Famous Pakistani filmmaker Nadeem Baig has expressed grave doubts regarding the accuracy of award shows in the entertainment industry.

In a recent episode of Say It All with Iffat Omar, Baig discussed his displeasure with the way awards are given out, bringing up a surprising victory from a recent event.

Baig mentioned that veteran actor Naumaan Ijaz lost out on the Best Actor award to YouTube sensation Arsalan Naseer. “For instance, in front of Naumaan Ijaz, Arsalan Naseer, who just entered the industry through YouTube, he gets an award for Best Actor. I’m sorry, this surprises me,” Baig commented.

He further criticized the structure of such awards shows in Pakistan, saying, “Actually, such awards don’t exist in Pakistan. There is one award for fashion, and they have to include the film and TV category so that they have good attendance and good faces sitting in the front row.”

Baig also called it “very unfair” to put actors like Saba Hamid and Sajal Aly in the same category, questioning its fairness.

He went on to express doubts about the voting process, adding, “When the public is voting, it can be hacked. You can hire 500 people to vote… At the end of the day, what happens is that you receive a surprise there that leaves you stunned.”

Baig humorously began by sharing that Aly prefers specific feedback rather than general compliments about her acting, particularly when receiving praise. “Sajal doesn’t like it when you say that Sajal is just Sajal. She wants details,” the director quipped, sparking laughter.

Baig proceeded to praise Aly’s unique approach, highlighting her vulnerability and underconfidence as captivating aspects of her performances. He also expressed admiration for the star’s natural talent, emphasizing that she doesn’t meticulously plan her acting but rather lets her emotions guide her.

“When it comes to Sajal, I have one thing to say,” stated Baig. “Sajal is the kind of actor who doesn’t plan her acting. She’s vulnerable, she’s underconfident, and that’s the beauty of her performance.” He commended her ability to capture subtle nuances that often go unnoticed by the general public, citing a specific scene where Aly had to respond to another actor’s dialogue.

“There are small things that perhaps the general public may notice,” said Baig, “like in one scene where Asfar says to her, ‘If I come to your place, will all hell be unleashed?’ She just looks at him and says, ‘It is possible.’ The way she said it… One of the very few actors I’ve seen doing this in this country. She’s a gifted and amazing actor.”

Summing up his thoughts on Aly, Baig described her as a “gifted and amazing actor,” showcasing her exceptional skills and leaving a lasting impression on audiences. She further wrote, “Nadeem Bhai and I have only done one project together and had one difference of opinion about the song ‘Lak Hilna’ where we eventually went with his aesthetics, choice of song and the dance steps as I sensed he was unwilling to hold a discussion probably because as a society we have become so intolerant to a difference of opinion especially when it’s a woman. “I am so hurt by how my personality is being misrepresented publicly merely for holding a healthy discussion on set which I believe is a basis to teamwork while in all these years it was never pointed out to me in person.”
