Sajid Javid thinks Boris Johnson’s problems start with him

Sajid Javid
  • Sajid Javid launched a scathing critique of Boris Johnson in the House of Commons.
  •  He quit as health secretary on Tuesday, precipitating other ministry resignations.
  •  Javid said he had been promised “at the highest level” that there were no parties during the Covid-19 lockdowns.

Sajid Javid has launched a devastating critique of Boris Johnson in the House of Commons as he explained why he quit as health secretary, warning that “the problem starts at the top” with the prime minister.

When he resigned on Tuesday evening, Javid precipitated other ministry resignations.

After Wednesday’s prime minister’s questions, the Tory member of parliament stated that he had been promised “at the highest level” that there were no parties in Downing Street during the Covid-19 lockdowns, only to find out afterward that this was false.

More recently, he stated, the administration lacked “truth and honesty” about the crisis involving deputy chief whip Chris Pincher, who has been accused of sexual misconduct.

“Eventually, we must realize that enough is enough. I believe that time has come,” Javid stated.

He stated that the “great democracy” of the United Kingdom was supported by the national interest and the need to retain integrity. “This issue is not abstract. In large democracies, we have witnessed what occurs when divisions are entrenched and not overcome. We cannot for it to occur here,” he stated.

He stated, “I will never risk losing my ethics.” “In my opinion, a team is only as good as its captain, and a captain is only as good as their team, therefore devotion must be reciprocal. Recent events have made it increasingly difficult to be a member of that squad.”

Somalia will talk to Al-Shabaab when time is right says Hassan Sheikh

Hassan Sheikh

  • The Al-Qaeda affiliate responsible for deadly attacks across East Africa
  • He said cutting off Al-financial Shabaab’s flows and countering their hateful message must be combined with a military approach.

Somalia’s new President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, putting an end to Al-violent Shabaab’s insurgency will require more than a military approach, and his government will negotiate with the extremist group only when the time is right.

He claimed that the Al-Qaeda affiliate responsible for deadly attacks across East Africa had developed a “coping mechanism” in response to military aggression and could not be defeated militarily.

Al-Shabaab has been seeking to overthrow the foreign-backed government in Mogadishu for over a decade and remains a potent threat despite efforts to defeat them militarily.

Mohamud, who was elected in May after previously serving as president from 2012 to 2017, said past approaches to Al-Shabaab had not worked, and his government was open to alternatives including talks when appropriate.

S.Africa honours 21 teenagers killed in tavern tragedy

teenagers killed in tavern
  • Memorial service for 21 people who died in mysterious circumstances at a township tavern last month.
  • Empty coffins were laid out to symbolise the loss of those who died, 11 days after their bodies were discovered.
  • The cause of the deaths remains a riddle, although officials have ruled out a stampede.

South Africa said an emotional farewell to 21 people, mostly teenagers, who killed in mysterious circumstances at a township tavern last month, in an incident that shook the country.

President Cyril Ramaphosa attended a memorial service at a stadium in Scenery Park, a township in East London’s coastal city, where empty coffins were laid out to symbolise the loss.

Eleven days after the bodies were discovered in the Enyobeni tavern, the cause of the deaths remains a riddle.

The police are yet to wrap up their investigation, although officials have ruled out a stampede, and autopsy results are still to be made public.

“Somebody, somewhere must answer” for the tragedy, Police Minister Bheki Cele declared at the memorial service

Scores of mourners filled a large marquee where 19 coffins were laid out, and hundreds more people gathered outside to follow the ceremony.

Some broke down in tears, while others chanted prayers as a police band played the national anthem.

Undertakers said the caskets were empty. One family expected to bury their child after the service and the others would be buried later this week. Two of the victims had already been laid to rest, according to local media.

The youngsters died in what survivors have described as a battle to escape the jam-packed venue, with one reporting a suffocating smell.

The grim discovery of their bodies was made on June 26.

The youngest was just 14 years and the oldest 20, according to birthdates listed on the memorial official programme distributed on Wednesday.

Cele had previously said the youngest was 13 and the oldest 17.

The fatalities bore no visible signs of injury and officials have ruled out a stampede as the cause of death.

– ‘Hope of our nation’ –

“As a nation we are hurt by what happened,” Oscar Mabuyane, the head of the Eastern Cape province where East London is located, said in an address.

“(The) young people we are here to bury were the hope of their families and by extension the hope of our nation.”

Drinking in South Africa is permitted for over-18s.

But in township taverns, which are often located close to family homes, safety regulations and drinking-age laws are not always enforced.

The tragedy has sparked calls for change.

“Alcohol… should never be a form of entertainment for our kids,” Lucky Ntimane, national convenor of the National Liquor Traders Association told the memorial service.

Nolitha Tsangani, a resident of Scenery Park who lives near the Enyobeni tavern, believes responsibility for the tragedy should be shared.

“We are all wrong… the parent is wrong, the child who is dead, I am sorry to say, is wrong,” she told AFP, blaming the tavern owner and the police.

Suspected jihadists raid Nigeria prison, free hundreds

Nigeria prison
  • Suspected jihadists smash their way into a prison near Nigeria’s capital, freeing hundreds.
  • One security official was killed when the gunmen breached the jail using high-grade explosives.
  • Residents reported loud explosions and gunfire late Tuesday near the Kuje medium-security prison.

Suspected jihadists smashed their way into a prison near the Capital city of Nigeria, freeing hundreds of inmates in an operation to free imprisoned comrades, the government said on Wednesday.

The brazen attack on the outskirts of Abuja came just hours after an ambush on a presidential security convoy in the northwest, highlighting Nigeria’s security crisis yet again.

Residents reported loud explosions and gunfire late Tuesday near the Kuje medium-security prison just outside the capital.

Security forces cordoned off streets in the area early Wednesday.

Outside the jail, the burned-out wreckage of a bus and cars marked the scene of the attack, and yellow police tape was stretched across a destroyed part of the prison perimeter.

“We understand they are Boko Haram, they came specifically for their co-conspirators,” senior interior ministry official Shuaibu Belgore told reporters on a visit to the prison.

“Right now we have retrieved about 300 out of about 600 who got out of the jail cells.”
