Death toll in Philippines quake rises to 4, with 60 injured

  • Powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake strikes northern Philippine island of Luzon.
  • Interior secretary: Two people killed in Benguet province, one in Abra province, and one in another province.
  • US Geological Survey data:. Quake struck about 11 kilometres (six miles) southeast of Dolores. Abra is a landlocked province in the northern Philippines

MANILA, Philippines – A powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck the northern Philippine island of Luzon on Wednesday, killing four people, damaging buildings, and causing strong tremors in Manila.

According to Interior Secretary Benjamin Abalos, two people were killed in Benguet province, one in Abra province, and one in another province. According to him, sixty people were injured.

According to US Geological Survey data, the quake struck about 11 kilometres (six miles) southeast of Dolores at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres (6 miles).

“Despite the heartbreaking reports of earthquake damage, we are ensuring a prompt response to those in need and affected by this calamity,” President Ferdinand Marcos Jr said on Facebook.

Strong aftershocks were expected, according to Renato Solidum, director of the state seismology agency.

“The focus is on Abra and neighbouring provinces. This is a significant earthquake “said Solidum.

According to Abalos, 173 buildings were damaged and 58 landslides were reported in Abra province, with 44 of the 60 people injured.

A hospital in Abra province was evacuated after the building partially collapsed, but no casualties were reported, according to officials.

Joy Bernos, Abra’s vice governor, posted photos of the damaged Abra hospital on her Facebook page, showing a gaping hole in its facade.

Other images showed hospital beds, including one with a patient, being wheeled across a road and hospital staff being evacuated.

Aftershocks
Abra is a landlocked province in the northern Philippines that is home to nearly 250,000 people. It is surrounded by rugged mountains and has deep valleys and sloping hills.

The Philippines is vulnerable to natural disasters and is located on the seismically active Pacific “Ring of Fire,” a band of volcanoes and fault lines that arcs around the Pacific Ocean’s edge. Earthquakes are common, and there are 20 typhoons on average each year, some of which cause deadly landslides.

Eric Singson, a congressman from the northern province of Ilocos Sur, told DZMM radio station that the quake was felt strongly there and lasted 30 seconds or more.

“I thought my house was going to collapse,” Singson said. “Now we’re attempting to reach out to people…. We are currently outside our home due to aftershocks.”

The quake damaged heritage buildings in Vigan, a city on the west coast of Luzon known for its old Spanish colonial architecture.

Edison Adducul, a tourist, told radio that he was photographing the Bantay Church Bell Tower in Vigan when the earthquake struck, shaking the tower for up to three minutes.

Senator Imee Marcos stated that several churches had been damaged.

“The Bantay Bell Tower’s antique bricks and coral stones fell down,” she explained.

The quake was felt in Manila as well, where several buildings were evacuated and some people were forced to flee from the 30th floor of one building, and the city’s metro rail systems were shut down during rush hour.

Philippine President Marcos Jr praises rule of dictator father

Marcos Jr
  • Marcos Jr takes the oath in a public ceremony at the National Museum in Manila.
  • He succeeds the hugely popular Rodrigo Duterte, who gained international infamy for his deadly drug war.
  •  Marcos Jr was swept to power with the help of a massive social media disinformation campaign.

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr praised his dictator father’s rule, After being sworn in as the country’s new leader on Thursday, completing a decades-long effort to restore the clan to the country’s highest office.

Last month’s elections were won by Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr, 64, by a landslide, securing the biggest victory since his father and namesake was deposed by a popular revolt in 1986.

He succeeds the hugely popular Rodrigo Duterte, who gained international infamy for his deadly drug war and has threatened to kill suspected dealers after he leaves office.

In the last act of reviving the family brand, Marcos Jr took the oath in a public ceremony at the National Museum in Manila in front of hundreds of diplomats, dignitaries and supporters.

With his 92-year-old mother Imelda sitting metres away, Marcos Jr praised the late patriarch’s regime, which critics describe as a dark period of human rights abuses and corruption that left the country impoverished.

“I once knew a man who saw what little had been achieved since independence… but he got it done,” Marcos Jr said after being sworn into office, claiming his father built more roads and produced more rice than his predecessors.

“So will it be with his son. You will get no excuses from me.”

Ahead of the swearing-in, Duterte received Marcos Jr at the riverside Malacanang presidential palace — which the Marcos family fled into exile 36 years ago.

Duterte, 77, wore a mask and a traditional formal shirt, characteristically unbuttoned at the top and with sleeves rolled up, for the meeting with Marcos Jr, who he once described as “weak”.

The ceremony comes days after the Supreme Court dismissed final attempts to have Marcos Jr disqualified from the election and prevent him taking office.

