreign debt.
  • To cut down on commuting, the government shut down non-essential offices and schools.

Pakistan’s visit to Sri Lanka is uncertain in light of the island nation’s declaration of a state of emergency on Wednesday.

Prior to their two-match Test series against the home team, the Babar Azam-led team just completed a three-day warm-up match.

No decision has been made to cancel the tour, according to a PCB official. “PCB and Sri Lanka Cricket are always in contact,” the official added.

“The series can be delayed if the situation is not under control.”

The first game is scheduled to start on July 16 in Galle, while the second game will start on July 24 in Colombo.

It should be mentioned that following months of widespread protests over an economic crisis, hundreds of people flocked to the prime minister’s office when the president of the nation traveled to the Maldives.

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled his official mansion in Colombo moments before tens of thousands of demonstrators overran it over the weekend, but he promised to step down on Wednesday to pave the way for a “peaceful transition of power.”

In order to prevent protesters from overrunning the compound, police used tear gas, and authorities proclaimed a national state of emergency “to deal with the crisis in the country,” according to the prime minister’s spokesperson Dinouk Colombage.

To “contain the situation,” according to a senior police officer, police put an indefinite curfew in place in the Western Province, which includes Colombo.

Sri Lanka is in discussions with the IMF for a potential rescue after defaulting on its $51 billion in foreign debt in April.

The island’s already limited gasoline supplies are almost gone.

To cut down on commuting and save gasoline, the government has mandated the shutdown of non-essential offices and schools.

Hyundai will open South Korea first EV factory

South Korea
  • In 2025, the first domestic EV-dedicated plant will commence operations in South Korea.
  •  Hyundai unveiled a Won63tn ($48.1bn) investment plan through 2025 in its native nation.
  •  Union members are also dissatisfied with the company’s plan to invest $5.5bn in the US for an EV factory in Georgia.

Hyundai Motor plans to build its first electric vehicle factory in South Korea next year as the company accelerates its shift to greener cars to meet surging global demand.

Monday’s pay negotiations with the labor union resulted in an agreement on the plan, the union announced Tuesday. In 2025, the first domestic EV-dedicated plant will commence operations.

Hyundai unveiled in May a Won63tn ($48.1bn) investment plan through 2025 in its native nation, as the new South Korean government pushes local business expenditure. In 1996, Hyundai last opened a facility in South Korea.

It is also considered a move to appease the union, which voted for a strike earlier this month to demand greater salaries. Union members are also dissatisfied with the company’s plan to invest $5.5 billion in the United States to construct an EV factory in Georgia.

The Georgia facility will begin construction in the first half of 2025 after breaking ground early in 2019.

Hyundai and Kia’s Ioniq 5 and EV6 electric vehicles, introduced earlier this year, are selling well in the United States, pleasing Tesla CEO Elon Musk as EV adoption increases in the country.

By 2030, Hyundai intends to control 12 percent of the worldwide EV market.

Johnny Depp is exonerated in another case before Amber Heard enters a new plea

Johnny Depp
  • Johnny Depp reached a settlement with set manager Greg “Rocky.”
  • If the actor doesn’t comply with the conditions, the lawsuit will reportedly be reopened.
  • Johnny Depp prevailed in his defamation lawsuit against Amber Heard.

The assault and battery lawsuit against Hollywood actor Johnny Depp, which was scheduled to begin later this month in Los Angeles, has apparently been settled. Johnny Depp may face Amber Heard again in Virginia in a million-dollar defamation trial.

According to the report, the Pirates of the Caribbean actor has tentatively settled a lawsuit from a City of Lies crew member who claims the actor assaulted him on film.

The 59-year-old actor reached a settlement with set manager Greg “Rocky” Brooks in a contract that calls for Depp to adhere to the settlement’s vague provisions by the end of August.

“The settlement agreement conditions dismissal of this matter on the satisfactory completion of specified terms that are not to be performed within 45 days of the date of the settlement,” reads the filing.

“A request for dismissal will be filed no later than 1/5/2023,” according to a new report.

If the actor doesn’t comply with the conditions, the lawsuit will reportedly be reopened. Less than two months have passed since he prevailed in his defamation lawsuit against Heard in a Virginia courtroom.

Gregg Brooks reportedly filed a lawsuit against Johnny Depp in 2018, stating that the actor lost his cool when the manager told him they would have to halt filming for the evening. He said that during a drunken outburst, the actor hit him twice.

