Arif Malik, BCCI’s warnings actually helped KPL

Arif Malik

ISLAMABAD: Arif Malik, the president of the Kashmir Premier League (KPL), congratulated the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Monday, stating that the BCCI’s antics had benefited the league rather than hurting it.

“Thanks to the BCCI,” said Arif Malik, speaking on the Replay show on Dawn News. He stated: “This board is a mafia and is considered a terror in the world. Not only are they stopping the cricketers [from playing in the tournament], they are preventing our production crew from arriving [to cover the event].”

Before the entire controversy with the BCCI began, the KPL chief expressed concern about the league’s marketing, stating that the KPL currently has enormous social media popularity.

In response to a question, Malik stated that he was receiving calls from cricket boards all over the world, who were now interested in learning more about the KPL.

The BCCI’s “Hue and cry” has secured the KPL’s success even before it begins, he said, adding that his staff has put in a lot of effort and attention to the league.

Despite being cautioned by the BCCI not to participate in the KPL, he claimed that former South African batsman Herschelle Gibbs and Sri Lanka’s Dilshan have consented to play.

He added that the former “will be here soon,” without specifying a date because of security concerns.

“Even our lives should be readily available” for an event like the KPL, Malik stated, adding that sentiments should be prioritized before workload management.

Aalia Rasheed, a sports journalist, concurred with the KPL president, stating that the BCCI had unknowingly helped promote the cricket league and generate excitement about it around the world in its attempt to block it.

In her tweet, she wrote: “While discouraging the international players from participating in the Kashmir Premier League, @BCCI has actually given the said T20 league a much-needed hype! The organizers of the @kpl_20 must be obliged.”

She responded to a social media user by asking why the BCCI went to such lengths to prevent Monty Panesar, Gibbs, and Dilshan from participating in the KPL if they were washed-up players.

Concerned about the KPL’s hosting in Pakistan, the BCCI issued a warning to foreign cricket boards last week for permitting its players to participate in the tournament.

Several foreign cricketers withdrew from the event, which is due to begin on August 6, after receiving threats from the Indian cricket board.

The KPL president, on the other hand, stated that the event will take on as planned, with Pakistani cricketers taking part.

Monty Panesar, Matt Prior, Phil Mustard, Owais Shah, and Tenu Best are the six overseas cricketers who have withdrawn from the KPL.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has expressed dissatisfaction with the International Cricket Council (ICC) summoning some ICC members and compelling them to remove their former cricketers from the Kashmir Premier League.

“The PCB believes the BCCI has once again breached international norms and the spirit of the gentleman’s game by interfering in the internal affairs of the ICC members as the KPL has been approved by the PCB,” According to a statement released by the cricket board on Saturday,

“The PCB considers the BCCI has brought the game into disrepute by issuing warnings to multiple ICC members to stop their retired cricketers from featuring in the Kashmir Premier League, further threatening they will not be allowed entry into India for cricket-related work.”

Such behavior by the BCCI is entirely unacceptable, since it goes against the spirit of cricket’s preamble, and establishes a terrible precedent that must be condoned or disregarded, according to the statement.

“The PCB will raise this matter at the appropriate ICC forum and also reserves the right to take any further action that is available to us within the ICC charter.”

Bitcoin ” versus “ the Chinese Digital Yuan

Bitcoin

Over 80 governments throughout the world (representing 90% of global GDP) are researching or experimenting with central bank digital currencies at the moment (CBDCs).

Only five nations had launched CBDCs as of July 2021. The Bahamas, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Antigua and Barbuda, Saint Lucia, and Grenada are all Caribbean island nations.

With its digital yuan, commonly known as the e-RMB or the Digital Currency, Electronic Payments, China has made the most progress toward becoming a fully-fledged CBDC of all major economies (DCEP).

CBDCs are digital currency managed by the government. In China’s case, the CBDC would be a digital counterpart of the yuan, the country’s currency (hence, e-RMB). CBDCs are comparable to stablecoins, which are tied to a fiat currency at a 1:1 ratio.

So the digital yuan is essentially the digital version of China’s physical currency: instead of carrying a physical banknote in your pocket, you digitally save the fiat in a mobile wallet. Each issued digital yuan token has the same unique identification as each real banknote printed by the central bank.

