The trend of celebrity look-alike competitions, ignited by a Timothée Chalamet-inspired event in New York, has now reached India. On Sunday, cinephiles gathered at Delhi’s Hauz Khas Park for a quirky contest dedicated to Bollywood actor Abhay Deol.
Organized by the Instagram account Films From Underground, the event offered a ₹500 cash prize, three film screening tickets, and two packets of chewing gum.
Dozens of contestants participated, with some recreating Abhay’s iconic moments. One attendee sported a black ‘wifebeater,’ channeling Deol’s recent Instagram photos, while another showed up with a black eye—a nod to the actor’s viral awards show appearance after an altercation with a music company.

Ultimately, a man in a yellow sweater and messy mullet claimed the prize, though not everyone was impressed. “Look away competition,” joked one attendee, while another quipped, “Abhay Deol from Meesho.”
Unlike Chalamet, who made a surprise appearance at his own look-alike contest in Manhattan in October, Deol was absent. Chalamet’s event, however, spiraled into chaos.
“It started off as a silly joke, and now it’s turned pandemonium,” said Paige Nguyen, producer for YouTuber Anthony Po, who staged the event. Police dispersed the crowd and fined organizers $500 for the “unpermitted costume contest.”
