Australian man killed by a shark at renowned beach in California

Australian
  • Authorities claim the 59-year-old was swimming around 150m from shore.
  • He suffered significant wounds to his leg and arms.
  • It’s the third shark attack in three weeks near Chateau-Royal Beach.

In the French Pacific territory of New Caledonia, an Australian tourist was killed by a shark in front of shocked witnesses.

Authorities claim the 59-year-old was swimming around 150m (500ft) from shore at a popular beach in Nouméa on Sunday when he was attacked.

He was bitten multiple times and died at the scene, suffering significant wounds to his leg and arms.

It’s the third shark attack in three weeks near Chateau-Royal Beach, California.

Two persons boating close escorted the man back to the beach, where emergency personnel attempted to resuscitate him.

According to local media, many people were in the water at the time and observed the attack, sparking a frightened rush back to shore.

Officials have ordered the capture of sharks in adjacent waters and have blocked most beaches in the vicinity.

On 29 January, a shark in the vicinity gravely damaged a 49-year-old swimmer, and a surfer was also attacked a few days later.

New Caledonia, located south of Vanuatu, is approximately 1,200 kilometers (750 miles) east of Australia.

Despite having a population of only 270,000 people, it ranks 13th in the world for the total number of shark attacks, according to the Florida Museum of Natural History, which has been keeping track since 1958.

  • The street in question is a residential street lined with ranch-style one-story residences.

Los Angeles: A Roman Catholic bishop in Southern California was found dead Saturday of a gunshot wound.

Bishop David O’Connell was discovered in Hacienda Heights at 1 p.m., according to the sources.

Homicide detectives responded to “a shooting death investigation,” according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. At the location, a male adult victim was discovered and proclaimed dead.

The street in question is a residential street lined with ranch-style one-story residences.

Los Angeles Archbishop José H. Gomez announced the death, stating O’Connell, a priest and later a bishop in the city for 45 years, “passed away unexpectedly.”

“It is a shock and I have no words to express my sadness,” Gomez said in a statement, calling him “a good friend.”

“Bishop Dave was a man of deep prayer who had a great love for Our Blessed Mother,” he said. “He was a peacemaker with a heart for the poor and the immigrant, and he had a passion for building a community where the sanctity and dignity of every human life were honored and protected.”

Hacienda Heights is an unincorporated community about 30 kilometers east of downtown Los Angeles.

US man to be executed over killing of mother, her three children

US
  • Leonard Taylor man murdered his girlfriend and her three children in 2004.
  • He is slated to be executed by lethal injection at the Potosi State Penitentiary in the United States Midwest.
  • Missouri Governor Mike Parson denied his clemency plea.

WASHINGTON – The Missouri state government plans to execute a man sentenced to death for the 2004 murder of his girlfriend and her three children, which he denies.

Leonard Taylor, 58, is slated to be executed by lethal injection at the Potosi State Penitentiary in the United States Midwest.

In 2008, he was condemned to death for the murders of Angela Rowe and her three children, ages 10, six, and five.

On December 3, 2004, they were discovered dead in their home, each with a bullet in the head. They had been dead for several days, according to the forensic doctors.

Taylor has always claimed that they were still alive on November 26, when he flew to California from his home in Jennings, Missouri.

Prosecutors said he confessed to his brother about the murders and made his pistol disappear in front of a witness during the trial, and jurors found him guilty.

He has made countless failed attempts to cleanse his identity since then.

Denied his clemency plea

Also on Monday, Missouri Governor Mike Parson denied his clemency plea.

“Taylor committed these atrocities, according to the evidence, and a jury found him guilty. Taylor’s convictions have been regularly upheld by courts “In a statement, the Republican governor said.

According to the Innocence Project, which works for justice and defends Taylor, the brother’s evidence was obtained under pressure and he later recanted.

His lawyers recently submitted the testimony of his daughter, who says that her father was in California with her at the time of the killings, but they were unable to reopen the case.

They filed a last appeal with the United States Supreme Court on Tuesday, which is anticipated to rule soon.

If he does not stay the execution, Taylor will be the fifth death row inmate executed since January 1 in the United States.

California: New US air search for missing actor Julian Sands

California
  • Police have resumed an aerial search.
  • Julian Sands disappeared on January 1.
  • Mr. Sands had gone missing while hiking.

California: Police in California have resumed an aerial search for missing British actor Julian Sands.

Previous efforts were hampered by inclement weather as the US state was hit by deadly storms.

Since his disappearance on January 13, there has been no sign of the 65-year-old.

