ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday said that Pakistan greatly valued its relationship with the European Union which was based on shared values and common objectives of peace, prosperity and development.

The prime minister appreciated the EU’s assistance in the wake of climate-induced massive floods in Pakistan. The prime minister was talking to European Commissioner for Crisis Management Janez Lenarcic who called on him.

Expressing satisfaction at the high-level engagement between the two sides, the prime minister expressed hope that both sides would continue to work together to further enhance their bilateral trade and investment ties, to benefit from the GSP Plus Scheme, post-2023.

He also shared the details of the devastation caused by the floods to crops, housing, livestock, and critical infrastructure, as well as the death of more than sixteen hundred people.

The prime minister underlined that Pakistan while being a negligible contributor to global carbon emissions, was amongst the most vulnerable countries to the impact of climate change.

He expressed the hope that the international community would step up its efforts to mitigate the negative consequences of the floods, through active participation in the rehabilitation and reconstruction phase.

Prime minister Sharif also highlighted the efforts undertaken by the government which included humanitarian response for the people in the affected areas and the establishment of Prime Minister’s Flood Relief Fund-2022, for providing relief and rehabilitation to the affectees of torrential rains.

PM Shehbaz gets permanent exemption to appear in court in money laundering case

LAHORE: The accountability court in Lahore has permanently exempted Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif from appearing in court for the continuation of the money laundering case.

Judge Qamar us Zaman granted the prime minister’s request and directed him to choose a representative to attend court on his behalf.
The court also awarded Hamza Shahbaz, the Opposition Leader in the Punjab Assembly, a one-day reprieve.

The court also requested that the National Accountability Bureau respond to Hamza’s request for permanent exemption from presence.

The FIA filed a challan against the two PML-N leaders in December last year for their alleged participation in the laundering of Rs16 billion in the sugar scam case.

The investigative team “discovered 28 Benami [untitled] accounts of the Shehbaz family through which Rs16.3 billion in money laundering was committed from 2008 to 2018.” It investigated the financial trail of 17,000 credit transactions.

Suleman Shehbaz, who was absconding in the United Kingdom, was arrested with Shehbaz and Hamza in the case. The FIR also named 14 additional people.

LONDON: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Ishaq Dar reached Islamabad on Monday, BOL News reported.

On the advice of Nawaz Sharif, Dar chose to go with the premiere of Pakistan along with his son Ali Dar. Ishaq Dar will take an oath of the posts of Senate and Finance Minister after reaching Pakistan on Tuesday. Ishaq Dar was living in self-imposed exile in London for five years.
Miftah Ismail submitted his resignation during the PML-N leadership meeting in London yesterday.

Ishaq Dar, known as the economic wizard, has been given the task of reducing inflation in Pakistan, controlling the dollar, and developing the economy.

According to the details, Ishaq Dar left Luton Airport along with the staff and vehicles of the Pakistan High Commission.

“We are starting our journey from where we stopped it, ” Ishaq Dar.

As decided, Ishaq Dar will assume charge as the finance minister on Tuesday, September 27 while incumbent Finance Minister Miftah Ismail will remain part of the government.

Nawaz Sharif has expressed his immense displeasure over the economic policies of Miftah Ismail. He also raised concern over the rise in prices of commodities which has directly affected ordinary people and dented the party’s support base.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday met with King Charles III in London and expressed his condolences on Queen Elizabeth II’s passing during the king’s reception for visiting dignitaries.

Hundreds of foreign royals and heads of state have been invited to attend Queen Elizabeth II’s burial, making it one of the most important diplomatic events in decades.

Approximately 500 heads of state and foreign dignitaries, as well as their spouses, are anticipated.

PM Shehbaz Sharif expressed condolences on Charles’s mother’s passing, stating that the late monarch was an inspiration and source of strength for generations of Commonwealth citizens.

The prime minister noted that the people of Pakistan had pleasant recollections of the Queen’s two trips to the country and that the tie between the Royal family and the Pakistani people had only grown stronger over time.

On behalf of the people and government of Pakistan, the Prime Minister congratulated the King of the United Kingdom on his ascension to the throne and expressed hope that he would carry on his mother’s legacy of further enhancing Commonwealth cooperation.

The premier stated that the people of Pakistan held King Charles III in great regard and hoped to welcome him to Pakistan as soon as possible.

SAMARKAND: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif and President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev on Friday expressed their mutual resolve to enhance bilateral cooperation in diverse areas including trade, energy, and defense.

In a meeting held on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization’s (SCO) Heads of State meeting in Samarkand, the two sides also emphasized strengthening the links in the fields of education and people-to-people contacts.

PM Sharif underlined the importance of unlocking the existing potential in the relationship by boosting bilateral engagement in the fields of trade, investment, agriculture, information technology, and tourism.

He expressed his gratitude to Azerbaijan for its support and solidarity with Pakistan as well as the provision of generous financial assistance for the flood-affected people.

He highlighted that the massive natural disaster caused by climate change called for urgent action by the international community to address this global threat.

The prime minister said that Pakistan and Azerbaijan had exemplary relations, deeply embedded in common history, faith, and culture.

He reaffirmed Pakistan’s principled support to Azerbaijan on Nagorno-Karabakh and congratulated on the historic success of the liberation of its occupied territories.

According to sources, the prime minister will embark on a foreign tour, with his first stop in Samarkand for the two-day Shanghai Cooperation Organization meeting on September 15 and 16.

“Shehbaz Sharif will then return to the country and will leave for London on September 18,” they added, adding that the prime minister will meet with political leaders during his visit to London.

During his visit, he may perhaps attend Queen Elizabeth’s funeral.

Later, on September 19, he will go to New York and address the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session on September 23. “After his UNGA presentation, he will return to Pakistan,” they stated.

It is worth noting that on August 25, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif canceled his trip to London due to the country’s flood situation.

SAJAWAL: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday said that the entire country was badly affected by flash floods due to incessant monsoon rains, and resolved to overcome the challenge with collective efforts.

The prime minister said that the heavy downpours in the season had caused human losses, and damaged road and link infrastructure across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Sindh, and Balochistan.

During a visit to review rescue and relief operations in flood-hit areas of Faqirani Jat, Oplano, and others, the prime minister was given a detailed briefing on the situation and the relief efforts. Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah and the federal ministers also accompanied the prime minister.

Speaking on the occasion, the prime minister added that he had witnessed the vast area which was inundated by flood water.

In Swat and Kalam, flash floods had caused human and financial losses, swept away road infrastructure and bridges, and now headed towards Charsadda and Nowshehra posing a severe threat there, he said, adding the district administrations, rescue agencies, and the armed forces had been fully supporting the rescue and relief efforts and evacuating the people to safe places. He said considerable damage was caused to the Munda dam.

The prime minister said in the flood-affected areas, rescue and relief efforts were being carried out. Unfortunately, he said huge losses were witnessed across the country, but with joint and continuous efforts, they would overcome the issues posed by the natural catastrophe.

On the occasion, the prime minister also appreciated the efforts of the chief minister, administration, and the armed forces for their rescue and relief operations in these areas.
