In a recent interview, actor Abhay Deol discussed the cancel culture trends in Bollywood, which have long affected the business. He also made a quick statement regarding the ongoing issue surrounding the Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone movie Pathaan. The actor claimed that the controversy is not “unimaginable” because it has happened before.
On January 25, Siddharth Anand’s film Pathaan will be released. Besharam Rang, the movie’s first song, caused controversy when it was released, and many people at first took issue with Deepika Padukone’s attire, which included one saffron bikini. Since then, a lot of politicians and other people have complained that the movie offended their religious beliefs.

Abhay Deol was approached for his thoughts on the subject before to the January 10 release of the Pathaan trailer. He said, “It is not something unimaginable. If you look at the world today, it is polarised. If you want to make an issue of something, you can easily do it. It is possible. Many people have done it before and will continue to.”
“We do live in a polarised world. I think social media and technology have made information so fast, and it is also disinformation at so many levels. There is this tendency to reduce things to a headline. There is inconsistency everywhere, whether it be the media or people consuming that media. It is a volatile space, and that is an interesting subject, but do I believe in bans and cancel culture? It is more nuanced than that. I think banning doesn’t necessarily make it go away. It (the subject) goes underground,” he also added during the same conversation.
Abhay believes that in 50 years people may laugh at the “stupidity” of the cancel culture trend and look back on it with amusement. John Abraham is another star of Pathaan in addition to Shah Rukh and Deepika.

A video of the Bajrang Dal tearing down Pathaan banners at an Ahmedabad mall recently went popular on social media. It was tweeted by the group and said, “Today in Karnavati Bajrangi washed #पठान (Pathaan), anti-Sanatan Dharma @iamsrk and Tukde gang @deepikapadukone movie will not be allowed to run now. Warned the multiplex, if the movie is released, #बजरंगदल (Bajrang Dal) will show its attitude. Bajrang Dal in honour of ‘Dharma’.”
Abhay’s subsequent appearance will be in the Netflix web series Trial By Fire. The documentary series, which also features Rajshri Deshpande, will debut on January 13.