Mr. Sands had gone missing while hiking in the Baldy Bowl area of the San Gabriel Mountains, north of Los Angeles.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s department tweeted that it would use a helicopter from the California Highway Patrol which carries a device that can detect matching “reflective material, electronics, and in some cases, credit cards”.

It went on to say that using the RECCO machine could help police “pinpoint an area where we can arrest people.”

The sheriff’s department announced on Wednesday that a second hiker who had gone missing in the same area had been found alive.

Local media identified him as Jin Chung, 75, of Los Angeles.

Mr. Chung had been missing for about 48 hours and had suffered “weather-related injuries and a leg injury,” according to the sheriff’s department.

For the past several weeks, local authorities have frequently put out statements urging hikers to avoid hazardous mountainous areas “regardless of precautions taken” saying that the conditions have made it “difficult to deploy resources to that area when a hiker goes missing”.

Avalanches in the area slowed ground search and rescue efforts for Mr. Sands last week.

“I have come to terms with the fact he’s gone and for me, that’s how I’ve dealt with it,” said Mr. Sands, who lives in the English county of North Yorkshire where he, Julian, and their three other brothers grew up.

Police: The Washington State murderer who killed three, shoots himself

Police
  • The gunman called his mother before shooting himself dead.
  • Police received a 911 emergency call hours later from a woman.
  • Murdered made several incriminating statements.

LOS ANGELES — A gunman who killed three people in what US police described as a random attack called his mother before shooting himself dead in the state of Washington on Tuesday.

The upsetting incident came on the heels of two mass shootings in California that left 18 people dead, as the United States grapples with the horror of spiraling gun violence once more.

Yakima police say a man identified as 21-year-old Yakima resident Jarid Haddock shot people in and around a convenience store overnight before fleeing.

Officers conducted a massive manhunt throughout the 100,000-person city, which is located 100 miles (160 kilometers) southeast of Seattle, warning that the wanted man was armed and dangerous.

“It appears to be a random situation,” Yakima Police Chief Matthew Murray said.

“There was no apparent conflict between the parties. They just walked in and started shooting.”

Police received a 911 emergency call hours later from a woman who claimed the wanted man had borrowed her phone.

“He then called his mother and made several incriminating statements, including, ‘I killed those people,'” Murray said.

“He made several statements in front of her that he was going to commit suicide.”

First responders rushed to the scene near a supermarket, just in time to hear gunshots as he committed suicide.

“They provided medical care and attempted to save his life, but he was later pronounced dead.”

The shooting in Yakima was the latest spasm of gun violence to shake the United States.

On Monday, seven people died at two agricultural sites south of San Francisco when a Chinese-American farmworker is believed to have opened fire on his colleagues.

California: Suspect detained following another mass shooting

California
  • State mourns the deaths of 11 people during Lunar New Year celebrations in Monterey Park.
  • All of the victims were Chinese-American farm workers.
  • Suspect Zhao Chunli, 67, was apprehended after driving to the police station.

California is reeling from its second mass shooting in as many days after a man shot and killed seven former coworkers south of San Francisco.

The attacks occurred in the coastal town of Half Moon Bay. All of the victims were Chinese-American farm workers.

Zhao Chunli, 67, was apprehended after driving to the police station.

It comes as the state mourns the deaths of 11 people during Lunar New Year celebrations in Monterey Park, about six hours south of Half Moon Bay.

California Governor Gavin Newsom tweeted that he was at a hospital meeting with victims of the previous mass shooting when he was pulled aside to be briefed on the second attack, which he described as “tragedy upon tragedy.”

The most recent bloodshed in the state occurred on two farms near Half Moon Bay.

Mass shooting victims

Four of the shooting victims were discovered at a mushroom farm, while the other three were later discovered at a nearby trucking company. An eighth victim is in critical condition and is being treated in a hospital.

According to San Mateo County Sheriff Christina Corpus, the attack was witnessed by a number of children who had recently been released from school and lived on the rural property.

“This kind of shooting is horrific. It’s a tragedy we hear about all too often, but it hit close to home today in San Mateo County “According to the office.

“It’s indescribable for children to witness this.”

Following the killings, the suspect drove to a nearby police station, where his arrest was captured on video.

Zhao Chunli was pinned to the ground and arrested by police, according to US news outlets.

Sheriff Corpus said he was found with a semi-automatic pistol that may have been used in the attack and was cooperating with police.

The attacks were carried out by a “disgruntled worker,” according to San Mateo County Board of Supervisors President Dave Pine.

