Jadon Sancho Responds To Racist Abuse After Euro 2020 Defeat

Jadon Sancho

After stating that he witnessed racial insults directed at him following the Euro 2020 final defeat to Italy, Jadon Sancho said that “hate will never win.”

Jadon Sancho, along with Marcus Rashford and Bukayo Saka, was one of three England players to miss penalties in the shootout on Sunday night.

The three players were subjected to racist abuse on their social media accounts in the aftermath of the loss.

Sancho reflected on the events of the penalty he failed to convert and the tournament experience on Instagram.

“I’ve had a couple of days to reflect on Sunday’s final and still feel a mix of emotions,” he began.

“I would like to say sorry to all my teammates, coaching staff and most of all the fans who I let down. This is by far the worst feeling I’ve felt in my career. It’s hard to even put into words the real feeling, but there were so many positives to take away from this tournament though the defeat will hurt for a long time. My first thought before going into any football match is always “How can I help my team?, how am I going to assist ? how am I going to score ? how am I going to create chances ? And that’s exactly what I wanted to do with that penalty, help the team. I was ready and confident to take it, these are the moment’s you dream of as a kid, it is why I play football. These are the pressured situations you want to be under as a footballer. I’ve scored penalties before at club level, I’ve practiced them countless times for both club and country so I picked my corner but it just wasn’t meant to be this time.

We all had the same ambitions and objectives. We wanted to bring the trophy home.

This has been one of the most enjoyable camps I’ve been part of in my career so far, the togetherness of the team has been unmatched, a real family on and off the pitch.”

https://www.instagram.com/p/CRUDpOOMQqE/?utm_source=ig_embed&ig_rid=89ba1850-8dc1-4a54-ad3f-48800b34ed7e

The Borussia Dortmund forward, who is set to join Manchester United this summer, spoke out about the abuse he received with his national teammates. “I’m not going pretend that I didn’t see the racial abuse that me and my brothers Marcus and Bukayo received after the game, but sadly it’s nothing new. As a society we need to do better, and hold these people accountable.

“Hate will never win. To all the young people who have received similar abuse, hold your heads up high and keep chasing the dream. I am proud of this England team and how we have united the whole nation in what has been a difficult 18 months for so many people. Much as we wanted to win the tournament, we will build and learn from this experience going forward. I want to say a massive thank you for all the positive messages and love and support that far outweighed the negative. It’s been an honor as always representing England and wearing the Three Lions shirt, and I have no doubt we’ll be back even stronger! Stay safe & see you soon.”

Tokyo Olympics 2020: Athletes will put on their own medals

Tokyo Olympics

To prevent the coronavirus from spreading at the Tokyo Olympics, athletes will wear their medals around their necks themsleves.

International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach announced the “very significant change” to traditional medal presentations in the 339 events on Wednesday.

“The medals will not be given around the neck,” Bach told international media on a conference call from Tokyo. “They will be presented to the athlete on a tray and then the athlete will take the medal him or herself.”

“It will be made sure that the person who will put the medal on tray will do so only with disinfected gloves so that the athlete can be sure that nobody touched them before,” Bach added.

The Olympic practice differs from that of European football, where UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has personally draped medals over the necks of players at recent championship finals.

At the Euro 2020 medal and trophy ceremony in London on Sunday, Ceferin shook hands with Italy’s star goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. In a penalty shootout, Donnarumma’s save secured Italy’s victory over England.

Bach confirmed on Wednesday that in Tokyo “there will be no shake hands and there will be no hugs there during the ceremony.”

An IOC member or a high-ranking official from a sport’s governing body often presents an Olympic medal.

The International Olympic Committee previously stated that medalists and ceremony officials would be required to wear masks.

The Tokyo Olympics begin on July 23 with the city in a state of emergency due to an increase of COVID-19 cases.

Paul Pogba says he has more ‘freedom’ with France than at Man united

Pogba

Paul Pogba says he enjoys more ‘freedom’ with the national side and admits he wants to play more offensively for Manchester United.

The Frenchman was often played on the left flank by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer last term, though he would sometimes be deployed in a two-man midfield alongside Scott McTominay or Fred.

Paul Pogba was used in a three-man midfield at Juventus which gave him license to get forward but United’s creative play revolves around Bruno Fernandes, meaning Pogba must fit in around the Portuguese playmaker.

And Pogba admits he would prefer to be given more ‘freedom’ at Old Trafford, which he says he enjoys more with the national side.

‘It’s true that at Juve it was different from Manchester United,’ Pogba told the French newspaper L’Equipe.

‘We were already playing with three midfielders [at Juve], in 5-3-2. I had the freedom, I had to be in the box, to attack. It was an obligation. In Manchester, I have the freedom to go into the box, but the priority is to play and defend.”

‘We [France] play in 4-2-3-1, also a diamond. I am a little more in the transmission, in the construction. But I have more freedom than in Manchester to enter the box, to make runs forwards.

‘At the same time, when you have Griezmann, Kylian, you don’t want to enter their spaces, you don’t need to.”

‘I would like [at Manchester United [to play more offensive [laughs]. To score fifteen goals per season is what I would like.

‘But Patrick [Vieira] said it, we must put ourselves at the service of the collective. In Manchester, as in blue, the collective will always come before the player.’

Euro 2020: Czech Republic defeated Scotland 2-0 in their opening game

Euro 2020

Glasgow: Two goals from Patrik Schick helped the Czech Republic beat Scotland in their opening group stage game of Euro 2020.

The Czech Republic earned their first win against Scotland since October 2010, ending a run of one draw and three defeats against the Tartan Army in all competition.

Scotland’s fast-paced start had the Czech Republic on the back foot for the majority of the first half but Schick’s goal sent the visitors in 1-0 up at half-time.

A second goal on the other side of the half-time followed for Schick, who remarkably curled a long-range lofted effort over Scottish goalkeeper Marshall from near the halfway line to extend the visitor’s lead.

Sykes, Armstrong, and Robertson all tested the Czech shot-stopper Vaclik, however, the hosts fall to a 2-0 loss in their first game of Euro 2020.

Euro 2020

Paris: With the Covid cloud still casting a shadow over the event, UEFA Euro 2020 will finally get underway tonight.

The European Championship was postponed 12 months ago because of the pandemic.

The tournament would be held across 11 cities of Europe. With strict health restrictions, Euro 2020 will be played in front of limited crowds.

In-form Italy will take on Turkey in front of 16,000 fans at Rome’s Stadio Olimpico.

Despite some players participating in the content-wide event tested positive for Covid-19, the UEFA president, Aleksander Ceferin has been insisting that the Euro 2020 will be safe.

“It will be the first event of a global dimension to be held since the pandemic struck,” he said.

“It will be the perfect opportunity to show the world that Europe is adapting. Europe is alive and celebrating life. Europe is back.”

Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal are the current holders of the Championship. Standing at 104 goals for Portugal, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner will look to break Ali Daei’s incredible record of 109 goals for Iran.