As rising prices squeeze an economy already ravaged by Covid-19, Marcos Jr has made tackling inflation, boosting growth and ramping up food production his priorities.

He has taken the rare step of appointing himself an agriculture secretary to lead the overhaul of the problem-plagued sector.

Marcos Jr has also pledged to defend the Philippines’ rights to the disputed South China Sea, which Beijing claims almost entirely.

He promised Thursday that “we will go very far under my watch” — but has offered scant detail on how he will achieve his goals and few hints about his leadership style after largely shunning media interviews.

Marcos Jr, who appears to be more polite and businesslike than Duterte, was swept to power with the help of a massive social media disinformation campaign.

Pro-Marcos groups bombarded Filipinos with fake or misleading posts portraying the family in a positive light while ignoring the brutality and theft of billions of dollars from state coffers during the patriarch’s 20-year rule.

Crucial to Marcos Jr’s success was an alliance with Duterte’s daughter Sara, who secured the vice-presidential post with more votes than him, and the backing of rival dynasties.

Many expect Marcos Jr will be less violent and more predictable than the elder Duterte, but activists and clergy fear he could use his victory to entrench himself in power.

“Marcos Jr’s refusal to recognize the abuses and wrongdoings of the past, in fact lauding the dictatorship as ‘golden years’, makes him very likely to continue its dark legacy during his term,” leftist alliance Bayan warned.

Marcos Jr, who previously distanced himself from his father’s rule but not criticised it, last month pledged to “always strive to perfection”.

‘Shoot them dead’: Philippine president Duterte in his own words

Philippine president
  • Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte was known for his foul-mouthed tirades, vulgar jokes, and threats to kill people.
  • His remarks were directed at everyone from drug users and critics to world leaders and even God.
  •  Philippine President-elect Rodrigo Duterte endorses the killing of corrupt journalists.

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, who step down on Thursday, was notorious for his foul-mouthed tirades, vulgar jokes, and threats to kill people.

His unfiltered remarks were directed at everyone from drug users and critics to world leaders and even God, but he remained popular among Filipinos fed up with out-of-touch politicians and corruption.

Here are some of his quotes since taking power in 2016:

“Hitler massacred three million Jews. Now there are three million drug addicts (in the Philippines). I’d be happy to slaughter them.”

On September 30, 2016, Duterte likens his deadly crackdown on drug users to Hitler’s efforts to exterminate Jews, although vastly underestimating the number of people killed in the Holocaust by the Nazi leader’s regime.

“If you know of any addicts, go ahead and kill them yourself as getting their parents to do it would be too painful.”

Hours after being sworn into office on June 30, 2016, Duterte visits a dockside slum and urges Filipinos to kill drug users.

“Who is this stupid God? This son of a whore is really stupid in that sense. You created something perfect and then you think of an event that would tempt and destroy the quality of your work.”

Taking aim at the biblical creation story, Duterte questions why God would create Adam and Eve and then expose them to temptation on June 22, 2018.

Shoot them dead

“My orders are to the police and military, also village officials, that if there is trouble or the situation arises that people fight and your lives are on the line, shoot them dead.”

On April 1, 2020, Duterte issues a shoot-to-kill order against coronavirus lockdown troublemakers after a protest over food aid.

Philippine Air Force plane crash: at least 45 dead

plane crash

A Philippine air force C-130 plane carrying combat troops tasked to fight Muslim insurgents crashed and exploded while landing in the country’s south on Sunday, killing at least 42 army personnel on board and three civilians on the ground in one of the air force’s deadliest catastrophes.

Military sources said at least 49 other soldiers were injured but survived the horrific noontime crash into a coconut grove outside the Jolo airport in the Sulu region, including some who managed to jump off the plane before it exploded and was consumed by fire. Three of the seven villagers who were killed when they were hit on the ground died.

The plane had 96 people on board, including three pilots and five crew members, with the rest being army personnel, according to the military, with only five soldiers still missing as of late Sunday. Officials stated the pilots survived but were critically hurt.

The Lockheed C-130 Hercules was one of two ex-US Air Force planes handed over to the Philippines this year as part of military aid.

The plane left Manila with only a few passengers, including Romeo Brawner Jr., a two-star Army general who disembarked with his wife and three children in Cagayan de Oro City, where he will take over as the next military regional commander on Monday. In Cagayan de Oro, the army men boarded the C-130 for the flight to Sulu.

Brawner was shocked when he learned the jet he’d just flown on had crashed.

“We’re very thankful that we were spared but extremely sad that so many lost their lives,” Brawner said.

Officials said the jet was bringing troops from the southern city of Cagayan de Oro to Sulu, many of them were rookie soldiers who had just completed basic training.
