Authorities reported on Thursday that bandits on motorbikes killed 32 people and set fire to houses in various villages in Nigeria’s northern Kaduna state on Sunday.

Armed gangs loot or kidnap for ransom in Nigeria’s northwest, and violence is spreading to other parts of the country.

According to a statement from the state’s ministry of internal security and home affairs, the attackers targeted the villages of Dogon Noma, Ungwan Sarki, and Ungwan Maikori.

“An Air Force helicopter… sent to the location had earlier surveyed the first two locations and saw burned residences and properties on fire,” the statement continued.

“Before ground soldiers arrived, the helicopter intercepted the bandits at their last location (Ungwan Maikori) and battled them as they escaped.”

Bandits blew up a train between Kaduna, the state capital, and Abuja, the national capital, killing eight passengers, wounding 26 others, and holding others for ransom.
