ISLAMABAD: Justice Mansoor Ali Shah of the Supreme Court on Wednesday remarked that no constituency and assembly seat can be left without a representative or empty.
A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Umar Ata Bandial is hearing the petition of former prime minister Imran Khan regarding National Accountability Bureau (NAB) amendments in the Supreme Court of Pakistan.
Justice Mansoor Ali Shah inquired whether the people of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf are members of the National Assembly or not. Imran Khan’s lawyer Khawaja Haris said that all members of PTI have resigned from the Assembly.
He said by-elections were held in some seats and PTI was successful but the speaker is not accepting resignations as a political strategy.
Justice Mansoor Ali Shah said that no constituency can be left unrepresented and the Assembly empty.
Justice Mansoor Ali Shah in his remarks said that PTI people are also taking salaries and do not even go to the assembly.
Justice Ijaz-ul-Ahsan inquired why the Speaker does not accept all the resignations at once. The member who has a problem will object to the Speaker’s decision.
Justice Mansoor Ali Shah asked Khawaja Haris “If the Speaker is ordered to accept the resignation in four days, is PTI ready. To which he replied that if the court issues such an order, they are fully ready for it. PTI is only demanding elections. The current government has come as a result of corruption and breach of public trust.”
Lawyer Khawaja Haris said that the current assembly was formed by breaking public trust and is incomplete.
Justice Mansoor Ali Shah said that it is a biased view of PTI and that the assembly is incomplete.
Khawaja Haris said “I am demanding early elections.” Justice Ijaz ul Hassan said that this is all a political discussion that should be held at a political level and PTI should not be in the assembly.
Justice Mansoor Ali Shah said that the question of resignations is constitutional and not political. He said, “If the resignations are not accepted, why does PTI not approach the court.”
Khawaja Haris completed the arguments.
