Bangladesh Protests: Hindu Temples, Train Attacked Against Modi’s Visit

On Sunday, hundreds of protesters attacked Hindu temples and train in eastern Bangladesh as violence across the country spread after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Bangladesh.

On Friday, to celebrate 50 years of Bangladesh’s independence, Modi visited the country and left on Saturday after gifting some 1.2 million COVID-19 vaccine shots to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

At least 10 protesters lost their lives in clashes with police during protests organized by several groups against Modi’s visit. The protesters accused the Indian Prime Minister of discriminating against Muslims in India.

Activists of the Hefazat-e-Islam group attack a train on Sunday in the eastern district of Brahmanbaria, in which ten people got sustained injuries.

A police officer said,

“They attacked the train and damaged its engine room and almost all the coaches.”

A Bangladeshi reported Javed Rahim said,

“Brahmanbaria is burning. Various government offices were set on fire indiscriminately. Even the press club was attacked and many injured, including the press club president. We are in extreme fear and feeling really helpless.” Many Hindu temples were also attacked in the town, he said.

Moreover, the protesters all set two buses on fire on Sunday in the western district of Rajshahi, while hundreds of protesters attacked police in Narayanganj with stones.

Hefazat-e-Islam’s organizing secretary Azizul Haque told a rally On Saturday in Chittagong that,

“Police opened fire on our peaceful supporters. We will not let the blood of our brothers go in vain.”