“Today’s tragedy in Half Moon Bay sickens us,” Mr. Pine said in a statement. “There are simply too many guns in this country, and something must be done.”

Seven people were injured and one person was killed in a shooting in Oakland, about 40 miles (64 kilometers) northeast of Half Moon Bay.

According to the US non-profit Gun Violence Archive, the Half Moon Bay attack is the 37th mass shooting in just 24 days.

A mass shooting is defined as four or more people being injured or killed.

Even as information about the deadly attack in Half Moon Bay became available, detectives in the state’s south were still looking for a motive for the killings in Monterey Park.

In a suburban dance hall, an elderly Asian immigrant murdered 11 people before killing himself as police closed in.

A 26-Year-Old Man saves lives attacking Monterey Park Shooter

Monterey Park
  • Brandon Tsay lunged at the shooter and snatched his handgun.
  • “Something came over me,” Brandon Tsay told.
  • “I needed to take this weapon, disarm him, or else everybody would have died”, he further added.

In the predominantly Asian American city of Monterey Park, California, on the eve of the Lunar New Year, a shooter opened fire on Star Ballroom Dance Studio, killing 11 people and injuring another 10.

If not for the acts of a 26-year-old guy at a second dancing class in nearby Alhambra, where the suspect went after the shooting at Star Ballroom, the death toll may have been significantly higher.

When the shooter entered the building, Brandon Tsay, whose family runs Lai Lai Ballroom & Studio, lunged at him and snatched the semiautomatic handgun out of his hands.

Tsay claimed in a GMA interview that he was watching the ballroom dancers when he heard the front door close and the sound of metal clinking together as the suspect reloaded his gun.

Tsay looked back and noticed the shooter. “”My first thought was I was gonna die here,” he said.

Tsay told the New York Times that the suspect’s appearance and the weapon he was holding led him to believe that the man was looking for targets.

Tsay said of the weapon, “From his body language, his facial expression, his eyes, he was looking for people”.

A heated battle between them is captured on security footage when he lunged at the gunman and snatched the gun. Tsay told GMA that after being struck in the face and on the back of his head by the suspect, he was still able to grab the gun from the gunman and direct it at the suspect.

The man stood there “contemplating whether to fight or to run away,” Tsay claimed when he had expected him to escape.

Tsay remarked,”I really thought I would have to shoot him if he came at me, “This is when he turned around and walked out the door.”

The shooter was allegedly disarmed with the assistance of two men, however, CCTV footage shows Tsay tussling with the suspect by himself. The unknown is the identity of the second person police were referring to.

Tsay, a computer programmer who spends a few days each week at Lai Lai’s ticketing counter, expressed disbelief at the encounter.

“I was shaking all night. I couldn’t believe what happened,” he said. “After waking up, I noticed there was bruising over my body. My face has a bruise across the nose, and the back of my head has some bruising.”

The community is in shock following the tragedy on Saturday night. According to statistics provided by the city, more than 65% of the population of Monterey Park, which is renowned as America’s first suburban Chinatown, is Asian.

When families join together for a reunion supper on the night of the Lunar New Year, it is an important moment for the celebrations. Monterey Park hosted a New Year’s event for locals earlier that day.

Huu Can Tran, 72, who was confirmed as the shooter, was a frequent visitor to Star Ballroom, according to his ex-wife, who spoke to CNN. Although Tran remained at large the next day, he was discovered dead on Sunday after a self-inflicted gunshot wound when police approached his vehicle in Torrance, a city located approximately 30 miles from Monterey Park.

Initially, police reported that the incident had claimed the lives of 10. One of the four injured patients being treated at LAC + USC Medical Center on Monday had “succumbed to their serious injuries,” the hospital said in a statement.

Witnesses to the shooting at Star Ballroom have provided frightening tales of what happened.

Two pals of a woman named Shally who gave her name to ABC7 had passed away that evening.

When the shooter entered the room and started firing, Shally was dancing with her longtime dance partner and friend. Together, they ducked under a table.

Shally claimed that she attempted to awaken her dance partner after the shooter had fled. He had been shot in the back and had passed away, she realised when she noticed her hands stained with blood.

After the initial exchange of gunfire, Shally claimed she believed the incident was finished, but the shooter reloaded and kept firing.

She informed ABC7 that the Asian man who was her dance partner was a friend of her husband and was 62 years old. For the previous eight to ten years, they had gone out dancing once a week.

One of those killed was Ming Wei Ma, the proprietor and dance instructor of Star Ballroom, according to witnesses.

