KARACHI: Naegleria fowleri claimed the life of a man at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center (JPMC).
Spokesperson JPMC confirmed the death of Muzamil due to Naegleria and added that he was brought to the hospital with a high fever a few days ago.
28-year-old Muzmal was a resident of Defense Phase-4 who took a bath in the swimming pool a few days ago from where he contracted Naegleria. He died during treatment at JPMC.
Family sources said Muzmal took a bath in a private swimming pool a few days ago, after which he developed fever, vomiting, severe headache, and drowsiness. He was shifted to JPMC where he was undergoing treatment and could not survive.
Naegleria fowleri is a brain-eating amoeba that enters through a person’s nose and starts consuming brain tissue. The amoeba loves warm water and can survive in temperatures as high as 46 degrees.