CBDCs, unlike cryptocurrencies, aren’t usually built on a decentralized blockchain since the central bank wants to keep control of the ledgers.

The digital yuan, which was first proposed in 2017, has been in the experimental stage since April 2020.

The People’s Bank of China (PBoC) began airdropping millions of digital yuan to citizens in October 2020 as part of a test of the technology—and to generate some excitement about it. In the summer of 2021, this is still going on.

The digital yuan is already accepted by a growing number of retailers around China, including Walmart.

According to the PBoC’s July 2021 progress report, the digital yuan was used in 70.75 million transactions by the end of June, with a total value of 34.5 billion yuan ($5 billion).

A huge roll-out during the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics in February is next on the digital yuan’s plan. Foreign visitors will be included in the rollout.

Senators Cynthia Lummis (R-WY) and Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) and Roger Wicker (R-MS), all supporters of Bitcoin, have asked the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee to prohibit athletes from using the digital yuan because it “may be used to surveil Chinese citizens and those visiting China on an unprecedented scale.”

Bitcoin Prices Fall, Tesla and Square are Counting their Losses

bitcoin

Some businesses that invested in bitcoin have reported losses as the cryptocurrency’s price has fallen, yet many others have profited.

During the BTC 2021 conference in Miami, Jack Dorsey, co-founder, and CEO of Twitter Inc. and Square Inc. participated.

Square announced late Sunday that its bitcoin-related investments cost the company $45 million in operating profits in the second quarter. That’s more than double the amount of money it lost in the first quarter.

In February, the digital payments firm said that it has purchased $170 million in BTC, doubling its previous buy from October 2020. As of the end of 2020, that accounted for roughly 5% of the company’s total assets. Square made the statement in its earnings report on Sunday, which was disclosed earlier than expected to coincide with the company’s $29 billion acquisition of Australian financial tech business Afterpay.

As bitcoin becomes more mainstream, businesses are increasingly embracing it. The world’s largest digital coin, however, had a difficult second quarter. BTC reached a high of $63,000 in April before plummeting to around $30,000 in early July. On Monday, Bitcoin was trading slightly around $39,000.

In its most recent quarter, Tesla, for example, reported a $23 million bitcoin-related impairment, according to the company’s second-quarter financial report released late last month.

This quarter, Square said it observed “significant year-over-year growth in bitcoin revenue.” BTC revenue reached $2.72 billion, a threefold increase year over year. Bitcoin’s gross profit was $55 million at the same time. This amounts to about 2% of bitcoin revenue.

The firm’s gross profit grew by 91 percent year over year, setting a new quarterly high. For the quarter, net sales excluding bitcoin were $1.96 billion, up 87 percent year over year.

Ethereum miner revenue surpasses Bitcoin’s for third month in a row

Ethereum

For the third month in a row, Ethereum miners have made more money than Bitcoin miners, the longest streak in history.

Ethereum miners made $1.03 billion in revenue in July, according to The Block’s Data Dashboard, a minor decrease from the previous month.

Bitcoin miners, for their part, earned $971.8 million in July, up over $100 million from June.

While transaction fees have remained a reliable source of revenue for Ethereum miners, this cannot be true for Bitcoin miners. Last month, transaction fees accounted for only 3.1 percent of Bitcoin mining revenue.

Mining revenue is a monetary estimate of the earnings generated by blockchain miners. It’s determined by multiplying each block’s current mining rewards plus transaction fees by the asset’s price for the month. It excludes costs such as power, other operating expenses, and taxes paid by miners.

Crypto Team is Being Built by PayPal in Ireland as Bitcoin Acceptance Grows

crypto

At the time when Bitcoin and Ether are gaining popularity, the new hires are required to help PayPal expand its crypto-focused business offering.

PayPal, the global payments company, is hiring for many cryptocurrency-related posts at its Ireland headquarters, highlighting the business’s ambitions in the fast-rising digital asset sector.

PayPal is looking to fill several crypto-focused posts in compliance, anti-money laundering, and business development for its Dublin and Dundalk offices, according to the Dublin-based Irish Independent, one of the country’s most popular news outlets.

