Incumbent govt. determined to end corruption, money laundering: PM Imran

PM Imran Twitter

Prime Minister Imran Khan on Tuesday reacted to a leaked video showing PTI lawmakers allegedly selling their votes in exchange for money handed out by a former MPA of the PPP saying, ‘buying and selling votes in Senate reflects the total destruction of the nation’s morality.

A video filmed around the time of the Senate elections 2018 started doing the rounds on social media earlier today which showed the massive rigging and horse trading.

Taking to Twitter, the premier wrote, “The videos showing the shameful way in which politicians buy & sell votes in Senate reflects the total destruction of the nation’s morality by successive ruling elites as they drowned the nation in debt. Cycle of corruption & money laundering is a sordid tale of our pol elite.”

He further blamed the “ruling elites” for coming into power and making money to purchase decision-makers, bureaucrats and the media to “consolidate their power and rob nation’s wealth.

He further added that they spend money to come to power and then use this political power to make money to purchase bureaucrats, media & other decision-makers to consolidate their power & rob nation’s wealth – money laundering it into offshore accounts, foreign assets and palatial residences abroad.

Pakistan Democratic Movement wanted to protect a “corruption-friendly” system, he added.

In another tweet, PM Imran wrote, “This is what the PDM cabal wants to now protect by supporting a corruption-friendly system. We are determined to stop this cycle of corruption & money laundering that is debilitating the nation.

It is pertinent to mention here that the video that surfaced on media today exposed the horse-trading during Senate elections in 2018 by PTI party lawmakers who could be seen as counting bundles of currencies and hiding it inside the bag.

The lawmakers had been ousted from the political party by the central leadership after holding a thorough investigation.

According to the report MPAs in Islamabad participated in the 2018 Senate elections with Rs 38 million. Whereas six PTI MPAs in Peshawar participated in horse trading by taking Rs 40 Million for each vote in the Senate Elections 2018.

Will ban of Rs5000 note help tackle widespread corruption, tax evasion?

Rs5000 Note ban

Banning Rs5000 currency note in Pakistan has been the most discussed debate to avoid bankruptcy and help improve the economy and banking sector. The ban will also help end bribery in the country.

However, in this regard, renowned business tycoon Aqeel Karim Dhedhi highlighted his views over banning Rs5000 note.

In a detailed discussion in BOL News’ talk-show Abb Baat Hogi with Faysal Aziz Khan, Aqeel Karim said that instead of banning, the government should focus on improving the corrupt system of Pakistan.

He further added that the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) should take immediate steps to end corruption and bribery rather than banning the currency note.

The business tycoon said that there is no such thing that corruption only stands with the higher currency, it all depends over the corrupt system.

Further in his discussion with the host, Aqeel Karim asked whether Pakistan plans to work in Dollars or Euros or the business community would face challenges with the currency loss.

Somehow the move can help stabilize Pakistan’s existing problems but if the move is taken suddenly then it can also lead to chaos, he added more.

Earlier, former FBR chairman Shabbar Zaidi believes that the government should go for the demonetization of the Rs5000 note from July onwards.

“5000 Rupee Notes. Demonetize from July 1, 2021. Announce two months earlier,” said Zaidi in a tweet. The accountant said that in order to go through with the demonetization the government should announce a “transition” period so that the plan goes smoothly.

He had also suggested that those hoarding gold in lockers should have to inform the government if bullion is being held and the government should also monitor bullion trading.
