Netflix India’s highly anticipated web series, Heeramandi, directed by renowned filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali, has been generating significant buzz since its first look was unveiled in February. The teaser, featuring an ensemble cast including Manisha Koirala, Aditi Rao Hydari, Richa Chadha, Sharmin Sehgal, Sanjeeda Shaikh, and Sonakshi Sinha, provided a tantalizing glimpse into the enchanting world of Heeramandi, leaving viewers eager for more. Recently, in an exclusive conversation, Richa Chadha shared her experience working with Sanjay Leela Bhansali in the series, shedding light on their collaboration.

Speaking about her time on Heeramandi, Richa Chadha revealed the unique challenges she faced while working with Sanjay Leela Bhansali. She emphasized that Bhansali possesses an uncanny ability to detect any trace of dishonesty, saying, “With Sanjay Leela Bhansali, you cannot lie. He can catch the slightest hint of falsehood in your eyes. He is a master at it. He knows when something is technically correct but lacks the heartfelt emotion he expects from you.” In such instances, the actor’s only recourse is to give their all, pouring every ounce of energy into their performance, ensuring a genuine and captivating portrayal. Richa expressed her admiration for Bhansali’s approach, admitting that while it can be intimidating, she appreciates being pushed beyond her comfort zone by the director.

Richa Chadha had previously collaborated with Sanjay Leela Bhansali in the film Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela. When asked about Bhansali’s on-set demeanor and his meticulousness when shooting scenes, Chadha acknowledged that she understood his perspective. Recognizing the significant financial stakes involved in Bhansali’s projects, she explained, “If I were in his shoes, I would probably do the same. There’s so much money riding on it.” According to Chadha, Bhansali’s commitment to excellence is unwavering, and he expects nothing short of actors’ utmost dedication. “He wants 75 to 100 percent from you,” she said. “He understands that every day may not be perfect, but he will take the 75 from one take, the 90 from another, and bring you up to 85. But you can’t approach the work with excuses like ‘I have a headache’ or ‘I can’t do it today.’ Such things don’t fly with him,” Richa added.
