Solangi takes part in 69th Japan Self-Defence Forces Day

ISLAMABAD: Caretaker Minister for Information and Broadcasting Murtaza Solangi took part in the celebrations of the 69th Japan Self-Defence Forces (JSDF) Day.

The minister attended a reception arranged by the Embassy of Japan in Islamabad to celebrate the 69th anniversary. In the reception, military officials, caretaker ministers, parliamentarians, diplomats, and other individuals were also present.

On the occasion, the minister felicitated the people and the Government of Japan, and highlighted the growing bilateral ties between Pakistan and Japan in the area of defence.

“I am pleased to see progress in defence exchanges between Japan and Pakistan,” he remarked on the occasion.

The minister along with Ambassador of Japan to Pakistan Mitsuhiro Wada and others also participated in the cake cutting ceremony.

On the other hand, Caretaker Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Murtaza Solangi said on Wednesday that lawyers were defenders of democracy, human rights and the Constitution.

This he said in a congratulatory message to newly elected office bearers of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA).

The minister congratulated the newly elected SCBA President Shahzad Shaukat, Secretary Ali Imran Syed and other newly elected office bearers.

The minister lauded the historic role of lawyers in promoting the rule of law, the supremacy of the Constitution and democratic traditions.

Murtaza Solangi opined that lawyers act as the bridge between the bar and the bench and it was not possible to establish a developed society without justice.

SCBA challenges CCI decision to hold polls on new census

ISLAMABAD: The decision of the Council of Common Interests (CCI) to approve the new census was challenged in the Supreme Court on Wednesday.

The Supreme Court Bar Association of Pakistan (SCBAP) has approached the Supreme Court against the election on new constituencies.

It has been pleaded in the petition that the caretaker chief ministers of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab attended the CCI meeting on August 5. In the light of the decision taken in the meeting, the ongoing notification should be declared illegal. The Election Commission has also been requested to order the announcement of the election date immediately.

President of the Supreme Court Bar Association Abid Zuberi has filed a constitutional petition in the Supreme Court against the decision of the Council of Common Interests(CCI) to hold elections under the new census.

The petition states that the notification issued on August 5 should be declared illegal in the light of the decision of the Council of Common Interests. They cannot use their powers, the caretaker chief ministers were not eligible to participate in the meeting of the Council of Common Interests.

The task of the caretaker governments is to conduct elections according to the constitution and law. After the dissolution of the two provincial assemblies, the President did not re-establish the Council of Common Interests.

The petition further states that the delay in the general elections of the National and Provincial Assemblies is tantamount to sabotaging the Constitution. The caretaker Chief Ministers of Punjab and KP have failed to conduct the elections within 90 days.

The Election Commission has ordered redistricting under the Election Act. cannot start the process, the purpose of notifying the new census is nothing but postponing the election.

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) on Thursday strongly condemned postponement of  elections in Punjab by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

President Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA)  Abid Shahid Zuberi in his statement said that the postponement of the elections by the Election Commission of Pakistan is a violation of the Constitution.

Abid Shahid Zuberi said ECP did not take into account the Constitution and the Supreme Court decision while making the decision. He said ECP has violated its constitutional mandate with the decision.

President SCBA said that the caretaker government cannot continue working for more than 90 days. He said restoration of democracy and timely elections are the need of the hours.

He said all institutions have the responsibility to protect the constitution as all constitutional officers have taken an oath to protect the constitution. He said violation of the constitution by the constitutional body should not be allowed.
