AKU is trusted partner of Sindh Govt in health and education sector: CM

AKU
  • He said while speaking on the occasion of AKU Founder’s Day.
  • He said Sindh Govt is working closely with AKU in health care.
  • The CM offered heartiest felicitations to the graduates.

KARACHI: Chief Minister Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah has said that Aga Khan University(AKU) has been a trusted partner of Sindh government for  decades but in recent years, the partnership has proven its value like never before.

“At the start of the pandemic, when Pakistan was recording its first cases of the virus, there were so many unknowns, there were so many questions in need of answers at that difficult time, therefore expertise of AKU was invaluable.”

This he said while speaking on the occasion of Agha Khan University Founder’s Day – the 40th Anniversary, and the Convocation of the Class of 2022 at Aga Khan University.

Mr Shah said that AKU has been a trusted and great partner of his government. “At the  start of the pandemic, when Pakistan was recording its first cases of the virus, there were so many unknowns and so many questions in need of answers,” he said and added at that difficult time, the expertise of AKU was invaluable and it was so willing to share its knowledge even in the middle of the night, there was always someone from the University available to assist us.

Murad Shah said that as the case count of COVID-19 rose, and it became clear we needed to provide additional training to our doctors and nurses in caring for seriously ill Covid patients, we naturally turned to AKU.

The CM recalled that throughout the pandemic, his government relied on AKU for data on the spread of the virus and the arrival of new strains.

Murad Shah said that he could recount many more examples of AKU addressing important health and education issues in partnership with the public sector-from increasing access to vaccination in underserved areas of Karachi, to training teachers in rural Sindh.

The CM said he would be working  closely with AKU to bring outstanding health care and education to the people of Sindh and Pakistan.

Hajj 2023: Saudi Arabia opens registration for domestic pilgrims

Saudi Arabia
  • Muslims in Saudi Arabia have until the 10th of Ramadan to register for this year’s Hajj trip.
  • Ramadan, the lunar month of fasting, is set to begin on Thursday.
  • The ministry announced opening electronic registration for Saudi nationals and Muslim.

Muslims in Saudi Arabia have until the 10th of Ramadan to register for this year’s Hajj trip, according to the kingdom’s Ministry of Hajj and Umrah.

The ministry said on Twitter that applications for Hajj by Saudi nationals and foreigners resident in the country who have not previously performed the annual pilgrimage will be accepted until Ramadan 10.

Registration will start the next day for Saudis and expatriate residents who conducted Hajj at least five years ago, until all places are filled, according to the government.

Ramadan, the lunar month of fasting, is set to begin on Thursday.

Registration is done using the website https://localhaj.haj.gov.sa or the Nusuk app.

In January, the ministry announced opening electronic registration for Saudi nationals and Muslim expats living in Saudi Arabia who intend to conduct Hajj this year.

After being permitted to do Hajj, one of Islam’s five essential tasks, domestic pilgrims are chosen at random using an online lottery method.

The ministry has revealed four Hajj plans for domestic pilgrims, with prices ranging from SR3984 to SR11,841.

Domestic pilgrims can also pay Hajj payments for this year’s journey in three installments, rather than all at once, as was previously the case.

The third and final installment is due by 10/10/1444, which is less than two months before the start of the Hajj ceremonies in late June this year.

The monarchy has announced that there would be no restrictions on the number of pilgrims from all over the world for the 2018 Hajj season, overturning prior restrictions imposed in response to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Saudi Arabia has reduced the number of Muslims permitted to undertake Hajj in the last two years in order to avoid the spread of COVID-19.

In the pre-pandemic era, around 2.5 million Muslims would perform Hajj each year.

Muslims who are physically and financially capable of doing Hajj must do it at least once in their lives.

  • The BBMAs 2023 will now take place on November 19, 2023.

The Billboard Music Awards, or BBMAs, will move from being held in the spring to the fall in 2023. The new ceremony date is listed below.

A new date has been set for the Billboard Music Awards. According to Billboard, it has changed from the customary spring time period to a fall time slot.

The BBMAs 2023 will now take place on November 19, 2023. Later, more information regarding the award event will be released. Producers Billboard and Dick Clark Productions revealed the new date today.

Due to this modification, the event will resume at its customary time. The BBMAs were held in December from 1990 to 2006. With the exception of 2020, when they were held in October due to the Covid-19 outbreak, the awards have been presented each May since 2011.

Based on their performances and placements on the Billboard Music Charts, the Billboard Music Awards recognise and honour the biggest and hottest stars in contemporary music. The 2023 BBMAs will present prizes based on how music was listened to by listeners and how that was reflected in the Billboard charts from November 19, 2022, to October 21, 2023. The event will also consider a number of additional aspects, such as how fans engaged with the music, including audio and video streaming. Album and song sales, artist tours, and radio airplay are a few other variables.

