No restriction on Nawaz after 5-year disqualification: PM

Nawaz
  • He hoped that Nawaz Sharif will return by next month.
  • ‘Prime Minister Shehbaz said Nawaz Sharif will face law.
  • He said PML-N supremo will run the election campaign.

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said there was no restriction on Pakistan Muslim League-N supremo Nawaz Sharif to contest the election as he had completed his five-year disqualification period.

“As far as Nawaz Sharif is concerned, that law is in the field now under which the maximum disqualification period is five years. There is no restriction on Nawaz Sharif as he has completed his five-year disqualification,” the prime minister said.

He said the new law promulgated by the Parliament had overwritten the previous law which the Supreme Court has not yet annulled.

“Inshallah, I am sure that he will return by next month… He will face the law. The nation will receive him warmly… He will run the election campaign and all of us will be with him,” he stated.

Commenting about the Supreme Court’s decision on the Supreme Court (Review of Judgments and Orders) Act 2023, the prime minister said the legislature had all the powers of lawmaking.

“This is the first time in the history. I have not seen it happening anywhere in the world that legislation is stopped in anticipation,” he remarked and said the legislation was the job of Parliament, not the Supreme Court.

Regarding the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chief, he said the court would decide his fate as he had no role in that regard.

However, he said the NAB-Niazi nexus victimised him and his family, Nawaz Sharif and his daughter, and sister of Asif Ali Zardari when they were also denied bail.

Contrarily, the PTI government obtained stay orders in the cases of the BRT (Bus Rapid Transit), wheat and sugar scandals.

He told the interviewer that inflation touched 12.5% during the previous government which stood at just 3.5% during Nawaz Sharif’s tenure.

Prime Minister Shehbaz said his government reduced oil prices based on international rates after regular reviews, but had to increase them due to global market fluctuations.

He said the government spent Rs 40-50 billion for distributing free flour during Ramazan to support the poor. Additionally, it also provided cross-subsidy to those consuming up to 200 units of electricity per month.

However, he said, it was unrealistic to expect economic growth amidst incidents like the one on May 9, which was treason against Pakistan, the Pakistan Army, and the Chief of the Army Staff.”

Nawaz Sharif to return next month to lead election campaign: PM

Sharif
  • He would visit London to consult NS on his plan for return.
  • Nawaz Sharif would lead election campaign of his party.
  • He hoped name for post of caretaker PM finalized tomorrow.

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz Quaid Nawaz Sharif would come back to Pakistan next month and face his cases in courts.

The prime minister said after the formation of the caretaker government he would visit London to consult Nawaz Sharif on his plan for return.

Nawaz Sharif would lead the election campaign of his party and would be the next prime minister for the fourth time if the PML-N won the next election, he added.

The prime minister said last night the president signed the advice to dissolve the National Assembly and he had talked with the coalition partners about the caretaker prime minister and the decision in that regard would be made in the next three days.

“Tomorrow we will hopefully finalize a name for the post of caretaker prime minister,” he said, adding he would further consult the matter with the allied parties and Nawaz Sharif.

He said as he had been saying all along he would hand over the government to the caretaker set-up and the Election Commission would decide about the date for new elections.

The Council of Common Interests (CCI) had already approved the new digital census and the election would be held according to it, he added.

“We have followed the Constitution and now the institutions have the responsibility to hold the elections,” he remarked, adding he desired that elections should be held as soon as possible.

Shehbaz pointed out that he led the shortest government of 16 months formed by the coalition parties of various ideologies and thinking.

“We proved to the people that the coalition parties were united for sake of the country. We performed our responsibilities in the best interests of the state.”

He said after his taking charge of office the country faced devastating floods and the government within its limited resources provided timely relief to the people, took steps for their rehabilitation and transparently distributed the aid that came from foreign countries.

The biggest contribution of his government, he said, was that Pakistan was saved from default and for that his government went through a difficult phase of negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

The IMF managing director at one point in a meeting with him in Paris said that no time was left for revival of the  programme but later an agreement was reached for loan of three billion dollars, he recalled.

The PM said in the four years of the previous government, relations with friendly and brotherly countries were damaged and long time friends of Pakistan were alienated.

Saving Pakistan from default biggest success of PDM: PM

PDM
  • He said consultations were underway for interim setup.
  • PM Shehbaz said CEC had mandate to hold elections.
  • He said Nawaz Sharif to be PML-N next PM candidate.

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said that he would write to President Arif Alvi for the dissolution of the National Assembly on Wednesday and that the major collective success of his 16-month government was to save the country from default through the IMF agreement.

The prime minister, in an interview, said as per law, if the president did not take up the summary within 48 hours, it would stand implemented and the Assembly would be dissolved.

Regarding the caretaker set-up, he said that consultations were underway with coalition parties to decide on a neutral interim prime minister who would be acceptable to the people. The decision would be a collective one and after finalizing the names, he would hold the first meeting with Opposition Leader Raja Riaz.

Regarding the new census, Prime Minister Shehbaz stated that the government had fulfilled its constitutional obligation by presenting the census results to the Council of Common Interests (CCI) which approved it unanimously.

He stressed that the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) had the mandate to hold the elections, though all the parties unanimously wanted the elections as early as possible. Any delay in polls was just an assumption at that point, he added.

On the topic of candidates for the next prime minister, he said that he had announced Nawaz Sharif to be his party’s next candidate. He emphasized that the perception of Shehbaz Sharif being the Establishment’s favorite was merely a notion that resulted in nothing.

He emphasized the need for a balance between civil-military relations and urged all Pakistanis to join hands to address critical national issues like poverty, loans, and for achieving self-sufficiency.

Urging for an inclusive approach, he called for all the national institutions to cooperate but by observing their constitutional limits.

He said the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) aimed at economic recovery and progress for Pakistan. The plan – a collaborative effort involving all governments, government bodies, and the army – was anticipated to not only bridge the deficit but also propel the nation towards prosperity and dignity.