He claimed Depp yelled at him, punched him twice in the ribs, and offered him $100,000 if he would strike back. After allegedly refusing to swear that he wouldn’t file a lawsuit as a result of the incident, Brooks was sacked from the production.

The movie’s script supervisor, Emma Danoff, defended the actor by claiming to have evidence that the incident never took place.

According to reports, she gave a court document claiming to have seen the confrontation and that Depp only attacked Brooks after the venue management racially disparaged a Black homeless woman, saying: “Depp said to Mr. Brooks, ‘You can’t talk to her like that. You think she is something less than you? Who do you think you are? How dare you?’”

Hockey Olympian Naveed Alam’s first death anniversary

Hockey Olympian Naveed Alam
  • Naveed Alam passed away on June 13, 2021.
  • He was a member of the Hockey World Cup-winning squad in 1994.
  • His condition reportedly declined after chemotherapy, and he was moved to the ICU.

Former Hockey World Cup winner and Olympian Naveed Alam passed away, on June 13, 2021. It’s been a year since the Hockey legend left this mortal world after a prolonged battle with cancer.

He was a member of the World Cup-winning squad in 1994.

The renowned athlete was receiving treatment at Shaukat Khanum Hospital in Lahore after receiving a blood cancer diagnosis.

His condition reportedly declined after chemotherapy, and he was moved to the intensive care unit (ICU).

Prior to the therapy, which was expected to cost four million rupees, he made an effort to get the attention of the federal and provincial authorities.

In a letter to Shaukat Khanum Hospital in Lahore, the Sindh government pledged to cover all costs associated with Olympian Naveed Alam’s care.

The Bangladeshi, Chinese, and Pakistani teams were coached by the athlete that competed in the 1996 Summer Olympics.

Prior to changing course due to a difference of opinion on a few matters, he also served as acting director of development for the Pakistan Hockey Federation.

At the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, Alam managed Pakistan’s hockey squad. After Pakistan’s eighth-place finish at the 2008 Summer Olympics, he was still embroiled in a legal dispute with the PHF elections, in which Qasim Zia and Asif Bajwa were chosen as president and secretary, respectively.

Peloton will stop making workout bikes in-house

bikes
  • Peloton is ending in-house production of the exercise bikes that earned the fitness company a fanatical following.
  • The New York-based company announced it will cease operations at Tonic Fitness Technology.
  •  Rexon Industrial will become the primary manufacturer of Peloton’s bicycles and treadmills.

Peloton is ending in-house production of the exercise bikes that earned the connected fitness company a fanatical following, in the latest strategic rethink to follow the sharp reversal in its financial fortunes.

The New York-based company announced it will cease operations at Tonic Fitness Technology, a Taiwanese manufacturing facility it purchased for approximately $45 million less than three years ago. Rexon Industrial, an additional Taiwanese company with which Peloton has collaborated for several years, will become the primary manufacturer of Peloton’s bicycles and treadmills.

Barry McCarthy, the former Netflix, and Spotify executive hired as Peloton’s CEO in February described the move as a natural progression in the company’s strategy to simplify its supply chain and focus on software and content rather than hardware, where he has been attempting to increase profit margins.

“We anticipate that this move, together with others, will allow us to continue decreasing the cash strain on the firm and increasing our flexibility,” he said.

McCarthy said that cash outflows had left Peloton “thinly capitalized” for a company of its size. In May, Peloton reported that it had concluded its fiscal third quarter with only $879m in unrestricted cash and cash equivalents.

McCarthy has subsequently borrowed $750 million in fresh finance from lenders, including Blackstone and Apollo, in an effort to reduce yearly expenditures by $800 million by 2024.

However, its stock price has plummeted below $9 per share, reducing its equity worth to $3 billion from a record of about $50 billion in late 2020, when investors thought that the pandemic-fueled spike in demand for at-home exercise would continue.

Prince Charles claimed in it that the entire situation was “ghastly” and said, “Bless you for taking the trouble to write as you did in the wake of all the ghastliness that has been going on!

He also lamented, “I find it utterly incredible, as I have done nothing but show people like Paul Burrell every consideration over the years.”

“Unfortunately we are now to be treated as mere pawns in a terrifying and ongoing media circulation war where the actual facts are totally disregarded and vast sums of money are offered as bribes to former and current members of staff to exercise their pathetic jealousies and vendettas in public.”

