Italy migrant boat shipwreck: Police detained three for alleged smuggling

Italy
  • At least 64 migrants died in a shipwreck off Italy’s southern coast.
  • Authorities have cautioned that the final death toll might exceed 100.
  • A Turkish male and two Pakistani nationals were apprehended.

Following the deaths of at least 64 migrants in a shipwreck off Italy‘s southern coast on Sunday, police arrested three persons on suspicion of people smuggling.

A Turkish male and two Pakistani nationals were apprehended.

The majority of persons aboard the 200-person wooden boats were claimed to be from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia, Syria, Iraq, and Iran.

Authorities have cautioned that the final death toll might exceed 100.

On Tuesday morning, rescuers recovered another body from the sea: that of a guy.

Despite terrible weather, the three men apprehended are reported to have sailed the boat from Izmir, Turkey, to Calabria, Italy.

Authorities claim they reportedly requested the migrants for roughly €8,000 (£7,000; $8,500) each to make the arduous journey.

The ship is said to have sunk after colliding with rocks in heavy weather while attempting to land in Crotone.

The coastguard said that 80 passengers were found alive, “including some who managed to reach the land after the sinking,” implying that many more were still missing.

The coffins of the victims found so far have been put out in a sports hall in Crotone – little white caskets for the younger victims and brown ones for the elderly – to allow people to pay their condolences. At least 12 children, including an infant, have been killed.

Families of the victims from Northern Europe have gathered to try to find out what happened to their loved ones and identify bodies where needed.

Several of the migrants on board had come from Afghanistan, according to rescuers, and Pakistan has confirmed that 16 of its residents survived the accident, with four still missing.

Since 2014, more than 20,000 people have died or gone missing at sea in the central Mediterranean, according to monitoring organizations.

Italy migrant boat shipwreck: Death toll rise to 60, dozen missing

Italy
  • The ship blew up while attempting to land near the Calabrian seaside.
  • At least 150 people were on board.
  • A baby believed to be only a few months old was among the deceased.

Italy: At least 59 migrants, including 12 children, were killed and dozens more remain missing after their boat capsized in strong waves off the coast of southern Italy.

The ship blew up while attempting to land near the Calabrian seaside town of Crotone. According to survivors, at least 150 people were on board.

According to Italy’s president, many of them were fleeing terrible circumstances.

Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who visited the area, stated that up to 30 individuals remain missing.

According to Italy’s news agency, a baby believed to be only a few months old was among the deceased.

Corpses were retrieved from a neighboring coastal resort’s beach.

The coastguard claimed 80 passengers had been found alive, “including some who managed to reach the land after the sinking”.

The exact number of people on the boat when it split apart is unknown; rescue officials informed the AFP news agency that the vessel was carrying “more than 200 people,” implying that more than 60 people are still missing.

Passengers from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia, and Iran boarded the ship, which set sail from Turkey a few days ago.

Every year, a large number of migrants fleeing conflict or poverty make their way from Africa to Italy.

The ship is said to have sunk after colliding with rocks during rough weather, sparking a massive search and rescue operation both on land and at sea.

Timber from the shipwreck, which had been broken into bits, washed ashore on the beach, along with fragments of the hull, according to video footage.

Survivors may be seen huddled under blankets, being catered to by Red Cross personnel. Some people have been transported to the hospital.

“There had been landings, but never a tragedy like this,” said Antonio Ceraso, mayor of Cruto.

Mogadishu bomb and gun attack results in at least five casualties

Mogadishu
  • At least five civilians were killed.
  • Attackers from the group broke into the building housing the mayor.
  • Security troops killed six members of the armed organization.

Mogadishu: According to the ministry of information, at least five civilians were killed when members of the al-Shabab armed group detonated a bomb before storming a government facility in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia.

Around midday (09:00 GMT), attackers from the group broke into the building housing the mayor of Mogadishu’s office and exchanged gunfire with security personnel, according to the ministry on Sunday.

According to its Facebook page, security troops killed six members of the armed organization and secured the area around 6 p.m.

Since President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s government launched an offensive against the al-Qaeda-linked group in August, al-Shabab has increased its attacks in a show of defiance.

“We were in the office when a blast deafened us. We were out of time. “Then there was gunfire,” Farah Abdullahi, who works in the mayor’s office, said.

According to Abdikadir Abdirahman, director of Aamin Ambulance Services, sixteen persons were hurt in the attack.

The mayor’s office is in the local government headquarters building, which is in a well-protected section of Mogadishu.

Al-Shabab announced in a statement that its bombs struck “then foot fighters entered the building after murdering the building guards”.

The armed group, which has been fighting the government since 2006 and attempting to impose its own interpretation of Islamic law, carries out bombings and gun attacks across the country on a regular basis.

One of Somalia’s semi-autonomous states reported on Sunday that regional and Somalia federal forces had launched attacks on al-Shabab and taken control of Janay Abdale town from the armed group, indicating that the government was expanding its offensive against the group into the country’s south.

  • He said cutting off Al-financial Shabaab’s flows and countering their hateful message must be combined with a military approach.

Somalia’s new President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, putting an end to Al-violent Shabaab’s insurgency will require more than a military approach, and his government will negotiate with the extremist group only when the time is right.

He claimed that the Al-Qaeda affiliate responsible for deadly attacks across East Africa had developed a “coping mechanism” in response to military aggression and could not be defeated militarily.

Al-Shabaab has been seeking to overthrow the foreign-backed government in Mogadishu for over a decade and remains a potent threat despite efforts to defeat them militarily.

Mohamud, who was elected in May after previously serving as president from 2012 to 2017, said past approaches to Al-Shabaab had not worked, and his government was open to alternatives including talks when appropriate.