The Weeknd and Doja Cat received the most nominations at the BBMAs last year, with 17 and 14, respectively. Olivia Rodrigo, who wrote the song “Driver’s License,” took home seven honours, followed by Kanye West with six. Drake and Justin Bieber each received five trophies, while Taylor Swift received four. BTS won three prizes, more than any other group or pair at the time.

The MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas hosted the 2022 BBMAs on May 15, 2022. Sean “Diddy” Combs served as the program’s host.

Regarding the BBMAs in 2023, just the date has been released so far. Watch this area for additional developments.

Saudi Arabia extended Hajj housing deadline

  • Saudi Arabia has extended Hajj housing deadline.
  • Hajj, one of Islam’s five obligatory duties is set to begin in late June.
  • Saudi Arabia has reduced the number of Muslims permitted to perform the Hajj rites.

According to the Saudi news agency SPA, a Saudi committee in charge of housing Hajj pilgrims in Mecca has extended the deadline for issuing permits for houses to accommodate the faithful until next week.

The panel has advised landlords who are interested in renting out their homes for this purpose to consult with accredited engineering firms.

The committee, which has extended the deadline until the end of the Islamic month of Shaaban later this week, stated that it continues to receive such applications from engineering offices accredited by Mecca’s municipality and civil defence, which will examine the buildings to ensure they meet the required conditions, according to SPA.

As part of the process, the committee has asked landlords who want to rent out their homes to pilgrims to comply with all safety requirements and apply for permits as soon as possible.

Hajj, one of Islam’s five obligatory duties, is set to begin in late June this year in Saudi holy sites.

According to Saudi Arabia, the minimum age for performing this year’s Hajj pilgrimage is 12 years old, as the number of pilgrims will return to pre-pandemic levels.

The Saudi Ministry of Hajj has also stated that Muslims who have not previously performed the pilgrimage will be given priority in registering for this year’s pilgrimage.

The kingdom has stated that there will be no restrictions on the number of pilgrims from around the world for the upcoming Hajj season, reversing previous restrictions imposed in the previous two years as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Saudi Arabia has reduced the number of Muslims permitted to perform the Hajj rites in the last two years in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19. In the pre-pandemic era, approximately 2.5 million Muslims would perform Hajj each year.

China to fully reopen borders to foreigners

China
  • China will resume issuing all types of visas on Wednesday.
  • Prior to the outbreak, areas in China that did not require visas will revert to visa-free admission.
  • Foreigners who obtained visas before March 28, 2020, will be eligible to enter China if their visas have not expired.

China will reopen its borders to foreign tourists for the first time in three years, allowing all sorts of visas to be issued beginning Wednesday.

The elimination of this final cross-border control mechanism implemented to protect against COVID-19 comes after officials declared victory over the virus last month.

Insiders in the tourism business do not anticipate a large flood of visitors or a big boost to the economy in the immediate term. In 2019, overseas tourism receipts contributed to only 0.9% of China’s GDP.

Yet, the resumption of tourist visa issuing is part of Beijing’s larger attempt to normalize two-way travel between China and the rest of the globe, following the withdrawal of its recommendation to people against international travel in January.

Regions of China that did not require visas prior to the pandemic would restore visa-free entrance, the foreign ministry announced on Tuesday. This will cover cruise ships transiting through Shanghai port as well as the southern vacation island of Hainan, a long-time favorite among Russians.

VISA-FREE

Visa-free entry for foreigners from Hong Kong and Macau to China’s most prosperous province, Guangdong, will also be reinstated, which will benefit high-end hotels popular with international business visitors in particular.

“The announcement that China will resume issuing nearly all types of visas for foreigners from tomorrow is positive for Australian businesses whose executives would like to travel to here to visit their China-based teams, customers, and suppliers and to explore new business opportunities in the mainland market,” said Vaughn Barber, chairman of the Australian Chamber of Commerce in China.

Foreign guests are progressively being allowed back into Chinese events, such as the China Development Forum in Beijing later this month and the Shanghai Autoshow in April. The Asian Games, which are held every four years, will also be held in the eastern city of Hangzhou in September after being postponed last year owing to China’s COVID worries.

But, prospective tourists may not arrive in droves right away.

Unfavorable views of China among Western democracies have hardened as a result of concerns about human rights and Beijing’s aggressive foreign policy, as well as reservations about the handling of COVID-19, according to a global study conducted by the Pew Research Center in September.

