HMPV cases being circulated in Pakistan for two decades: NIH

ISLAMABAD: National Institute of Health (NIH) on Saturday confirmed that human metapneumovirus (HMPV) that spread in China has already been present in Pakistan for 2 decades.

A notable increase in infections attributed to human metapneumovirus (HMPV) has been observed in China, prompting the authorities to enhance their screening, detection, and isolation measures in response to unidentified pathogens.

The virus is spreading among children age 14 and younger, but it’s unclear how much risk it might pose to those who get sick.

According to  the National Institute of Health, the HMP virus that spread in China has been present in Pakistan for 2 decades. The statement said that HMPV was first diagnosed in Pakistan in 2001.

A total 21 cases of this virus were reported in Islamabad in 2015. NIH officials said that the World Health Organization has not currently issued an advisory regarding HMPV.

He said that the National Command and Operation Center (NCOC) meeting on the situation of HMPV in China will be held on January 7.

He said that the cases of seasonal influenza, especially influenza A and B, are emerging in Pakistan.

On the other hand, medical experts also said that cases of HMPV are coming up often.

It should be noted that according to international media reports, this virus was first reported in 2000 and there has been no major change in the severity of the disease.

President, PM vow to give access to education to blind people

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the government was determined to provide better access of education and other facilities to the visually impaired people.

In a message on the World Braille Day on January 4, 2025, he said, “We are observing the Braille Day to highlight the importance of access of education for people deprived of eyesight.”

He said the objective of observing the World Braille Day was to create awareness about the rights of people deprived of eyesight. He said it was imperative to provide access to education to the special people for social and economic independence.

He noted that Braille was an important medium for visually impaired people to get education and knowledge.

He underlined the need for ensuring provision of important information to the blind people and said more urgent steps were needed to give visually impaired people access to books in Braille.

Pakistan had ratified the Marrakesh agreement for ensuring access of visually impaired people to education, he said adding high quality educational and informative material should be made available to the visually impaired people.

President Zardari urged that there was a need to pay attention to all sections of people for creating a society based on justice and equality.

PM Shehbaz Sharif said the government was committed in its resolve for creating enablers in society that empowered all individuals through accessible education, equipping schools with Braille books, enhancing teacher training, and establishing specialized centres for visually impaired students.

In a message on World Braille Day on January 4, 2024, he said, “Today, on World Braille Day, we join the global community in celebrating the transformative power of Braille, a remarkable system that has opened doors to knowledge, communication, and independence for millions of visually impaired individuals worldwide.”

He said, “Braille is not just a tool for reading and writing; it is a window to inclusivity and equal opportunities, empowering individuals to lead independent and dignified lives.

The spokesperson said that the terrorists wanted to target the vehicles of the Rangers. The CTD recovered  two hand grenades, explosives and cash were recovered from the terrorists and the terrorists were identified as Taj Muhammad and Parel.

It may be recalled that in November last year, a terrorist of a banned organization was arrested during a joint operation by CTD and police in Hyderabad.

Officials said that grenades, IED making equipment were recovered from the terrorist while ball bearings, battery, remote control, tape and other items were also recovered.

Officials said that the arrested terrorist has been identified as Ayaz Janja, the terrorist was planning terrorism in the area.
