Two Sudanese protesters killed as thousands rally against army rule

Sudanese protesters
  • Thousands of anti-coup protesters take to the streets, Security forces fire tear gas and stun grenades to disperse demonstrators.
  • The death toll from months of protest-related violence rises to 105.
  • Sudan has been roiled by near-weekly protests since Burhan seized power last year.

Two Sudanese demonstrators were killed Thursday by “bullets to the chest,” pro-democracy medics said, as thousands of anti-coup protesters took to the streets, AFP correspondents reported.

“Even if we die, the military will not rule us,” protesters chanted, urging the reversal of an October military coup by army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, that prompted foreign governments to slash aid, deepening a chronic economic crisis.

“Down with Burhan’s rule,” others chanted.

AFP correspondents reported security forces firing tear gas and stun grenades to disperse demonstrations, the latest crack down on the anti-coup movement over the past eight months.

Two protesters were killed Thursday in the city of Omdurman, across the Nile river from the capital Khartoum, pro-democracy medics said, bringing the death toll from months of protest-related violence to 105.

The medics had previously reported one demonstrator was shot dead on Wednesday during small-scale protests in the run-up to the main rallies.

An AFP correspondent said internet and phone lines had been disrupted since the early hours of Thursday, a measure the Sudanese authorities often impose to prevent mass gatherings.

Security was tight in Khartoum despite the recent lifting of a state of emergency imposed after the coup.

Troops and police blocked off roads leading to both army headquarters and the presidential palace, witnesses said.

New renders highlight differences between the OnePlus 10T & 10 Pro

OnePlus
  • OnePlus 10T could be the final flagship release of the year when it is announced next month.
  • Rumored changes include a less powerful camera and faster 150W charging (up from 80W).
  • Camera Dynamics: 50MP with OIS main, 16MP ultra wide, no telephoto.

Speculative renderings of the OnePlus 10T with an intriguing design surfaced earlier this month. New renders recently released appear to be lot more similar to the design of the 10 Pro, but still having some significant variations.

Allegedly based on actual images of a pre-production device, these fresh renders. They demonstrate that, unlike earlier models, the camera hump on the rear of the phone won’t cover the entire width of the device.

The OnePlus 10T will differ from the existing OnePlus 10 Pro in a number of ways, according to the leaker.

It appears that the metal frame will be swapped out for a plastic one, and the bump’s shape, particularly the beveling around it, will be altered.

There will be two significant changes: first, the display will be flat; and second, the Alert slider won’t be present.

Recent OnePlus launches have lost one of the brand’s defining characteristics that has been present almost from the start, and this has started to take on a bit of a pattern. It appears to be restricted to Pro models only currently.

The display should have the same size as the Pro, measuring 6.7″, but it is anticipated to lose QHD+ resolution in favour of FHD+. Other speculated modifications include a less powerful camera and faster 150W charging (up from 80W) (50MP with OIS main, 16MP ultra wide, no telephoto).

Naturally, the new Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chip will replace the outgoing one. It ought to provide greater power effectiveness (which will be offset by a smaller battery, 4,800mAh vs. 5,000mAh).

According to reports, the OnePlus 10T will come in Black and Green. This will reportedly be the final OnePlus flagship release of the year when it is announced next month.

Hell of families of captured Ukraine Azovstal ‘heroes’

Azovstal
  • Hundreds of Azovstal fighters surrendered to Russian troops who took over Mariupol.
  • Their families and loved ones are still unsure whether they are dead or alive.
  • Denys Prokopenko’s wife says she has been “exhausted” by the wait for news.

For weeks, the world watched as Mariupol’s last defenders resisted Russian bombardment beneath the city’s massive Azovstal steel plant.

The epic battle came to represent Ukrainian resistance to Russian invasion.

However, more than a month after hundreds of Azovstal fighters surrendered to Russian troops who took over the besieged port, their families and loved ones are still unsure whether they are dead or alive.

Among them is Kateryna Prokopenko, the wife of Denys Prokopenko, the commander of Ukraine’s Azov Regiment — a battalion that led the units holed up in the Azovstal plant.

It was Prokopenko — a large bandage on his right arm — who announced on May 20 that Ukraine’s high command had ordered them to surrender to save his soldiers’ lives.

Kateryna told AFP that during their last conversation, her husband promised they “would see each other soon”.

“Last time I spoke to my husband, I told him he was like a Marvel hero but a real one,” the 27-year-old said.

Sergiy Volynsky, another officer from Azovstal, sent his family “a last text message” before surrendering, saying he would no longer be in touch, his sister Tatyana Kharko said.

Since then, they’ve had “not a word” from him.

“Absolutely nothing. I don’t know where he is, if he has been feed, if he has been tortured,” Kharko, 32, told AFP.

“There are reports in the Russian media that some guys were transferred to Moscow, others to elsewhere in Russia,” she added.

Israel parliament dissolves, sets fifth election in less than four years

Israel parliament
  • Israel’s parliament dissolves forcing country to hold its fifth election in four years.
  • Yair Lapid takes over as caretaker prime minister at midnight.
  • Raam party chief Mansour Abbas says his party will continue advocating for Arab society.

Israeli lawmakers dissolved parliament on Thursday forcing the country to hold its fifth election in less than four years, with Foreign Minister Yair Lapid taking over as caretaker prime minister at midnight.

The centrist Lapid embraced outgoing Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, whose year in charge of an unwieldy eight-party coalition was ultimately undone by ideological divisions.

Lapid, whose Hungarian-born father survived the Holocaust, went immediately to Jerusalem’s Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial centre after the parliament vote.

“There, I promised my late father that I will always keep Israel strong and capable of defending itself and protecting its children,” the 58-year-old said in a statement.

The newly called election set for November 1 marks another sign that Israel remains mired in an unprecedented era of political gridlock, with early opinion polls indicating the results may again be inconclusive.

The religious-nationalist Bennett has said he will not contest the vote and is stepping back from politics, tweeting the Hebrew word “Toda” (thank you), after lawmakers sealed his departure from office. He later hosted Lapid for a short handover ceremony.

Hawkish former prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu has assured that he and his allies — extreme-right nationalists and ultra-Orthodox Jewish parties — will finally rally a majority, following what he described on Thursday as a “failed (coalition) experiment”.
