LEAs foil major terror attack at Punjab-KP border

Dera Ghazi Khan: The terrorist attack on Lakhani check post in Dera Ghazi Khan at Punjab-Khyber Pakhtunkhwa border was successfully thwarted by the law enforcement agencies(LEAs).

According to the police, terrorists attacked the Lakhani check post on the Punjab and KP border in Dera Ghazi Khan late at night.

Police officials say that more than 25 terrorists attacked the check post with rockets and grenades.

According to the police, there was no loss of life in the attack of the terrorists, while the terrorists escaped on retaliatory action.

The spokesperson of Punjab Police said that the terrorists used heavy weapons including rockets, hand grenades, however, the police personnel immediately retaliated by firing with machine guns and mortars.

Police, Elite Force, Rangers and Counter Terrorism Department jointly confronted the terrorists and as a result of effective retaliatory action, the terrorists escaped with heavy casualties.

The spokesman said that all the check posts on Khyber Pakhtunkhwa border were already on high alert.  IG Punjab praised DG Khan police for repelling the terrorist attack.

President calls for enhancing capacity of LEAs in Balochistan

GWADAR: President Asif Ali Zardari called for enhancing the capacity of the Law Enforcement Agencies (LEAs), posting competent officers in Balochistan, and improving the prosecution mechanism to effectively counter terrorist elements in Balochistan.

The president expressed these views while chairing a meeting on the security/law and order situation in Balochistan, in Gwadar, on Thursday.

Minister for Interior, Mohsin Raza Naqvi, Chief Minister Balochistan, Mir Sarfraz Ahmed Bugti, senior civil and military officials attended the meeting.

The president was briefed about the overall security situation of the province as well as the role of LEAs in successfully countering terrorist attacks in various districts of Balochistan.

It was informed that the provincial government had adopted a targeted approach to improve the security and law-and-order situation in Balochistan.

It was further apprised that the initiatives taken by the LEAs had resulted in improving the security situation in the province. The president was informed that the provincial government was taking steps to provide fool-proof security to Chinese and foreign nationals.

He appreciated the efforts of the provincial government as well as the sacrifices of the LEAs in combatting terrorism.

The president emphasized that the prosecution system needed to be improved so that the terrorist elements could not escape justice.

He said that compensation for the families of martyrs of LEAs in Balochistan should be enhanced bringing it at par with the rest of the provinces.

Underlining the need to improve the socio-economic condition of Balochistan, the President called for focusing on the skill development of its people and producing more skilled professionals.

He said that the capacity of training institutions should be enhanced to produce more trained human resources and equip them with foreign language skills that would also help them find jobs in foreign countries.

The president also called for promoting the fishing industry of Balochistan by providing financing and equipment to local fishermen, apart from promoting sustainable fishing practices and checking the production of illegal fishing nets.

During the meeting, the president said that political dialogue was the way forward to bring prosperity, development and peace to Balochistan.

ISLAMABAD: A task force consisting of law enforcement agencies (LEAs) and intelligence agencies has been formed for decisive action against the gold mafia and smugglers.

According to the sources, a major crackdown was initiated against the gold mafia by the task force.

Sources say that the task force has prepared lists of gold smuggling mafias and smugglers while work has been started to bring gold dealers into the tax net.

The government is working on policies to bring gold dealers into the tax net.

A computerized system is being developed to record and monitor gold buying and selling transactions to regularize the gold trade and increase transparency in it. These measures will not only benefit the citizens but also improve the economic situation of the country.

It should be noted that the price of gold is already falling in the market.