New drone system saves lives at sea

drone
  • A team from the Sweden’s Chalmers University of Technology is developing a fully autonomous drone system that can enhance the speed and effectiveness of maritime rescue operations.
  • The system consists of three separate components that work together a marine catamaran drone, aerial drones, and a fixed-winged quadcopter.
  • Cooperating drone systems have the potential to save more lives.

In the last few years, as a result of humanitarian crises around the world, thousands of refugees have fled across the seas, often on rickety dinghies and rafts. A team from the Sweden’s Chalmers University of Technology is currently developing a fully autonomous drone system that can enhance the speed and effectiveness of maritime rescue operations.

In the context of refugee crises and migration movements, the ocean has been a frequent and perilous path. People have perished at sea as a result of traveling on unstable or overloaded ships. In the project ‘Quadcopter, fixed-wing, and maritime drones for search and rescue,’ a team from Chalmers is developing a new type of fully automated search and rescue system.

Before crewed rescue vehicles arrive, the system depends on water and aircraft to autonomously investigate a region, alert authorities to those in need, and provide rudimentary help through a communication system.

The drone system consists of three separate components that work together: a marine catamaran drone called Seacat that serves as a base for the other drones, a fleet of winged aerial drones that monitor the surrounding area, and a quadcopter that can approach people in distress and deliver supplies, medical aids, or floatation devices. The quadcopter, a drone with four engines and consequently the ability to hover, can carry up to two kilograms of weight.

Xin Zhao, post-doc in the Fluid Mechanics Division at Chalmers, said, “The project is based on the simple principle that different drones have different advantages, and by allowing several different types of autonomous drones to work together, search efficiency and rescue response speed can be significantly improved, with the potential to save more lives.”

Tomas Gronstedt, a professor in the Fluid Dynamics Division, remarked, “Additionally, the system might, in theory, be linked to any public service or to volunteers who may provide support.”

The Vehicle Mechanics and Autonomous Systems Division and the Fluid Dynamics Division of the Department of Mechanics and Maritime Sciences collaborated to design the system.

Marine and avian drones are conceived, constructed, and tested at Chalmers.

Champions League final chaos caused by “Dysfunctions”, not supporters: French enquiry

Champions League Final
  • French Senate enquiry concludes problems were in the organization rather than Liverpool supporters.
  • Fake tickets, the late arrival of supporters at the stadium, or the presence of thousands of fans without tickets were discounted as the main causes.
  • The fiasco was considered a national embarrassment for France.

A French Senate enquiry into chaotic scenes at the Champions League final in May in Paris concluded Wednesday the problems were caused by a “string of dysfunctions” in the organisation, rather than Liverpool supporters as claimed by the government.

“These dysfunctions were at every level, not only during the implementation (during the game) but also during preparations in advance,” the co-chair of the enquiry Laurent Lafon told reporters at a press conference.

The “dysfunctions” included a failure to anticipate how supporters would arrive at the stadium due to a transport strike, inadequate instructions and the use of police checkpoints that caused pressure points on the way to the game.

The fact-finding mission led by two senators has heard from witnesses since the Liverpool-Real Madrid game on May 28 which was marred by a delayed kick-off, crushes, teargas and street crime.

The enquiry discounted the issue of fake tickets, the late arrival of supporters at the stadium, or the presence of thousands of fans without tickets as the main causes.

Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin had suggested all of these as factors to explain the fiasco, which was a national embarrassment for France.

“It’s not the number of people around the stadium that is the cause of these dysfunctions,” Lafon added.

  • A teaser, titled Chup, was released earlier this week.

R Balki has pulled off a sort of casting coup by casting Sunny Deol and Dulquer Salmaan in an edge-of-your-seat thriller with references to ace filmmaker Guru Dutt. A teaser, titled Chup, was recently released. Balki discusses, “Chup is a thriller and there are a lot of Guru Dutt references in the film. It’s not based on Guru Dutt, but you will hear of him and his films. Basically, it’s about the artist in him.”

Balki maintains that all of the actors were chosen for a specific reason. “I like to cast people not so much unexpectedly, but based on who I feel is closest to my character,” Balki goes on to remark that the casting is nothing out of the ordinary. “This is a commercial film, a commercial thriller, but in a world never done before. The thought is very relevant today and the narrative isn’t different from what we usually see. It’s a new space for Sunny sir, but there is nothing unusual.”