PayPal established a specialized crypto and blockchain business unit earlier this year to assist its entrance into cryptocurrencies, which took place in October 2020 with the purchase of Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH), Bitcoin Cash (BCH), and Litecoin (LTC) by clients in the United States.

The company expanded its offering in March of this year, allowing US clients to pay for products and services with their digital asset holdings.

PayPal said two months later that clients would be able to withdraw their cryptocurrency to third-party wallets.

PayPal’s CEO, Dan Schulman, stated in April that the company’s crypto business has exceeded all expectations in its first six months of existence.

The fast adoption of digital assets like Bitcoin and Ether was accompanied by a tremendous price increase that brought the whole cryptocurrency market to a worth of about $2.6 trillion.

Crypto markets seem to have hit a bottom and are now hiking upwards again, after a significant correction between May and July.

Schulman stated on PayPal’s quarterly earnings call last week that the company’s crypto trading business would be arriving in the UK in the near future. Upgrades to allow for faster payment processing are also in the works, according to him.

Sindh, Centre have spat yet again over the curfew

Sindh

KARACHI/ISLAMABAD: The federation and the Sindh government have once again spat over the latter’s announcement of a complete lockdown, for both sides jealously clinging to their respective positions and hurling barbs at each other.

Governor Sindh Imran Ismail was the first to react, advising Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah to adhere to SOPs rather than imposing a comprehensive and curfew-like lockdown to deal with the situation.

Imran Ismail, speaking at a press conference at the Governor House here, made it clear that the federation was opposed to taking drastic measures to combat the pandemic because the national economy could not afford to shut down industries and businesses, especially in Karachi, the country’s economic hub.

“The Sindh government neither took the federal government on board while taking the decision nor did it consult with the other stakeholders including trade and industrial community,” he said.

He further claimed that the decision was in violation of a Supreme Court order that the NCOC rules be implemented in the case of a pandemic.

He stated that total closure of business and industry was not a practical option and that the provincial government’s unilateral action was a surprise to both the federal government and NCOC.

“It was better to sternly enforce the SOPs first and then opt for lockdown in hot spots. If the situation does not improve, move gradually towards the extreme measures,” he advised.

As a result, Imran Ismail added, the federal government and all of its institutions were prepared to provide the Sindh government with every possible form of help.

He stated that the federation does not support a comprehensive and curfew-like lockdown, adding that Prime Minister Imran Khan believes that the national economy and the majority of the population would be unable to sustain the terrible consequences of such a lockdown.

“Prudent and far-sighted policies of Imran Khan leading the government to deal with the situation were globally acknowledged and admired because the closure of industries and markets is like cutting down the jugular vein of economy,” he maintained.

He stated that it was the chief minister’s and his team’s job to carefully follow the SOPs throughout the province and that the provincial executive’s failure looked to be the primary cause of the contagion’s spread, as the detection ratio had reached 30%.

“It is evident that the provincial administration failed to ensure observance of SOPs in markets and other public places during Eidul Azha. Even people in queues outside the vaccination centers were seen not wearing facemasks,” he noted.

The government-provided vaccine was being sold, according to reports, and vaccination cards were being issued without jabs, according to the governor.

“The Sindh government must refrain from depriving its people of their sources of livelihood and reconsider its decision,” Imran Ismail said.

Before making any such decision, he recommended consulting with business organizations, trade unions, elected officials, notables, and prominent others.

Replying to a query about the conduct of elections during the COVID situation, Imran Ismail said the government had requested the Election Commission of Pakistan for postponement of elections till improvement in the situation but the decision rested with the Commission.

Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Fawad Chaudhry Saturday feared the Sindh government’s unilateral actions contrary to the federal government and National Command and Control Centre’s (NCOC) directives might cause immense damage to the economy.

In a video message, he emphasized that Pakistan successfully fought the first three waves of the pandemic with a strategy and that could not be changed.

The minister pointed out that the closure of industry in Sindh would harm the economy and create employment problems.

“The industries whose 100 percent workforce is vaccinated, should be reopened,” he added.

Fawad contended that the way the Sindh government was imposing restrictions would only add to the hardships of the common man.

