Ukrainian Parliament has banned Russian war symbols

Russian war symbols

Ukraine’s parliament prohibited the insignia “Z” and “V” used by Russia’s military to advertise its war in Ukraine on Sunday, but agreed to President Volodymyr Zelensky’s request that they be allowed to be used for educational or historical purposes.

An opposition member, Yaroslav Zheleznyak, reported the decision on the Telegram messaging app, stating 313 deputies voted in favour in the 423-member Verkhovna Rada parliament.

Zelensky had vetoed an earlier version of the measure that would have permitted the two marks to be displayed in museums, libraries, scientific works, re-enactments, textbooks, and other places.

In the Russian alphabet, neither of the two letters exists. They have been routinely utilised to promote the conflict’s objectives, particularly on Russian military vehicles and equipment.

Moscow describes its invasion of Ukraine as a “special military operation” to disarm and safeguard its neighbour from fascists. Ukraine and the West deny the Nazi charge and maintain the war is an unjustified act of aggression.

Russia bombarded locations in Ukraine’s east over the weekend, slamming the Donbas and Mykolaiv regions with air strikes and artillery fire.

The new legislation prohibits the formation of non-governmental organisations that use Russian war symbols or undermine Ukraine’s sovereignty.

The Ukrainian parliament also prolonged the country’s martial law for another 90 days, or until August 23.