“In terms of tourism, China is no longer a hotspot destination,” said an executive at China International Travel Services in Beijing, declining to be named due to the sensitivity of the matter.

“Commercially, the wish of foreigners to run events in China also decreased after COVID, because too many things here are impacted by politics which has scared them off.”

GEOPOLITICS

In a further loosening of outbound tourist rules, China added 40 new nations to its list of those that accept group visits, bringing the total to 60.

Nonetheless, Japan, South Korea, Australia, and the United States remain on the list. As Washington and Beijing sparred over topics ranging from Russia and Ukraine to Chinese military posture in the South China Sea, ties between the two countries became stronger.

“It’s common to use tourist visas to come to China on business, but I don’t know how enthusiastic institutional investors will be to do so, after all the drumbeat of scary news,” said Duncan Clark, founder of BDA, a Beijing-based investment consultancy.

Just 115.7 million cross-border journeys were undertaken in and out of China in 2022, with foreigners accounting for only 4.5 million.

In comparison, prior to the implementation of COVID, China recorded 670 million total travels in 2019, with foreigners accounting for 97.7 million.

China declares “victory” over COVID-19 with zero-COVID policy

COVID-19
  • China abruptly abandoned its zero-Covid policy in early December.
  • China recorded only about 80,000 Covid deaths in hospitals in the two months after lifting its limitations.
  • It stated China’s efforts resulted in more than 200 million people receiving medical treatment.

China’s senior officials declared a “decisive triumph” over Covid-19, claiming the world’s lowest fatality rate, although experts have questioned Beijing’s data as the coronovirus tore across the country after mainly being kept at bay for three years.

China abruptly abandoned its zero-Covid policy in early December, with 80% of its 1.4 billion population being infected, a key government expert stated last month.

Though there were widespread stories of filled hospital rooms and mortuaries, China recorded only about 80,000 Covid deaths in hospitals in the two months after lifting its limitations.

Other analysts claim the actual toll was significantly greater, as many patients die at home and doctors were widely known to have been discouraged from reporting Covid as a cause of death.

“With ongoing efforts to optimise Covid-19 prevention and control measures since November 2022, China’s Covid-19 reaction has made a smooth transition in a relatively short time,” China’s Politburo Standing Committee (PSC) stated in a meeting on Thursday.

It stated China’s efforts resulted in more than 200 million people receiving medical treatment, including roughly 800,000 serious cases.

According to official media, leaders warned that while the situation is better, the virus is spreading globally and mutating.

China would boost senior vaccinations and medical product manufacture, the summit said. According to Xinhua, China’s top leadership council, the PSC, asked all areas and agencies to improve medical services.

The remark came weeks before China’s annual legislature session and as regulators try to restore an economy ravaged by three years of Covid restrictions.

After unprecedented demonstrations, China abruptly ended President Xi Jinping’s zero-Covid policy in December, releasing the coronavirus on a population that had been mostly protected since it surfaced in Wuhan in late 2019.

For months, many countries and the WHO have suspected China of underreporting deaths, with some experts forecasting that Covid might kill at least one million Chinese this year.

The government stated the Covid situation was “minimal” after the Chinese New Year, despite concerns that the enormous flow of travellers would cause an outbreak.

The government announced that those pilgrims might register through the portal beginning Wednesday.

China to resume all travel with Hong Kong and Macau

China
  • China announced on Friday that cross-border travel between the mainland, and Hong Kong.
  • Macau would fully resume on February 6.
  • Three border crossings in Hong Kong have not yet been reopened.

China announced on Friday that cross-border travel between the mainland, Hong Kong, and Macau would fully resume on February 6, eliminating current quotas and doing away with the requirement to take the COVID-19 test in order to travel.

The number of customs checkpoints open will increase to pre-pandemic levels, and group travel between China and its two special administrative areas of Hong Kong and Macau will resume, according to a statement on the website of China’s Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office.

There is still a COVID-19 testing requirement and a quota system in place for travellers between the mainland and Hong Kong even after China reopened its borders to the outside world on January 8. Three border crossings in Hong Kong have not yet been reopened.

China made its decision a day after Hong Kong began a promotion push with 500,000 free flights to entice travellers, companies, and investors back to the financial centre following more than three years of strict COVID controls.

In an effort to fend off COVID, Hong Kong was largely closed off behind closed borders for much of the past three years, with required quarantine of up to three weeks for visitors as well as stringent testing and screening.

The ex-colony of Britain adhered strictly to China’s zero-COVID policy until the middle of 2022, at which point it started to progressively relax its regulations.

The majority of Hong Kong’s COVID regulations remained in place until December, however mask use is still required when exercising and students are required to perform daily quick antigen testing.