He highlighted that, under Articles 149 and 151 of the Constitution, as well as the Supreme Court’s decision, provincial governments could not make unilateral decisions, but were instead required to follow the federal government’s instructions and the NCOC’s strategy.

The minister insisted, “The Sindh government, therefore, should immediately open industries, and not pressurize traders and daily wage earners, regretting that had the Sindh government implemented the standard operating procedures (SOPs) related to the coronavirus, the province would not have been facing the present situation.”

He added that the fourth wave of coronavirus originated in India, where the Narendra Modi government failed to take the necessary actions to stop the spread.

“Today, India has become a source of spreading Delta virus in the entire region. While the world economies are just recovering from the coronavirus successfully, they again came under stress due to the irresponsible policies of the Indian government.”

Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Asad Umar tweeted, according to sources.

“The decisions made yesterday, especially those pertaining to industries and transport, need to be reviewed. We put forth our point of view yesterday, as well as today, based on which a partial amendment has been announced, which is a welcome sign. But further amendments are needed,”

Pakistan’s clever lockdown policy, which protects both people’s health and work, was “praised across the world,” according to Umar.

“Such decisions were made after minutely reviewing ground realities,” he said.

“These decisions are taken via a platform where there is a presence of all federal, civil, military, and provincial institutions,” the federal minister said.

The NCOC chief said after a year’s performance, there should be no doubt that the forum operates “with no political bias” and makes decisions that are in the best interest of the nation.

“If every province had relied on its own resources and made decisions without consultations, then this could not have been possible,” Asad stated, It’s hard to beat COVID-19 without teamwork.

Asad Umar believed that the Sindh government will discuss the NCOC further on its decisions in a meeting tomorrow and that a policy would develop that would preserve citizens’ health and jobs.

To stop the spread of COVID in Karachi, the Sindh government should focus on SOPs execution and targeted interventions in high-risk situations, according to Energy Minister Hammad Azhar on Saturday.

“A blanket lockdown in the economic heart of Pakistan would endanger livelihoods of millions,” he tweeted.

Bilawal tweeted after his press conference in Islamabad that lives were in danger, but the PTI was engaging in hypocrite politics.

Bilawal also uploaded videos of the lockdowns in Lahore and other Punjab cities.

Bilawal tweeted, “Lockdowns were used to stop the spread of COVID in Lahore. Now PTI opposes and undermines all measures to contain the spread in Sindh. “If, God forbid, we see an India like situation arising PTIs disinformation and sabotage are to blame.”

Sindh Law and Environment Adviser Barrister Murtaza Wahab defended their position on the lockdown, claiming that they initially shared the drafted notification [imposing lockdown] with the NCOC before issuing the order.

Murtaza Wahab, speaking during a news conference at the Chief Minister’s House, released documents relevant to the newest lockdown orders with the media, which he had previously shared with the federal government.

He recalled that after attending the provincial coronavirus task force meeting, CM Murad Ali Shah called Prime Minister’s Aide on Health Dr. Faisal Sultan and Federal Planning and Development Minister Asad Umar to discuss the NCOC’s decision to issue its own notification (following the Sindh government’s notification to impose lockdown in Sindh). Instead of issuing the notification, the federal government’s spokesman afterward objected to the Sindh government’s jurisdiction to enforce the lockdown, he added.

Following federal objections to an inter-provincial public transportation prohibition, he claimed, Sindh submitted a revised notification to address those objections.

The NCOC, according to Barrister Wahab, never disputed their decision to impose lockdown in Sindh.

“We try our best to work in conformity with the federal government but it is unfortunate that these people come up with a different version when they appear on the TV screens,” he stated, referring to the federal authorities concerned.

“It is my request that this issue shouldn’t be politicized, as we are under obligation to protect the masses against this lethal epidemic. I call upon the people who issue statements that they should persuade the people (to adopt safety precautions). For God’s sake, they shouldn’t cause division among the people,” he said.

Nobody had objected when Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar ordered a lockdown in Lahore, he said, and they had also refrained from criticizing it.

“We know how serious the issue of coronavirus is, likewise, Usman Buzdar knows well the situation of Lahore. In the same fashion, the people present in Islamabad don’t know the severity of (coronavirus) situation in Karachi,” said Barrister Wahab.