“Mr. Ma, who is very beloved and respected in the dance community and he’s been doing that for over 20 years,” his friend Eric Chen told. “He was trying to stop the shooter and he passed away.”

California: Suspect kills himself after Lunar New Year massacre

Lunar New Year
  • Shooting during the Chinese Lunar New Year festival.
  • Ballroom dance venue popular with older patrons.
  • The shooter later kills himself when approached by police.

A 72-year-old gunman killed himself when approached by police on Sunday, about 12 hours after carrying out a Lunar New Year massacre at a dance club that killed ten people and injured ten more.

The gunman attempted to carry out another shooting at a different club just minutes after the first one on Saturday night, but two bystanders wrestled the man’s weapon away from him before any shots could be fired, according to authorities. He fled the scene.

Huu Can Tran, a septuagenarian who used a high-capacity magazine pistol to shoot up a ballroom dance venue popular with older patrons in Monterey Park, about 7 miles (11 km) east of downtown Los Angeles, was identified as the suspect by Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna.

Although gun violence is common in the United States, investigators did not know what motivated the shooting. Luna did not identify the victims but said the five men and five women were in their 50s, 60s, and older. According to the sheriff, Tran’s pistol appeared to be illegal in California, where state laws prohibit any magazine holding more than 10 rounds.

“We want to know how something this terrible can happen,” Luna told reporters.

According to the sheriff, Tran pulled a handgun on himself as police approached a white van he was driving in Torrance, about 20 miles (34 kilometers) from the shooting at the Star Ballroom Dance Studio in Monterey Park. Officers approached the van and heard a single gunshot, then fell back and requested a SWAT team.

Multiple casualties reported in Los Angeles area shooting – Police respond

Los Angeles
  • Shooting at the location of the Chinese Lunar New Year festival.
  • Unclear how many were killed or injured, or if the suspect is in custody.
  • Social media footage shows emergency workers treating victims.

Los Angeles: On Saturday night, police were called to a shooting in Monterey Park, California, where multiple people were killed, according to the Los Angeles Times, citing a law enforcement source.

According to the newspaper, the shooting occurred after 10 p.m. (0600 GMT) near the site of a Chinese Lunar New Year celebration in Monterey Park.

It was unclear how many people had been hurt or killed, or whether the suspect was still on the loose.

Footage shared on social media showed emergency personnel transporting injured people on stretchers to ambulances. The video showed police guarding cordoned-off streets near the scene of the shooting, which was reported to have occurred at a nightclub.

“Our hearts go out to those who lost loved ones tonight in our neighboring city of Monterey Park, where a mass shooting just occurred,” Los Angeles City Controller Kenneth Mejia tweeted.

Tens of thousands of people had attended the festival earlier in the day.

The LA Times quoted the owner of a nearby restaurant as saying that people who sought shelter in his property told him there was a man with a machine gun in the area.

Seung Won Choi told the newspaper that he believed the shooting took place at a dance club.

Monterey Park is a city in Los Angeles county, around 7 miles (11 km) from downtown Los Angeles.

California: 6 people, including an infant, were killed in a ‘massacre’

were
  • A call of shots was fired shortly after 3:30 a.m. local time.
  • An active shooter was in the area due to the volume of rounds being heard.
  • Responding deputies discovered six casualties.

According to the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office, at least six people were killed in an “early morning massacre” Monday near Goshen, California, including a mother and her 6-month-old baby.

Tulare County officers responded to a call of shots fired shortly after 3:30 a.m. local time Monday, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office, adding that “the reporting party believed an active shooter was in the area due to the volume of rounds being heard.”

Sheriff Mike Boudreaux informed reporters at the scene that responding deputies discovered six casualties, including two in the street and one in the doorway of the home where the gunfire occurred. According to him, the mother, who was 17, and the infant were both shot in the head, and at least one male was transported to the hospital but later pronounced dead.

“We do have family that has been escorted from the scene, we do have survivors,” Boudreaux said, saying investigators had yet to determine how they survived what he said was a “horrific massacre.”

The incident does not appear to be a random act of violence, but may be tied to gang activities, according to the sheriff’s office, which noted that it occurred a week after deputies conducted a narcotics search warrant at the residence.

Tulare County Sheriff’s spokesperson Ashley Schwarm said on Monday evening that while they cannot confirm whether the shooters were members of a cartel, the sheriff believes it was a “cartel-style execution.”

Detectives are looking for at least two suspects, the sheriff’s office said earlier.
