Munich Re profits hit by poor investment performance

German reinsurance giant Munich Re reported a drop in its second-quarter profit on Tuesday as market volatility took a toll on investments, but the firm maintained its 2022 performance target.

The group’s preliminary net profit reached 768 million euros ($785 million) between April and June, down from 1.1 billion in the same period last year.

Munich Re, whose business consists mostly in covering the risks taken on by insurers, said the value of its holdings had slumped by 908 million euros, mainly due to losses on equity investments.

Its profit target of 3.3 billion euros for 2022 remains unchanged, though it warned of “considerable uncertainty owing to fragile macroeconomic developments, volatile capital markets and the unclear future of the pandemic”.

CEO Joachim Wenning said the group had posted a “solid quarterly result despite fierce headwinds from inflation, the cooling economy and the war in Ukraine”.

Munich Re lost 90 million euros as a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, while the bill for natural disasters came in at 253 million euros.

The drought in South America alone cost the group 130 million euros, it said.

However, premiums beat expectations to rise 8.3 percent year-on-year in the second quarter to almost 16 billion euros, boosted by growth in property-casualty reinsurance.

Honda City & competitors’ prices since 2021

Possibly the most common and often driven subcompact automobiles in Pakistan are those in the B-Segment.

Several new competitors have entered the market in the last two years, including the all-new Suzuki Swift, Toyota Yaris, Changan Alsvin, and the sixth-generation Honda City.

The four subcompact automobiles’ costs have nearly doubled recently, meanwhile, as a result of the disastrous local currency devaluation.

As can be seen above, Changan Alsvin’s price has increased the least while that of its rivals has increased dramatically.

Particularly Toyota Yaris and Honda City have suffered a sharp increase in price, which may put them at a disadvantage.

Value for money has always been a major selling point for Alsvin. Changan Alsvin still has that selling point despite the recent price increase, which will probably boost its sales going forward.

Tesla’s China-made vehicle sales fell 64% in July from a month earlier due to a plant update.

China’s vigorous promotion of electric cars has led to a dramatic decline in Tesla sales.

Tesla (TSLA) delivered 28,217 electric vehicles from its Shanghai facility in July, down from June’s 77,938. Sales dropped 54% from the previous year.

The US manufacturer has only begun recovering from a months-long lockout in Shanghai this year that affected manufacturing and suppliers. Tesla’s Chinese-made vehicle sales hit a record in June.

The CPCA didn’t explain Tesla’s July sales slump, but the US manufacturer acknowledged in its quarterly results call that its Shanghai factory had recently undergone “equipment upgrades”

In July, Tesla reportedly paused most production at its Shanghai plant to work on an upgrade that may enhance manufacturing by 22,000 cars per week, or 30%.

According to Tesla’s quarterly update last month, the Shanghai plant can produce more than 750,000 vehicles annually. After the renovation, the plant may produce more than a million EVs a year, reports say.

“With the Fremont and Shanghai facilities having their highest-ever production months, we’re focusing on a record-breaking second half of 2022,” Tesla stated.

China’s EV sales soar

BYD sold 80,991 pure electric vehicles in July, up 16 percent from June.

Retail sales of new energy vehicles — including electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids — surged 117% in July from a year ago, thanks to government incentives, a rebound in supply chains, and rising EV demand due to higher oil costs, the CPCA said Tuesday.

China has heavily subsidized the development of EVs in recent years.

China’s new energy car sales for 2022 could reach 6 million units, up from 5.5 million. This year’s number would be 70% higher.

Lord Aamer Sarfraz, Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s Trade Envoy to Singapore, has urged the UK government to reform the International Monetary Fund (IMF) with its allies.

He told, “The IMF attaches brutally severe and regressive terms to loans. Unattractive IMF terms push countries to other lenders, which is bad for us. We must ensure the IMF offers acceptable credit terms.”

The UK PM’s envoy’s declaration comes as numerous South Asian governments seek loans from the Washington-based lender.

Pakistan secured a staff-level deal with the IMF after removing oil subsidies and raising taxes, sparking inflation.

A recent Oxfam research indicated that 85% of IMF COVID-19 grants in the first year of the pandemic favored austerity. IMF study shows that austerity worsens inequality after pandemics.

He said IMF requirements for Kenya have hurt its poorest people the most, with record food and energy costs. Ghana, Sri Lanka, and Nigeria had to meet severe standards, he said.

He added that more restrictions could hurt the poorest in these countries.

Lord Sarfraz asked Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak to improve four areas.

First, he added, “IMF should resume conditionality-free financing. Second, loan conditionality should be discontinued.”

“Third, the IMF should support progressive tax measures instead of austerity measures. Businesses and public society should have a say in IMF credit programs.”

He said that the UK is IMF’s fifth-largest shareholder and should promote reforms with European and American friends after the new PM takes office.
