Cops seize enough cocaine to supply New Zealand for 30 years

New Zealand
  • The drugs were floating in the Pacific Ocean.
  • It is more than New Zealand would use in 30 years.
  • The bundle was caught by a naval boat hundreds of kilometers northwest of New Zealand.

WELLINGTON – After snaring a giant bundle of drugs floating in the Pacific Ocean, police claimed Wednesday they had confiscated enough cocaine to supply New Zealand for 30 years.

New Zealand Police Commissioner Andrew Coster told reporters that the haul weighed 3.2 tonnes and had a street value of roughly $316 million.

“This is the largest find of illicit drugs by New Zealand’s agencies by some margin,” he said.

Officials think the pills were dropped in the Pacific Ocean at a “floating transit point,” where they would have been picked up and transported to Australia.

According to a police photo, the large haul was confined by netting and wrapped with yellow floats. Some of the bales bore a Batman symbol, and the cocaine sachets inside bore what seemed to be a four-leaf clover pattern.

“We believe it was destined for Australia, where it would have been enough to service the market for one year,” Coster said.

“It is more than New Zealand would use in 30 years.”

The bundle was caught by a naval boat hundreds of kilometers northwest of New Zealand, thanks in part to intelligence from the “Five Eyes” partnership.

The US, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand are members of the decades-old intelligence-sharing network.

The arrest, according to Coster, was a “huge result” for police in both New Zealand and Australia.

“There is no doubt this discovery lands a major financial blow right from the South American producers through to the distributors of this product,” he added.

Officials said it was too early to say where the drugs came from.

UK Prime Minister Sunak dismisses party chairman Nadhim Zahawi

Prime minister Sunak
  • A major breach of the ministerial code was discovered.
  • An independent adviser was appointed to probe Zahawi’s tax problems.
  • Zahawi had demonstrated insufficient regard for duty.

London: British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak removed Conservative Party chair Nadhim Zahawi from the government on Sunday, citing a major breach of the ministerial code discovered during an examination into his tax problems.

Sunak had appointed an independent adviser to probe Zahawi’s tax problems amid a period of political upheaval in the United Kingdom last year.

According to Zahawi, the British tax authorities determined that he had been “careless” with his filings but had not purposefully created an error in order to pay less tax.

“Following the completion of the Independent Adviser’s investigation, the findings of which he has disclosed with us both,” Sunak wrote to Zahawi.

“As a result, I have informed you of my decision to remove you from your position in His Majesty’s Government.” The independent adviser Laurie Magnus found that Zahawi had been misleading when he said that reports last July over his tax affairs were “clearly smears”.

Zahawi did not amend the record until last week when he stated that he and the authorities had struck an agreement.

“I consider that this delay in correcting an untrue public statement is inconsistent with the requirement for openness,” Magnus said in a letter to Sunak.

He went on to say that Zahawi had demonstrated “insufficient regard” for the duty “to be honest, open, and an outstanding leader via his own behavior.

” “Mr. Zahawi’s conduct as a Minister has fallen short of the high standards that you, as Prime Minister, rightfully expect of those who serve in your government,” he stated.

Ukraine’s deputy foreign minister terms German indecision on Leopard 2 tanks as “disappointment”

deputy foreign minister
  • Melnyk praised the United Kingdom for moving forward with a pledge of Challenger 2 tanks.
  • Melnyk expressed disappointment and hoped that the Berlin government will seriously consider all of the concerns.
  • Ukraine urgently needs these tanks to protect its valiant defenders.

Andriy Melnyk, the deputy foreign minister of Ukraine, lashed out at Germany in an interview for being unsure whether to send its Leopard 2 tanks there.

Isa Soares on Friday, Melnyk praised the United Kingdom for moving forward with a pledge of Challenger 2 tanks, adding that he hoped the move might persuade other nations to follow suit.

Melnyk stated that the UK is the “first nation to deliver Challenger 2 main battle tanks and that might be a trigger, hopefully, for other countries but unfortunately not for Germany yet.” Melnyk went on to say that all Ukrainians are “hugely disappointed” by Germany’s inaction.

Despite mounting pressure from NATO and Kiev to increase its military assistance in advance of a potential Russian spring offensive, Germany has so far been unable to come to an agreement with its major Western allies on sending Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine.

“The government in Germany has not taken this important decision, not only to allow other countries like Poland, Finland, Spain, or Greece, which do have German battle tanks, to do the same, but also to strengthen and create this coalition, which we call the ‘Global Tanks Coalition,’ to help Ukrainian forces drive out the Russians and launch the counteroffensive that will allow us to liberate the occupied territories,” Melnyk said.

‘Disappointed’ Ukraine’s deputy foreign minister

We are disappointed, but since no decision has yet been made, Melnyk continued, “We hope that the Berlin government will seriously consider all of the concerns they heard (on Friday) in Ramstein.”

Ukrainian diplomats are highlighting the urgency of the situation, despite Germany’s denials that it is taking its time.
Prior to Russia launching its anticipated spring offensive, Oksana Markarova, the Ukrainian ambassador to the United States, told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer on Friday that “time is of the essence” in getting Western tanks into Ukraine.

We urgently require these tanks, Markarova said.

The tanks are “immediately required now to protect our valiant defenders. Therefore, we have the ability to move, fire, and actually go on the offensive again in order to counterattack and prevent any further attacks that Russia may plan to launch this spring, according to Markarova.
