Nigerian police rescued dozens of people, many of them children, from a church where they had been told to wait for what they believed would be a divine happening, according to a police statement.

On Friday, police raided the Whole Bible Believers Church in southwestern Ondo State after receiving information that children were being held against their will.

Seventy-seven people including 26 children were rescued and two church pastors were arrested, Ondo State police spokeswoman Funmilayo Odunlami said.

Police said they had been kept in the church after being told they must wait for Rapture, a belief among some Christians that they will ascend to heaven at the end of the world.

Germany signs deal to return Benin bronzes to Nigeria

Benin bronzes
  • Germany has around 1,100 of the 16th- to 18th-century artefacts, split between some 20 museums.
  • Thousands of Benin bronzes are scattered around European museums after being looted by the British.
  • Nigeria plans to build a museum in Benin City in southern Edo state, where it hopes to house them.

Germany signed an agreement on Friday,  to begin sending hundreds of Benin bronzes back to what is now Nigeria, marking the most significant effort by a European country to return the looted artworks.

After Germany announced last year that it would begin returning the bronzes, Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock and Culture Minister Claudia Roth signed the agreement with their Nigerian counterparts in Berlin.

The first two artworks — the head of a king and a plaque depicting three warriors — were on Friday handed over to representatives from Nigeria.

“Today we have reason to celebrate, because we have reached a historic agreement — the Benin bronzes are returning home,” Baerbock said.

“These pieces are not only magnificent artefacts — they are some of Africa’s greatest treasures. But they are also telling a story of colonial violence,” she said.

Thousands of Benin bronzes, metal plaques and sculptures that once decorated the royal palace of the Kingdom of Benin are now scattered around European museums after being looted by the British at the end of the 19th century.

Gunmen attack Nigeria mine, kidnap four Chinese workers

  • Gunmen attack a mine in Niger state, and abduct four Chinese nationals and other workers.
  • Kidnapping for ransom has become a major issue in the northwest and central Nigeria.
  • Nigeria recently listed bandit gangs operating in the northwest as terrorist groups.

Gunmen attacked a mine in central Nigeria on Thursday, killing some security personnel and kidnapping four Chinese nationals and other workers, according to a state security official.

Kidnapping for ransom has become a major issue in northwest and central Nigeria, where heavily armed criminal gangs known as bandits abduct residents, schools, and businesses.

Chinese employees working on mines and large infrastructure projects in remote areas are often targeted for kidnapping and usually released after a short period in captivity.

Gunmen attacked the mine in Ajata Aboki village in Shiroro region of Niger state on Wednesday afternoon, the local commissioner for security, Emmanuel Umar said in a statement.

“A yet to be ascertained number of workers in the mining site, including four Chinese nationals, were reported to have been abducted,” the statement said.

It said some of the attackers were also killed.

“Security forces mobilized reinforcement for the manhunt of the remaining terrorists.”

Umar blamed the attack on “armed bandits/terrorists”. Nigeria recently listed bandit gangs operating in the northwest as terrorist groups, in a move to give the military more flexibility in operations against them.
