More than 300 Mariupol residents have arrived in Zaporizhzhia

Mariupol’s municipal council said 344 refugees landed in Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine, late Wednesday as part of an international humanitarian operation to evacuate as many residents as possible from the war-torn port city.

In a Telegram post on Thursday, the council released numerous brief videos of what appear to be evacuees coming in buses in the dark.

“The majority of them are Mariupol women, children, and the elderly,” the tweet stated. “A United Nations mission and the International Committee of the Red Cross assisted in the evacuation.”

Mariupol is nearly entirely under Russian control, with the Azovstal steelworks complex serving as the last bastion of Ukrainian resistance. According to Ukrainian officials, people are still hiding in the plant’s underground tunnels and bunkers with Ukrainian combatants.
